| That looks pretty nice. Looks like a couple of USBs too. Did you take any pics while you were building it? |

actually those usb's where there to begin with, i took a old 5.25 front usb attachment, busted out the 3.5 holder inside, worked the clips on the inside to hold her in place.
Now i'll i need to do is rewire so i can get the psu to run it instead of the ac adapter....looks like a trip to the local radio shack.... |

That thing is pretty freaking awesome. I bet those drives are a breeze to take out and swap around.
The built in hub is ingenious. If you could hard wire one of the NICs into that you would be golden. Then you just take it to LAN's and act as the server too.
Is that only a 10Mbps hub? I got two of those. Its funny to transfer a file over one of those while the roomate plays socom. Hehehe = very laggy =P
Well done once again. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Yeah, that looks damn good.
I did something similar, I had an old busted (smashed case) 8 port which I striped apart and de-soldered the connectors and added cat5 extensions, then mounted the connectors directly to a blank drive plate. It was part of the server until I switched over to a 100Mps network. Think I still got it in a box somwhere. did'nt look as good as that setup though.
That looks as if it's actually supposed to be there. Nice!

^Vaguely. I knew i saw the idea somewhere. Is it still in this section or the cases and modding section? _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Yeah, but i'm looking for OMD's mod. I'm too lazy to go dig around. We need a quick answer or link
Hmm, time to grab an old hub and smash it . . . then we'll see what can and can't be hardwired. Thanks for the idea guys! _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

| Hey thanks for the comments. I am now going to run a new power to the hub in the front where the usb is. I'll post some pics once its done. |

How are you getting power to the hub? I'm working on this mod and i think i may go off the 12v rail but i'll obviously have to dumb down the voltage a bit to 7.5v into the hub.
Dumb question but i need to make sure my physics is right. A 4.5ohm resistor ought to do the trick right? Since there aren't any 4.5's, i'll have to go for a 4.7 though? Anyone else wanna do the math on this?
On a side note, the cpu inside the hub is an AMD
Check it out for yourself if you don't believe me, Hoedizzy. Maybe you could take a pic with your camera as someone sold me one that isn't too great . but it was cheap _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

JW...Resistors do NOT change a voltage. They only can limit the current. There indeed is a Voltage drop but it depends on the load.
How you would best power this depends on the exact switch you are using...most that use these "power packs" have their regulation circuitry inside the hub...but some may use a regulated power pack.
The easiest way of course is extend the connector to the back panel (use an old slot blank) and plug the power pack to that. An extender cable so to speak, inside the puter. _________________ .

I am going to run a power out the back, there is now way i would hook up to the psu. I've thought of every combo possible. So once i get some parts and a custom connector, i'll post it.
JW...I metiond the camera to you, you didn't have to buy it!!!!!! |

It'd be nice if we could get it hooked up to the psu, but then again it might cause alot of noise
Yeah, the camera was cheap. Thats why i got it.
I must be sorely misled on the voltage and resistors thing. Back to the books i guess. Something just isn't clicking quite right. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

If you want to drop a voltage by a few volts, the simple way is to use a series of silicon diodes, 1Nxxx series will provide about 1 volt drop per diode. just string a few of these in series and you will drop the voltage down by the required ammount. Use a multimeter to get the voltage just a little under the needed voltage ( voltage drop is affected by temperature and current draw). test it out witha dummy load, something that pulls about an amp will do (light bulb or something similar) to make sure it's at the right voltage when under load.
The diodes are VERY cheap, only a few cents, pennies, local currency etc.
It's cheap, but it works.

Excellent. Excellent. I don't want to take away from this thread too much, but i thought i remembered that the only way to change current was to split it up into multiple pathways. The way to change voltage was through resistors . . . should we make a new thread on this? _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

No disrespecing and all....but resistors MOST DEFINITELY do limit voltage.

Nope they only resist the flow of current...hence the name resistor. Indeed they will effect the voltage (e-drop) IF there is current in them. Even a 10meg resistor for example will show the same voltage on either side if there is no current flowing. And Yes...you can have voltage without current.
If you knew for sure that the regulation is in the hub...you can shift the voltage easily with a Zener diode and a resistor.
To the problem at hand....Riddle me this....Why, he asked, would you want to consume current inside your case, when you can (with an extension cable) put it outside. (in the wallplug) Don't we have enough heat inside the case to get rid of? _________________ .

Vi=IRi
now the I doesn't change, the V starts with 12, the R is the resistance of the hub circuitry.
Vf=IRf, the V is now 7.5v, since I remains the same, R must be changed. So all you have to do is calculate for Rf
I=vi/ri
I=vf/rf
vivf=rirf
12*7.5/ri=rf
rf-ri=resistor value
if you know the amperage it can make it even easier...
it's been a long while since i did it, so I may have maken a mistake... but i'm fairly certain that that would be it. _________________ If time is of the essence,

Thats how i did it. I was hoping i was close . BTW, it draws 1amp of current (I)
Thanks =)
Basically, since current is the same it can drop out of the equation.
Vi/Ri = Vf/Rf
Maybe i'll just get a 10ohm pot and tune it to 7.5v _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |
