Okay, my mom wants a computer for under 500 smackaroos. Just the rig itself no perhiperals i.e. monitor, speakers, keyboard etc.

Im too lazy myself to so this now with HW and stuff.

Shes not an Über 1337 gamer like me or a tweaker so something that'll just be good for web browsing (we are gonna set up a wireless network soon so...yea)

Thanks all

AMD XP 2400
MSI Mobo with everything on board (anyone know a specific model?)
256Mb RAM
60Gig HD

That should be nice and cheap, stable and should be able to last for a few years.

What exactly will she be running on the system? if it's just web and text than that should me more than enough.

MSI K7N2 Delta (or whatever version with all the bells and whilstles you need)
Retail AMD processor (one with heatsink, not an OEM ~2400+ wouldn't be too bad)
2*256mb of pc3200
ATI 9200 or 9600 (possibly SE) video card.
HDD of your choice.
Case and fans? CD drives?

That would be a pretty solid system in this case IMO

Get her a wicked little socket 478 Celeron, put it on a Asus or Abit 865 chipset mobo. Rock solid and quick. Can even OC. em Little more$ now, but may be cheaper in the long run. 2¢

The Celery is indeed a good idea. I think you can get a 9600se for about $50 and a mx440 or r7500 for about $40. I would go with the later card, it'll support higher resolutions and have better image quality. My thoughts.

AMD Duron 1.3Ghz
ECS K7S5A Pro Motherboard
512Megs of Ram
40gig Drive

1.3 Duron? Better hurry....but inexpensive. Or a Sempron.

Make note though Polar...pretty much everybody here said.....mobo w/processor.
Mobo (chipset) are as important as the processor. Lot's of ppl don't put enough consideration in the mobo....most important.

Agreed, but quality might be a better thing to consider here. How is ECS's quality and how are the SiS chipsets? That is a SiS, right?

here is my idea of the rig:

MSI K7N2 Delta (Built in 6 channel audio)
Sempron 2400+
GF4ti4200 (very cheap now) 5200FX or GF4 mx.
Maxtor Diamond Plus 40GB IDE 7200rpm
2*256 MB Corsair Value select RAM
DVD reader
CD RW
Floppy drive (mums always use them)

That would cost about £350 after adding a PSU And case etc.

Maybe, instead of a floppy, you can get a USB thumb drive. I got my mum one of those a few months ago and she bought another. She hasn't used a floppy since.

I would stear away from a gf4 TI, you can get better image quality for the same price with a fx5200 or a 9200/9600 series card. Otherwise, those are some good suggestions.

Lots of choices here, P^2. It may be up to you know.
