I've been kicking around the idea that I could install the OS and maybe some of the productivity apps (OpenOffice, PictureGear, and the like) on my 14 gig drive... and then leave the other drive completely free for data and games.

My questions...

Would I actually see a performance gain out of this? I'm doing it to be organized. My friends swears up, down, left and sideways, that this will make my computer go FASTER.

The one big issue is that Windows likes to keep the things on the dekstop in an obscure little folder buried deep in it's workings.... so I'll probably have to become well versed in the art of shortcutting. Any other merits/flaws?

the only real gains you might have are that keeping this data on other drives allows you to reload the OS without have to touch the second drive ( until after you reload....and then it's as simple as placing short cuts to the application's .exe file to launch it)
also, placing the system's virtual memory on a different physical drive from the one the OS is loaded on has long been a common practice for a little boost in caching. (this has also been discussed here in the forums)

it's possibly true.....but you'll need to be able to count in milliseconds in order to notice it.

see above.
btw, that "obscure" little folder is located under your profile when using XP...it's no biggie.

Also placing your swap file on another drive other than your OS can improve performance greatly.

So, put your swap file on the data drive.

good for your my docs as well. create a my docs folder on the second hdd. point your my docs to that location. that way, if the OS drive fails, you haven't lost all of your important data. or, if you absolutely must format the drive and reinstall, you don't have to worry about having to back everything up. and if you use outlook, you can place your pst file onto the data HDD, so that you won't lose any of your e-mails/contacts/calendar.
