sup all, this is my first post, and if you can't tell by the title... I'm a hardcore gamer who's about to build a top of the line machine. I had my heart set on the samsung 191t the moment I saw it in bestbuy (it was connected to an alienware comp and I tried some of their demos, quality was amazing, and I thought the refresh rate was ok)
but a few days later I talked to a friend of mine who says that LCDs aren't good for gaming, I searched and found your site which indeed confirms my worst fears... well damn.
My question is, how bad is it? what is the refresh rate? will I still be able to get it and have a good time gaming? How noticable is the difference? and is there a difference between DVI and analog? I really don't want to go back to a CRT.
or maybe you can offer an alternative? |

With the new generation of 191T that is on the market, gaming might have improved. If you played a game and you found that there was no ghosting, then things might have drastically improved. One of the ONLY down points was the gaming and this might have been noticed by samsung and they probably cured it.
Samsung is good like that, they actually listen to the consumer population, and that is why I love their products. _________________ Owner & Administrator

LCDs in general aren't made for gaming, its compact and space saving, but becase of the different technology, CRTs are able to give faster refresh rates than LCDs. It's just the same with laptops, generally speaking, playing games wiht a LCD monitor is the same as playing games on a laptop. LCDs are made for office use, and graphics designers use, and of course, the hot topic, it gives off less radiation and is easier on the eyes, but it's a fragile technology..Just becareful and watch out for pixels that turn bad..it might be heavier and takes up more space, but for games, i suggested buying a CRT instead of an LCD, but the choice is up to you. _________________ still the same old computer tweaker..

| fast replies, thnx... I think I'll go back to bestbuy and try those demos again and see if there is ghosting or if it's a significant problem (I wasn't paying detailed attention last time I went there) thnx for the help although I don't think I'll be going back to CRT, reason being I'm buying it for college, I've seen my dorm room, and I don't think a 20+ CRT will fit. |

When it first came out, that was the difference between the product, but the prices were shuffled due to model years and the price dropped afterwards. _________________ Owner & Administrator

| LCDs can be ok for gaming. You often get what you pay for. If you want to game on an LCD, than one with an incredibly fast response is what you need. Even an expensive LCD doesn't ensure better gaming performance than an economical CRT. What LCDs can offer is veratility: screen rotation, wall mounting, and some portabilty. These are some of the reasons I ditched my 19in CRT for a 17in LCD. I don't think I can go back to looking at the other unless I have to. I would like to note that at least on my systems that the graphics adapter seems to be more important than with CRTs. ATi simply looks better on the desktop than nVidia. Even a lowly Radeon LE with VGA looks better next to an Asus GeForce4 with the DVI. |

yea lcds have drop'd a ton in price recently and are much better for gaming than they used to be. if u shop @ best buy ditch the samsung and check out the new 17" sony lcds. Not as large, but quality wise (contrast ratio) and latency wise (ms) it beats the samsung by both. The new sonys have a latency of i believe 17ms (traditional crts are anywhere from 6-10) and the contrast ratio is 500or550:1. Great lcd for gaming, but make sure u check out the latency of the lcds. They range from 16-40. Imagine adding 40 onto your ping when u play online.....ewwwwwwww _________________ www.network-underground.net/

The one main difference is the extreme difference in price between the Sonys and the Samsungs.
Mind you, for everyday use, Samsung is the best out there. But, if you need an LCD for gaming, you will have to dish out the major bucks or perhaps wait for this year's models.
Remember to not always trust the contrast stats advertised. Some companies are stating something that their products won't perform at. Samsung on the other hand were brighter than they stated. _________________ Owner & Administrator

Ummmm, latency of a monitor or LCD screen does not at latency to your online ping. _________________ TestOC PC

Ok I'm in the same boat as the guy who started this thread. I need a good 17" or 19" LCD with no screen flicker, motion blur NOTICEABLE. I know all LCD's have them, but you guys know what I mean
So, I've heard Samsung's 191N and 191T and the NEC MultiSync LCD 1530mv and the Sony LCD's . Any other opinions for best gaming LCD monitors for not a blow-out your face price? |
