|
|
I've read somewhere, but what do I use to clean up the processor and heatsink from the thermal paste it has on it? Maybe there isn't anything in particular, just checking I've got a new heatsink on the way with some AS5, just making sure before I do anything. _________________ Love Is Not Enough... |

Yeah, using Jack would be alcohol abuse (plus its only 40% ABV)
Cue-tips and 70%+ isopropyl rubbing alcohol is what you need to use. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Dunno about using J.D, what about using Absinthe? thats about 90% PURE ethenol, though it may well be illeagal in your area :) I mean it *is* considered a drug afterall
Mind you with the price of the damn stuff, I doubt you would wana use it in this way (£70 -£80 per litre). Damn I have had some great times with that stuff, I get the REAL absinthe, this is the stuff that is illegal in most prts of the world (or grey area at least) Wormwood is the culprit, and the essential ingredient.
This may sound off topic, but belive me, this stuff will clean anything! I used it to remove indelable ink and that UV ink that is used for security marking.
BTW, if you've never drank this stuff, it's good. you don't get drunk, your mind stays quite clear exept your body is drunk. The mind retracts in horror, no longer able to comunicate with the spinal cord. Whats worse is you can actually watch yourself behaving in this terrible way.

I would, only I don't think that customs and excise would like it, I gota get mine shipped in from Spain as "wine". God help the poor sod who decides to nick a bottle and drink it, The Alcohol content is so high it BURNS your mouth. If you hold a small amount in your mouth you can actually feel it evaporate, though by this point your mouth is both on fire and NUMB!
Should be drank with 1 part Absinthe, 3 parts water and filtered through sugar (bitter when mixed with water, the wormwood forms a condensate, starts off clear and becomes cloudy). I prefer to drink it NEAT, though you gota drink it slow or you'll regret it.
Facts:
Absinthe was created by a Mr Pernod, also the guy who made the drink of the same name "Pernod". Guns and Roses and Ozzy Osbourne all say you should'nt drink this stuff, and it even has a MEDICAL warning Oh yeah, and Vincent Vangough was drinking this when he cut off his own ear!
Explains a lot really, does'nt it ?

GREAT quote/movie.......=]

except we had it straight as well. It was interesting.
Ummmmmmm. back to topic, yeah, thats it... I would trying using a non-acitone nail polish remover for everything you need to remove. It is by far the best all-purpose sticky stuff remover out there. It will not eat through a cl;ear-coat finish but ti definately get the goo off. _________________ "....Or as almost every word in a sentence; Tweak the tweaking tweakers!"

Topic....yes...Okay I'll let you guys in on a secret, since I like all of you....
After using the alcohol (of which ever sort you prefer) to remove the old "goop" there is something else you can use to leave the surface very clean and ready to accept the new thermal compound. ...
.....
.....
It's called......soap and water...... been used for years....works wonderfully for cleaning things....but doesn't dry as quickly.
Seriously...take a heatsink for example....clean it all up with alcohol as best you can...take a white cotton cloth with a little dish water on it, and wipe where you just cleaned.....residue you can see on the rag....
A little soap and lotsa water. Let it dry completely. The recommended amount of AS and it'll get a great thermal connection.
Oh, and if it's a really used heatsink....take it to the dishwater and clean it. Gets all that film off of the fins and chit. (don't wash the fan though...electricity''water =not good) _________________ .

I recall hearing about an incident a little while ago where someone else could have used that advice. _________________ "....Or as almost every word in a sentence; Tweak the tweaking tweakers!"

| I use electrical contact cleaner, but you must be very careful. Take the heatsink/chip out of the case. Spray the cleaner on a clean soft cloth (a little dab'll do ya) and gently rub the surface. This also works great to remove the thermal pad stuff that Intel puts on their heatsinks. This stuff smells hideous and can't be good for you, so go to the garage or outside. |

Hey guys, thanks for the replys. I got my heatsink in yesterday and got it installed, pretty smoothly. Had to remove the fan though, to get the motherboard tray to fit back in the case though. Hmm and I can't control the speed of the fan but I can fix that. Haha, and my power connections got messed up (thanks to the power button on the mobo though I can start it) but it's no big deal, I'll get around to fixing the minor problems soon. But the good new is temps have dropped by ~15C, so it's working quite nicely.

15C is freaking awesome. When a good heatsink and good thermal paste are applied, the stock counterparts are left in the dust. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Yeah no kidding. I thought my overclock was great with stock cooling, but after I break this in I'll really see what kind of an o/c I can get _________________ Love Is Not Enough... |

With all this talk of using alcohol, chemicals, and illegal substances to clean off thermal paste, I have a feeling that me being able to remove all of the thermal paste off my video card's GPU/heatsink with a kleenex is .... not good? _________________ -Brandon |

Next time you go to the Doctor's office,,,When they leave you alone in the exam room, grab a handfull of those alchohol prep-pads they use when you get an injection!
they are lint-free, and 91% alchohol!
i know this is technically stealing...but they shouldn't leave you in there alone for so long |

^^^^Not a bad Idea....But you can buy those prep pads at Walgreens or most any pharmacy. And... they are pretty cheap like 2 or 3 bucks for a whole box. _________________ .

well, three shots of whiskey ain't bad........ or was that the searing pain, stabing in the arm kind of shots
Actually methalated spirit (methanol to the 'merkins) is about as good as it gets, cheap, purple, cleans and evaporates quickly and tastes good with a twist of lemon........NO don't try and drink it! youl go blind! And using a brail keyboard is not easy.......I can tell you! <searches for white cane>

| How do u know its white, and it was the searing pain in the arm kinda shot.. And one of them, wasnt really a shot. It was to test for teburculousis. (spelling) And they insert some fluid in the skin, and it pulls the layers apart and hurts like a bitch 10 times worse then a shot, i dont mind shots :) |

Hmm good point <thinking if he could get away with painting blind peoples sticks horrible colours......hmmm>sorry, bypassed my moral cpu
What the hell? pulls the skin apart?? Are yuo sure it was a TB test? they might just not like you or somthing..........
I was in hospital many years ago having some tests, got a student doctor he could'nt get the canular needle into my vein, he stabed my arm that many time he collapsed the vein. So he thought it would be a good idea to try the other arm, as per training he once again said " you'll just feel a small prick" so I said "Come on Doc, your not that small...." Man, that git stuck that needle into the BONE!
Doctors just don't have a sense of humour
