I was normally cleaning my monitor with a damp cloth of water and i was trying to get a dried up piece of tomato sauce of my monitor (Dont ask me why, but people got to stop eating around my computer) , and i used my nail, and as i dry off my monitor, i see these 2 huge scratches. Its like the coating that is scratched. I think the coating is anti reflective , because its a lil tinted, and under the scratches is a brighter image of what im looking at. I dont know if u can really see the scratches in this pic, but this is wut it looks like

When the coating has been scratched it can't be repaired.
The factory sprays this coating on during manufacture so when it gets
scratched you are out of luck.

Congrats, you just turned your class "A" monitor into a class "B" factory second.

It's possible to buy the liquid coating, but you will prolly just make a REAL mess of the picture tube.

One question, have you tried using a solvent such as meths or some form of alcohol to rub the scratch marks? Y ou might be lucky and it is only a suface stain. The coating is usually quite hard wearing, though not to the extent of being scratch resistant.

I would be very hesitant to use a solvent. It might cloud up the monitor. You may be SOL unless there is a warranty that covers that.

damn.....you could scratch it all off and adjust your brightness?

Even if you could buy the coating, it would be easier and prolly cheaper just to get a new monitor....what type of monitor is it, and how long have you had it?

Good idea, it prolly wouldnt work 100%, but it should certainly help a bit...and they are pretty cheap.

You know the funny thing is, I was thinking about that myself.

Some car waxes have a polymer based chemical in them, this is used to give that liquid looking shine. A number of deep coats in this and polished up could just help blend the screen in with the scratches. I would try Atoglym super resin polish (if you can get that where you are), it's used by ALL the big names in the car industry.

The trick will be to get just enough in the area to blend it in. It won't cure the problem, but it should help out at least.

Good luck.

Personally, its not too bad and I would leave it alone. Take it from experience - experimenting often makes it worse. I would be a little hesitant to use car wax unless you try a very small amount on a tiny portion of one scratch.

also consider the following....car waxes and their polymer blah blah blah that was mentioned above work on gloss finishes....they blend the overall finish through polishing to a shine......so you would have a monitor with unending amounts of glare in either one spot or across the whole thing.....I am with JW....either forget it or try the glare filter

Seconded.

I think Sally came up with a good idea without knowing. He had mentioned the glare filter and then mention the car wax leaving glar. Maybe combining the car wax and glare filter theories together would do you some good.

Toothpaste can be put on pimples before bed to dry them out over night. Its actually decently effective. One or two nights and that bad boy that would normally ruin your week is out of you hair.

Warts.... get a scalpel and be careful.

Toothpaste would be good if it was a scratch in pexi or lexan. In this case I dont know if it would do any good. Well other than leave your monitor minty fresh.

OK, I put my money where my mouth is and tried some resin based car polish on one half of my monitor and cleaned the other side with some glass cleaner. both sides had a few fairly minor defects in the anti-glare coating.

The side cleaned with the car polish, was fine, no streaks or marks. removed defects. tested with halogen desk light from the side to produce glare, possibly more reflective, but certainly no extra glare. suface texture of the coating can still be seen.

Side cleaned with glass cleaner (window cleaner), no streaks, though screen is still a little greasy / dirty in places. one defect cleaned (may have been grease) one remains screen anti glare seems normal, no real difference in reflected angle or extra glare.

Car polish did help hide the remaining damage in the anti glare coat. Cleaned entire screen with car polish and all seems fine (removed a lot of dirt and grease, remained on white polishing cloth). I buffed the polish up to remove all trace of white poweder / residue. Screen is now less reflective than it was when dirty.

The car polish did'nt have any bad effects on my CRT coating, overall better than it was. Antiglare seems fine, even has the normal strange blueish colour when looking at reflected light.

I used Autoglym "super resin polish" If it's good enough for Aston Martin, Lagonda, Jaguar and McLaren, then it's good enough for my Mini Cooper and CRT.

I would'nt use a wax type polish, I would imagine this would reduce the effectiveness of the antiglare and possibly make the screen a little fuzzy (like when it's dirty and greasy). I did'nt have any on hand to try it.

I'm fairly sure that glass scratch repair liquid is made with a type of polycarbonate. Would cover the whole screen OK, but you would loose the anti glare coating as th polycarbonate resin would fill the minor imperfections in the coating that scatter the light.
It would sort out the scratches though.

Hi Silicon Skum, I'm sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead, but I seem to have the same problem.

I have a Sony 24" Widescreen CRT. I was wiping the screen with a dry paper towel (damn people and their greasy fingers), a sharp corner of my nail seemed to hit the coating, and now I have a scratch.

Did the resin car polish have any ill effects after you did the little experiment?
