switching fans maybe?

i've been toying with the idea of getting rid of the 92mm fan on my sp-94 and going w/ an 80mm centrifugal blower (unless they make a 92mm one). i've seen my temps hit up to 57º, which im not liking

anyone think it would make much of a difference? i've already moved the fan off center to try and offset the deadspot, so im not sure if there's any more improvements i can make with that. i was thinking of using a duct mod, only like an inch or so, but i heard that would decrease the air pressure somehow (not sure how

) so thats outta the question. anyways... would i see any improvements or otherwise by switching? any input would be great

How are your case temps and what kind of case cooling do you have?

When you put the heatsink on, did you clean the cpu and heatsink and use a small amount of thermal paste?

case temps are between 32-36º, 34 right now. and the heat sink and cpu were both cleaned w/ 90% rubbing alcohol. if anything, i might be using too little arctic silver (i think?) also... i at least tried screwing the heatsink as tight as i could. that would be correct, right? i know of at least one heat sink that you'll break the cpu if you screw it on all the way.

I just noticed another thing. You are running an abit motherboard. The p4 abits tend to read much higher than they should. Touch the heatsink itself. If it feels warm it is ok. If it feels too hot to the touch (almost like it will burn you) then it is around 55C or possibly more. Its probably just a software issue or an issue with the windbond chip. I know that either racing ray or 87stang had an abit p4 motherboard that reported load temps of 64 celsius when it was actually closer to 45C.

Your cooling seems more than efficient.

I would try to get another tepm reading from an external sensor before going too far, I have that same Heatsink, with a sunon 92mm, with a flat sensor taped to the underside my temps never get above 42*C, and idle around 30*C (both temps are about 2*C below what i get with MBM5).

it's also way esier to have too much thermal grease than to have to little, as long as there is a thin layer covering the entire CPU heatspreader you dont have too little

Jay hit the nail on the head. Abit P4 motherboards do tend to read high. So if you are noticing it running at 57C under load then you are right about my 3.0C P4 on a Abit IC-7 MAX3 runs when I am running D2OL on it 24/7. So I would will say that you are fine on the cpu side of things but I would look into more case cooling.

ok well i guess i'll try a compu-nurse or something first off.... as far as case cooling goes... maybe i could tinker around w/ the arrangement of the fans, but as of now there's 4 80mm intakes in the front, an 80mm intake in the side, 2 80mm exhausts on the back, the little 40mm exhaust from the OTES part, and the 140mm exhaust from the power supply, plus the punch-out grille along the pci slots. i was gonna put in a blow hole, but i dont have the tools around here to do it with

Touch your heatsink and tell us how warm/cool it feels. be very careful with this though. I'm pretty sure you're mobo is just reporting the wrong temps but it doesn't hurt to double check.

sounds like everything is fine there with the case cooling. I checked on my MAX3 and the temps you are seeing are normal. So no worries with yours.

Oh, if your still planning to buy a good quality fan then get the vantec tornado, its louds but definately does the job. CAUTION: do not touch fan blades while on its really strong, and may tear / rip off your finger(s).

Also... its seems you have more intakes than you do exhausts. Try switching it the other way around. If you have to have more of one than the other for any reason, it should be more exhaust.
