Okay...here's how this started. I have a 13 yo boy. He comes to me with the original idea raising up the computer and running his moniter, mouse, KB, etc. cables under the bottom to keep em "clean." (unlike his room)
Before I summarily dimissed the idea in my fatherly fashion, I started thinking......What would this do to the layout of stuff? How would it effect the always problematic cooling?
Long story short. (forgive my sketch) ATX mobo 90*, PS 90*. All air except for the front HD fan is linear. With the hot stuff closer to the cooler air, and the PS fan(s) helping port heat out more directly.
Obviously, some major details to be worked out. Might be do-able. Any thoughts. Seen anybody else try it?
Thought maybe we could have some fun with this.

an original idea!
except for the PSU,(the A/C cord would be sticking out the top of the case), it's a Great Idea!
Leaves Lots of options for modding! :^) _________________ Yeah....... ok |

that looks interesting. the only problem I see with it is installing the cables and such. You would have to turn the pc on its side to plug them in. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

Cables out the bottom would be major pain. Thought maybe a tip forward on a hinge arrangement. Of course, once they are there they are hidden away. Which is what the original idea was all about. I was the one who worried about cooling and such. Depending on particular mobo, the cabling inside might be easier to hide. (flop, sata, ide) Thinking even one of them Zalman fanless GPU sinks might work nice, right next to that input fan, and being vertical.
Absolutely MUST have USB out the front though. _________________ .

what if you mount the i/o ports of the mobo, and therefore the whole mobo, about4 inches from the bottom of the case...............this way the plugs are inside the case..........=] _________________

Not a bad idea TH. Would have to put a bar in to support cards.
Would have to take the side off hook up cables. But that's easier than tipping case to do it. Also gives me a bit of room to "channel" the air where it's needed. _________________ .

the psu would have to be mounted in the normal orientation. But that shouldnt be a problem.
One thing I was thinking about last night was with the motherboard being turned like that. It would put the cpu right under the memory and since the cpu is generally the hottest thing, and knowing that heat rises. You may have to duct the hot air away from the cpu or you might have to duct cool air to the memory. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

I could mod a supply if I needed. But.....The memory is a very good point I hadn't thought of. (this is why I posted this)
Certainly couldn't use a Max3 either. The ducting and fan would be going the wrong way. _________________ .

just some kind of inverted roof angled shield would prolly work....like a heat deflector shield......=].......but also.....with the CPU on the bottom, it would reside much closer to the coldest section of the case........hopefully would drop temps, as well as hide those wires.....=] _________________

I have thought about the cpu heat issue some more and I have come up with this.
you can use a zalman cpu hsf like this:
http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/cpu-zal-08.html
and have the fan mounted to that it pulls the air thru the heatsink and then use a duct that directs the air out of the case. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

Heat IS the big issue here. Why do it, if there's no advantage. The thought was to make the hot stuff be down in the cold air. So I started to look at a few MB's to see if there was one better configured than others. Heating up the memory kinda sucks. But the current config has the vid and bridge heating the CPU. I turn it and I heat the memory with the CPU and bridge.
So then I remember....the article I read the other day on the BTX.
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1593
Now I'm really scratchin my head. This is the way we are going to go in the next year? I know these are reference designs but they won't change much between manufacturers. In all cases memory is up. Gettin' hot from bridge and CPU. AND...this form factor (BTX) will be 90nm chips almost exclusively. Gee....they don't get hot....do they? cough, cough
So what's up with this? Is the new generation of memory gonna thrive on heat? Will Zalman be selling us some heatpipe solution for our DDR3? Will the OC weakspot be memory?
I guess the bottomline is....somethings gonna get hot. So what'll take the heat best? _________________ .

wow...my eyes hurt...
i thought they had reversed the pics, but i guess btx cases will open on the right side..WTF?
did you see the size of that CPU cooler?
this is just another way for Intel to force us into buying all new products! _________________ Yeah....... ok |

I'm with you.....WTF
Is that a CPU cooler, or some "flux capacitor" or "fuel cell powered, thermo-electric chiller"?
Open on the other side....maybe I could get used to it.
But where's the heat going?? There's going to be more heat to get rid of. _________________ .

BTX was supposed to be out around the same time as the prescott so that it wouldn't seem as bad.
I'ld worry mostly about the powersupply... wiring issues mostly... cause that ATX connector will have a long way to go, not to mention the powercord sticking out the top....
Love the idea though...
look at the lian-li v1100 |
