142dB out of an 8" woofer? Damn, how much power were you putting into that thing and was it in your mini?

Lets just say, it was not a standard setup And yeah, it was in the Mini (damn loud in there).

I did a little alteration to the amp, swaped the FETs over for some higher rated ones and shoved 16V into it (Damn near blew it up!). Did'nt have a 16V supply so I had to make one, had to use a large capacitor bank, six 4 Farad caps in paralell with an improvised regulator charging circuit. The caps had a weird story, I borrowed them from a guy I knew, seems they were part of some LASER system....... did'nt ask too much about them after that, did'nt want to know really. Probably safer that way.
To stop the risk of the coil vapourising I froze the magnet wih a Peltier + water jacket (got to about- 38deg C) took a while to reach that temp.
I warmed it up slowly and then allowed the amp to surge up to max output.

SPL was taken from within the boot with the lid closed - test length <2 sec.

The sub had a max SPL of 136Db @ 100Hz as tested by the manufacturer using all standard parts inc the built in amp (for a brief second with the wind behind it). Not bad at all for a budget low end system. 142Db @ 100Hz just shows what was left in there.
For the test I converted the box to a sealed unit, I removed the "passive resonator" that wobbller thingey, and screwed a solid sheet of MDF board in it's place.

The internal amp was nearly destroyed by the test (got a bit hot) so I had to do a little bit of repair but it still works sweetly. the sub *just* made it out alive, I don't think it will ever manage that output again.

What can you do for an aftermarket deck (radio/cd player)

Does the 02 Mitsu eclipse give you the option to add aftermarket stereo?

I would start there and look for a good cd player with preamp outputs from pioneer or kenwood.

After that, I would look for a good amplifier from MTX, Memphis, Rockford, JBL, JL, Alpine, or any other good manufacturer.
Same with the sub woofers. Just try to Match the RMS wattage of the woofers with the RMS wattage of the amp. It is ok to overpower the woofers but do not underpower them. It can cause lots of distortion and damage.
It would also be a good idea to look into component speakers for the rear deck and the doors or dash. Wherever the other speakers are.

For you car ( i had a 2002 spyder so it should sound good in yours too ) i had 3 12in Rockford subs 2 rockford amps and 8 rockford speakers in my car and had it powered by a Kenwood cd/mp3 player. Kenwood it my fav. deck and i would recommend it to you :) I like it because it gave me a "THUMP" but also sounded nice and crisp without distortion. There products are also user friendly and not complicated. Nuthing like listening to AC/DC after work and having it feel like your in the front roe next to the speakers at their concert.

Yeah, Sony isn't too bad. What mattered to me was the cost of everything after my Best Buy discount....WOW it was great...Here is the breakdown

Cost after discount:
Head:$78
6 1/2's: (all four) $84
Box: $52
12's: $130 for two
Amp: $111

I ended up saving somewhere around $700!!! I was happy.

If you don't have connections, its hard.

If you eBay, it might be pretty easy to beat.
