Pentium II 300 MMX!!
192 Megs of Ram PC100
15.5in lcd screen
dvd-rom

What i would really like to do is to find a way to take the lcd and mount it on the side of my case, therefore giving me a perfect lan box. Please let me know if you think this is a good idea or i am stupid for trying.

well, there are ways to use the monitor on a desktop, but IMO, it REALLY woudn't be worth the effort. That is still a very nice laptop. With a wireless card, that would serve as a very nice companion at college.
I'm going to bet that SS has a few c or p to give on this situation _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

YUP!
First off, It's not worth the effort to try and hack the LCD for use as a monitor. They require a special video card to make them work (and these are VERY expensive and NO use for games). It IS possible to make use of the LCD using the FEATURE connector on older PCI cards, BUT you will be limited to 16colours, thats SIXTEEN colours, not 16K. also you will have to find the data sheets for both the LCD and PCI card to find the correct pinouts. LCD displays DO NOT run directly from a DVI port, they still require a LARGE ammount of controller chips to make them work.
If you don't mind the 16 colour display, then you might find a use for it as a second monitor, which might have it's uses during a LAN session.
one *possible* use, could be to hack the WHOLE laptop apart from the case and install the motherboard on the back of the LCD, then use a program like VNC or PC Anywhere to display the desktop on the LCD, but this WILL be slow, laggy and possibly restricted colours as well.
If the laptop has TV IN, then you could hook that up to the TV OUT on your video card on the games amchine. This would work as well as it does on a TV.
Other than those options, you are better off keeping the laptop.
OR you could give it to ME!

Ah, i just made a cool grand on that bet.
Actually, that pcanywhere thing isn't a bad idea. You MIGHT be able to build the laptop into your case and use pcAnywhere to use the monitor. You've already got the hub built in . . . can you set it so pcAnywhere starts up on bootup? _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

| I didn't read up on the connectivity of a laptop lcd, thanks for the input though. Sounds more like a really large project that i really don't want to put the time in. Not really worth it in the outcome. Well...any ideas on what i can do with this laptop? Just for fun... |

Make a "One for ALL " remote control for everything in the house.....
If that has an IR port and a WIFI card, then you could aset up a WIFI network, and remote control any computers you have and also use the IR port to control ANY IR device (TV, VRC, DVD etc).
Or you could spray paint the case and hook it up to a payphone an pretend to be an extra from the film "Hackers"

| If i was a extra in the movie hackers, my laptop would steal the show, the biggest thing in that movie was some made up chip, that was "triple the speed of the Pentium" oooooooh |

Nothing "made up" about it, the "P6" processor was a REAL CPU, at the time of the movie was being filmed the INTEL P6 had not yet been released, but shortly after Intel changed it's name to the PENTIUM PRO.
"Bet it looks crispy in the dark...."
Actually, unless you know a lot about computer history and hang around real hackers, some of that stuff in the movie won't make sense. A "Gibson" super computer is a little recognition of William Gibson, author of many books such as 'Neuromancer' (published 1984), Gibson did not even own a computer, but he envisioned a global information network (the 'Matrix') with a virtual reality simulation interface ('cyberspace', a term he used before in the 'Burning Chrome' short story). Recognise a few words there?
There is some nice references in the movie to certain individuals, Capt Crunch, Emanual Goldstein, to name a few.
