I'm not sure if this will be the right forum, but I've been encountering problems with my 3com on board lan, sometimes when i start up, it tells me that the cable is unplugged and i have to restart my MODEM to get the signal again. Any thoughts?

Hey Peer,
Thanks for the quick response. Sorry, but as i've mentioned, i don't touch these things lots, is it possible if you can give me some directions on how to assign different IRQ and DMAs to the lan? If it would be easier, u can just email me. Thanks!

I am by no means an expert on this... Sounds like a connection problem to me!
You might want to provide more detail about your setup for some of the "Uber" Tweakers... They may ask: More than 1 computer? Router? Modem Type, etc...
As an aside: Almost everything that I have read states that if you are only using one LAN connection to use the nVidia port. Supposedly it is less of a resource hog. _________________ AMD XP 2500+ Barton

I only have one computer directly connected to the modom, no router, no hub, nothing. The cable stays connected, one thing i find interesting is that when i turn off my computer, the lan light stays on (on the mobo), so i can conclude that my mobo is still somewhat on when i turn the computer off. Cuz the lights for the PCI slots and teh lan are both on..bright green..haha..so yeh..

It is normal for the lights to stay on for the mobo unless you switch off your power supply or unplug the whole thing. I believe what Peer is trying to get at is a resource conflict. I assume you are using some version of Windows??? If so, you can right click "My Computer" and select properties, then open the "device manager". From here you shold see a "network connections" tab (as well as everything else), Look for an exclamation point inside little yellow circle. This means you have some type of conflict. I would go through the several types of available views (by resource, etc...) and list any suspicious lookin messages so that the Tweak experts can further help you.
There should also be a "hardware conflict" helper in Windows Troubleshooting that may shed some light on the problem. Either way I would post any issues or odd looking things you may find for better direction on fixing the problem. _________________ AMD XP 2500+ Barton

I misunderstood the LAN light comment you made... The light will be on / or flash as long as the cable and/or LAN is showing activity since it is "always connected" to the outside world. _________________ AMD XP 2500+ Barton

Can you try to assign a different IRQ and DMA to the LAN or MODEM ?
That way they will have nothing to do with eachother any more ...
Good luck ! |
hey bud, could you please take a screen shot of where you set your DMA to the LAN or Modem? This is a new one on me
Exactly what bus is the modem using?
But seriously for a second...think the LAN port is even going to a setting other than the IRQ given that it's intergrated in the chipset? hmm

Two questions for you...
1. Have tried using the NVidia connection instead of the 3COM? Wth only one PC, what difference would using one over the other make, until you had time time to research the issue further? It seems that switching would make zero difference to your setup (except that it might stay connected now)...unless you have a thing for 3COM.
I have always found 3COM to be a bit quirky and in need of "special attention" . Even their drivers are packaged oddly.
I have a docking station for my laptop here (in Win2K Pro) on which is a 3COM port....it behaves the same way as you describe, so instead of dealing with the hassle, I use the NIC on the laptop itself.
2. What drivers are you using? Or did you just install XP and hope for the best?
I do belive that there is a separate folder on the CD that came with the MOBO which has the specific drivers for the 3COM ethernet port. |

I haven't tried the Nvidia lan on the mobo yet, maybe i should. All the drivers are updated strait from the Asus CD and the internet, so it should be quite updated as to my knowledge.

Turn your computer off.
Reboot the modem by unplugging it from power. Leave for 5 minutes.
Plug power back into modem and wait for modem to boot up fully. Turn on your computer.
See if it works, if not, call your ISP. _________________ Owner & Administrator

| Quote: | Oh btw : DMW : You are absolutely right .... DMA on a LAN or MODEM is ludacris ...
But its in the settings anyhow ... |
that's what I am asking....because for kicks, I looked, and there weren't any setting that I could find in XP-Pro.

this is where I think it's just a 3COM thing...becuase the one 3COM coneection in my house (I use Linksys for EVERYTHING! hehe) is the only one that has this intermittence.
Ther other 5 connections are solid as a rock.
there was an update for the 3COM drivers on Asus' site....you'll have to check the release version of the set that you have.
get them here:

just an updated FYI...
I just loaded XP onto a drive with this mobo...I waited til XP was finished...used the device manager, right clicked on he LAN ethernet devices and chose update driver....then directed XP to the folder "LAN" on the CD that shipped with the MOBO.....I am now using the 3COM with no errors.
I also installed but disabled the NVidia port. |
