Check and see all the programs starting up in WinXP, 98 and see if they should be there.

Another place is to go to start->run and type "services.msc". Just highlight one of the services and a brief explanation is provided to the left. Double left clicking on service will let you set it the way that you want. Make sure you know what you are doing because some of those services might be required to boot your machine!!!

Update: You will find this in msconfig as well--my bad.

Thanks Nathan and Robin, i've check this out, and it really helps!

Just a side not, make sure you kno what you're doing, or you'll be facing some pretty confusing and dangerous consequences.
