alright yall, i just got a macintosh lc 550 from my friend. i was wondering if it is possible to make a set of disks with mac os 7.5 with my pc that will boot this mac. the os was running fine but it was missing key network utilities. and now all of a sudden the os wont boot...
so this thing only has a floppy drive so is there a way to make a set of boot disks(floppy) with a pc.

ouch!
damn that isn't even powerPC.
If it was powerPC you could at least have put OS 9 on it.
used to have those disks around here somewhere... but i most likely threw em out a while ago.
don't think you can use pc cause pc can't handle mac formatted disks. I know mac can handle pc format disks, but not sure if they can install an OS off mac formatted disks... try checking ebay if someone is trying to dump OS8 or 7.5 or something.

I would try google for a solution. There must be some way to format the disks and write them so they can be read by a mac.

I know of only one way to make a PC disk compatable as a boot disk on a MACincrap.

1) open the MAC and locate CPU, remove and throw away, repeat with rest of internals.

2) Stick an ITX mainboard and 1Ghz CPU inside of MAC.

3) stick the PC OS of your choice on the drive.

Voila! your pc boot disks will now work on the "MAC"

I'ts a MAC (BLERUGH!!) why would you want to bother using a MAC??

If you wanted serious advice (I don't think a MAC user can give such advice) why dont you ask on a MAC <spits> website.
try http://www.macnn.com
or try the forums at macnn http://forums.macnn.com/
I feel sick!

Just don't say that I sent you, you may not like the reply! Lets just say MacNN know me (and the rest of the boarding party we sent over). It was nasty. it started of as friendly, but those damn MAC heads went too far (and the idiot moderator who started the whole war) so OCN and MacNN went to war!

haha its supposedly a working one, i just cant turn it on :) so its just sitting. What parts do u need, cause it also came with extras, i have 2 keyboards and 2 mice... I would have taken apart the case already but honest to god i cant figure out how. I spent an hour after taking out all the screws that I could find trying to open the damn thing... with no luck. I got it for free with a monitor and all this chit, but i have never used one so im just kinda looking at it for now :)

Its been a LONG time since i've used a mac (7+ years) but if i remember right, macs are turned on via the keyboard. At least i remember it that way.

MACs!
My opinion of a lot of you has just droped through the floor. I have a pet hatred of the infernal machine!
What's with the mac and that cycloptic mouse? just how BIG do you need a mouse button? I know that some MAC users praise the mac for it's simplicity, but jeesus! how simple does it have to be "help! my mouse has two buttons - I'm confused!" as for the software base - WHAT saoftware base?

Appart from DTP and graphic work, what other uses do need a mac for? I know it USED to be the best for video and graphics and sound, but not any more.
I guess I'll just never figure you Mac heads out!

I will admit that the G4 and G5 CPUs are a powerfull bit of hardware, but it's a Mac and as such all that power never sees full use, though this is mostly due to the uses that Mac owners impose.

I honestly would like for someone to explain why they use a Mac.

haha, i have never really used it seeing as i cant turn it on. i just figured that I would get to know it because so far the only systems that i am familiar with is a pc with windows or linux. I was just trying to learn a lil more about them. haha, i say the same things about them, they are useless, but then i realized that i had never actually used one to see, so i figured i would just discover for myself sence one became available to me :)

most macs are turned on via the keyboard.
I have a Umax c600 (mac clone)
at least it has pci architecture, ide (as well as scsi), and other more or less standard parts. i can add usb to it if i wanted...
has dual video out and rca in so i could do video editing on it (right lol)

Mostly i use it for msn and irc cause the damn thing is immune to most virii out there. plus there isn't any software for it... i managed to install the latest version of OS 9 on it and that's about as far as it will go without having to use some weird L2 cache upgrade card. but why would i want a state of the art mac? i mean for just msn and irc! If i had some decent monitors to go with it (got two 14") I'ld use it for webbrowsing.

well at least all the mac junk was free...

hold up here i didnt ask for an apple bashing. apple is an excellent company everything made by apple is high quality high standard shi*. i had the privlage of going on a tour of apple here in the south bay and what they were doing then was some premium s***. in all honesty if mac was more versitile with gaming etc. i would have no qualms switching over to a dual 2.5ghz g5 liquid cooled system.... but then i dont got the cash and apple isnt versatile so im damn sure im pc'ing for the rest of my days.

plexi glass window
amd 2000+or a tbird1.1
ecs mobo
nvidia vanta tnt2

SS...i hope you werent talking to ME.....=P
they atill are some of the forefronters in graphics and audio.......i consider macs more of a specialty user device.........all around users get PCs........while people who use this comp for one thing and one thing alone...(since there is no software for it).........just my two cents

gmoney i'll be happy to help with whatever i can as well......=]

Umm be carefull with the monitor tube if you are going to remove it, it could *implode* and you don't want large chunks of glass sticking out your head, it could even kill you!

You should be able to get a vid card that will drive the Mac's picture tube, I saw a site where a guy had done exactly this. sorry no link, can't remember where it was.
