|
|
Hey! I'm not sure which part of this forum I should post this message in, but this seems to be the best place.
I just finished building a computer for a friend that uses a nVidia GeForce FX 5200 video card made by Gainward. After my friend brought it home yesterday, he contacted me earlier today and told me that when he tried to run a game on the computer, he kept getting the error message that states "I need version 8.1 directx/higher or my video drivers are not correct." Even after updating his drivers, the problem would not go away. He then did a "dxdiag" on his computer, and it stated that his computer video driver does not have 3D capability. How can I help him fix this problem?
Thanks,
-=Victor |

He was definitely trying to run a few games, such as Hitman 2 and Warcraft 3 (both legit versions). Trust me that he does not know enough about computers to try to benchmark anything.
Thanks for helping,

what card specific drivers did you get....NVIdia? Gainward?
what model (memory differences)...there are three bios listing for the 64MB version and another for the 128.
if the simple solutions do not help....provide some details of the system. |

Unfortunately, he doesn't have an Internet connection right now, and won't have one until this Sunday. I could help him download it, but I don't wanna waste over two hours downloading a 30meg+ program on my 56k =P I'll tell him to download the newest version of DirectX this Sunday, and I'll check back here and post a response.
If anyone thinks of another solution, please let me know.
Thanks a lot for all the help.

My question is, if he could afford everthing that is there, why'd he buy such a cheap card, that 5200 is the MX series of the FX cards. For like 50 more dollars CDN he could have had a Ti 4200 in there, which is a much more powerful card than the 5200 hundred. _________________ If I was to be any letter in the alphabet, I would be 12 |

hehe...never trust a video card without a fan these days.
one of those games, may very well have a copy of DirectX on it...have you looked over the CDs?
I also have hitman2 here and it does have ver8.1 on it....go for a re-install from the CD and see if it helps.
Otherwise you'll need the web for 9.0.
So we can also presume he's using XP?
Gainward might just be a little slow in updating their supperted drivers list, but the last one they show at their site is:
Windows 2000 / XP Multi Language 44.03 2003/06/11 19071KB |

Gah, he definitely needs to get the latest DirectX and the latest game patches for everything to run smoothly.
Once the newest DirectX is installed, everything should be kewl.
Also, it's not always the best practise to install the videocard drivers BEFORE DirectX. Always do it after. _________________ Owner & Administrator

I was able to get the 5200 video card for $70 on sale, which was a lot cheaper than any other TI4200 video card I could find at the time (I think I the cheapest TI4200 I saw last time was over $160, and that was after a mail-in rebate, too).
Thanks for asking though,

Okay, I'm hoping DirextX 9 should do it for him this Sunday.
Thanks,
