That's not a regular 5700, it's a 5700SE which is an under powered version of a 5700. While thee 5600XT is an overpowered version of a 5600. _________________ Love Is Not Enough... |

If it is a regular 5700, then get that but if it is a 5700se do not get it.
I think I understand that the 5700 is £68 now. That should do rather well for you. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

| the 5600XT is not that good of a card at all in fact its one of the worst FX cards tehre is, its hardly any better than a 5200, the XT for Nvidia = slower/crappier card such as the SE for ATI i would get the 9600np or pro or if you can get a 9600xt or 9800pro, or consider getting a 5900 or a 5700U. |

I am assuming you have tried both of these cards on many different occasions? Please don't badmouth them if you haven't.
Josh is doing quite alright with his 5600xt and it is a rather big step from the 5200.
I do agree that a 9600 pro is worth considering as well as a 5700U.
When presented with the choices you made, I would take the 5700.
Check out the 9600 pro or maybe even the non-pro and see if they spark any interest. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

I would go with a 5700U card if you are looking to spend that kind of money. FTR, dont give cards that you havent tried a bad comment, it depends on user needs, and the 5600XT would meet alot of peoples needs. _________________ »4 RS«»1Ж «»1 DENE«»1 FREAKIN LAME OH«»1 MONEY MONEY«

Hey guys,
I picked up a copy of Doom 3 yesterday. Now, I'm experiencing some lag, sluggishness, I dunno. I'm just not happy aoub thte graphical performance situation. My comp stats are as follows:
P4 3.0 GHz (NOT overclocked !!!)
1 gig DDR PC 3200
Microstar Indus. NVidia GeForce 5200FX (is this my problem its a 128 meg card)
WD 80 Gig @ 7200
Microstar Indus. 865PE Neo 2 Mobo (Woot !!)
Additionally, I also installed Direct X 9.0 C (the newest Direct X Drivers)
I thought NVidia had the best performance with their graffix cardz when it comes to Doom 3 ??
Am i an ass clown, or do i need to shell out more $$$ for a graffix card ?? Maybe 9800XT ??
I usually try to run the game @ 1024*768 in medium detail. My graffix card has the most recent drivers. What to do ??

Well, the problem is that you are trying to get too much out of your fx5200. That is far from a real gamers card. You will most likely have to move to low detail or low resolution with medium detail to run smoothly.
There is also the option to overclock to see if that smooths things out. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Yeah what they said....you could have a FX-53 CPU, 2GB dual channel DDR2 a Raptor HDD, but if you have a Graphics card such as a Geforce 4 mx, 5200 fx 9200 etc, you still wont be able to play games such as doom 3 on anything more than medium detail at decent FPS. Sorry.
Get yourself a 9800 pro, if you got a lot of cash, pick up a 6800 GT....my 2p. _________________ »4 RS«»1Ж «»1 DENE«»1 FREAKIN LAME OH«»1 MONEY MONEY«

I wouldn't jump out to get a new graphics card just yet. Play with the game resolution and details. If that doesn't help, look to overclock if you are comfortable with that. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

I have a 5600Ultra and i can play doom at 1024x768 at high detail and get absoulty no lag of any kind. I have been at a lan and a x800 maxed out didn't look all that much better than mine . So try a lower setting and enjoy and if you just want more fps then the human eye won't regester after 60 anyway.
imho |

Ive lowered the detail some....ran some of the demo's from the Doom 3 Console Menu, and ive come to terms (Mr. Negotiator/Roger Smith) I'll most likely get an ATI 9600 256 meg card. It seems that these cards have the necessary cooling and umph to get the job done. I have dynamic overclocking enabled on my GeForce 5200FX and it DID help, but man that chipset gets hottt !!!
Matter of fact, right now im @ 107F for my CPU and 113F for my system temp....AFTER installing the neu fan....Jeez....i dont want to add a cooling system, just some good ol fashioned air flow !! _________________ P4 3.0C (Yup thatz the Northwood)

Well....ive upped my AGP Aperature size to 256 megz...although my memory card is only 128 megz...and I have boosted the rating of my Dynamic Overclocking up to Level 3 or 7. I guess I will need to get some water cooling....I Dont have the CPU overclocked though....and my Apt. doesnt come with an AC....so it MAYBE necessary. But...any -who....I'm now happy with the current state of my Doom 3 performance......woot !!! 40-26 fps in medium detail, resolution 800x600. I know itz not as good as yourz.....but just u wait until I shell out fer the 9600XT !!!
BTW....I moved my house fan closer to my comp....and my system temp dropped to 100F and my processor temp dropped to 110F !!!
Anyways....thankz fer your help...... <(^.^)> _________________ P4 3.0C (Yup thatz the Northwood)

I would shy away from the 9600xt and get a 9800pro. same price range but the 9800pro has alot better performance.
I don't think you need watercooling. I think you just need some decent case cooling. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

What he said
I have the 5600 U and run it on high 1024 2x AA and have no visible lag and it looks great.
After about 40FPS, the eye notices jack s***. _________________ »4 RS«»1Ж «»1 DENE«»1 FREAKIN LAME OH«»1 MONEY MONEY«

before he can get good case cooling he needs to get good apartment cooling. But those temps arent that bad, taking into account the other factors he is dealing with. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

I'de agree that if you can afford it, go with the 9800, but I have a 9600 pro 256mb, and I've been able to run doom3 at the highest settings without any problems. The fps has been around 45 or so, then drops to about 25 when there is a lot going on. I've been really happy with the card. And you can probably get one for $130.
Sorry i don't have any benchmarks to report. |

Wait, how much system ram do you have?
Make sure the agp aperature size is set to 128mb. This seems to yeild the best performance. Few know why this is but it just does. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

It may be unnoticable but I would try the agp aperature size at 128mb. I have found in a few cases that it will add up to 500more points (alot of variables involved) in 3dmark01se. I know there have been a few other tests like this. Google for them and you'll probably find that they find the same results. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Hmm, thats odd, my comp runs doom 3 amazingly at 1024, why would i need to run it on anything else, i even have a 5200! most games come shipped now built with the latest updated driver fixes, so if you dont have them...of course its going to run slow. I went to Nvidia.com and downloaded the latest driver for my card (12Mb) and doom runs at about 42-48FPS, before i updated the driver it ran at like 14-20 also, incase nobody knew (dont know if this was already said) but doom 3 has a benchmark command from the console, open it using CTRL+ALT+~ and then type benchmark. but anyways, the game is rediculously freaky, definantly an "only play at night" kinda game. They way the game flows together is just amazing, honestly, you have to see it to understand how amazing this game is! _________________ P4 Northwood 2.6 HT @ 2.8 Intel 865PE

also just want to add that the detail of the game hasnt noticeably changed for me, when i tried playing on 640x480, which ever video mode you play on you'll still get the full effect of the game. _________________ P4 Northwood 2.6 HT @ 2.8 Intel 865PE
