Still working on an effecient test for the L2 setting, getting mixed results at the moment. I *will* find a way....
So far it *looks* like the L2 setting will help. More so if the CPU has a larger cache than normal for that group.

I hadn't forgotten this issue either, just been busy....but Mars and Earth are safe now.
But, I agree SS even if it is small amount of help, or no help, I've not seen any case where it hurt. So I'd set it.
Maybe I'll get some time this weekend to look at it some more. _________________ .

<--------also still looking into this.......I did some timings on some audio editing programs such as Goldwave, and when resampling the exact same Audio file from 8000hz to 44100hz, WITH the l2 setting assigned, i noticed (using a timer of course, although a crude one, only measuring to 1/10th of a sec) an almost 3/4 of a second improvment over NOT having the is setting assigned.......
So far....that one real life (to ME) example of its benefits.......hope this helps... _________________

There is another thread here about this....And Silicon Scum and I have both worked on it a bit...it's very hard to nail down with much science, though.
That link is for NT and there is another for 2000 but we haven't seen one for XP.
MS's stand is not to mess with it....They will also have you leave the indexing service functioning, but that one helps the HD access times.
Some ppl say it really helps...some see no diference...most don't even know it exists. _________________ .

Yeah, I did notice some difference on my AMD 3200+ (512 cache). I left it up as I never saw any drop in performance, and I seemed to shave a few mins of my number cruncers output times. still enabled.

Nope, its not over there >
Which Jack bottle? Could be the Hawkeye bottle or bud light/keystone cans too. *ponders cleaning room but continues to toss things around to look for the disk*
I've got a backup but it just won't boot from the cd. I guess i'll have to find those floppy drives and attempt to boot to the cd via those. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Great site. I'll see how much it improves 3dmark01se when i get done.
I finally found my xp disc! With prime95 and 3dmark01se, i noticed NO change with this L2 tweak. I'll have to try some more cpu intensive tasks like pi calculator. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

I noticed a huge difference when I did it. I think this is one of those things that benchmarking can rea without changing that cache. But in real world use, it does make a difference. _________________ AMD Athlon XP 3200+, ATI Radeon 9800pro, Antec True Power 430W, Abit NF7-S 2.0 motherboard, Soundblaster Audigy 2, Windows XP |
