go to www.dslreports.com and use their speed and tweak tests. they work very well.
then use dr. tcp to optimize your modem. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

I personally used to use them but found that they overall slowed my connection rather than helping it.
Go to www.blackviper.com and use there Windows Services Tweaks and kill the unnecessary services you don't need. _________________ Owner & Administrator

Modem question: We're getting a Cable high speed connection in a few weeks, (WHEEEEE EEEEEE!) ....and the cable guy said I need to buy (or rent NO!) a cable modem. I need advice on which one is good for the best price....? I am completely in the dark on this one, (what's new?... ) Anybody got any ideas? _________________ ♫ Josh Awards=+12 -5 =7 ~HaM=3~ Ж=3 ~Zero_Fresh=3~Burgundian Award=1~JW=4 ~ ÿ =1~Sean=1~Dene=3 ~Putale Kudos=1~GMoney=4~Sally Grommit Award=1~Bunni & Badger=2 Gold Stars ♫

How much is it to rent one? If you rent (which is pretty common) if anything ever goes wrong with the modem, the cable company should be able to replace it asap. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

congrat's
just be sure you NEVER have to go back to Dial-Up...you will HATE the Internet after experiencing High Bandwidth
I don't know much about Cable Modems, but I highly recommend getting a good Firewall Router to put between the modem and your PC, unprotected High-Speed connections are Easy Targets for hSLackers
I'm sure someone will come along soon to point you in the right direction hardware-wise _________________ Yeah....... ok |

Thanks guys.. What would I do without my TN Geniuses? ..
The (Charter Cable) guy said that their highspeed connection has a free firewall built in, with a good anti-virus too,,, it seems like a good company. We're getting the TV cable at the same time too, kind of a package deal. He told me in the early Spring, they're going to offer a phone hook-up to the computer, free long distance anywhere, and it works just like a regular phone. Wonder what that'll cost???..
JW, the modem rents for $9.99 per month, and they sell one for $59.00. Do Modems break very often?... There's a "low speed" deal for $2.99 rental every month, that he says is still 8 times faster than dial-up (which is agony) but doesn't have a lot of the advantages that the HS does. _________________ ♫ Josh Awards=+12 -5 =7 ~HaM=3~ Ж=3 ~Zero_Fresh=3~Burgundian Award=1~JW=4 ~ ÿ =1~Sean=1~Dene=3 ~Putale Kudos=1~GMoney=4~Sally Grommit Award=1~Bunni & Badger=2 Gold Stars ♫

after browsing newegg.com, it looks like $60.00 is about the going price for a cable modem. (don't go for the "low-speed" thing, you will probably end up upgrading later anyway).
Is the firewall built into the modem itself? or is it on the Charter servers? I would still consider a router, just for the fact that you can network a second PC iff you decide to get one _________________ Yeah....... ok |

If you have more than one computer, DEFINATELY get a router. If you only have one computer, you might want to try a software firewall like Zone alarm and an antivirus like AVG.
I'm not sure about the antivirus and firewall thing he talked about. Maybe their email server has virus scanning? Cable guys are hard to trust. Some just say what they were trained to say - point in case - this happened when the parents got cable and i set up the network.
Me -"Can we hook up this router now"
Cable guy -"This connection is only for one computer. You'll have to get the high speed package to hook up more than one"
Me -ROTFLMAO "Oh, i got the same connection at home with 4 computers on it. We've got no problems whatsoever."
Cable guy - "Yeah, thats just what i've been told"
The connection was 1500kbps down and 200kbps up.
Anyway, that rental seems pretty high. Usually is about $3-5 US a month to rent. I have seen a cable modem get hit by lightning and go bad, but cable modems rarely bum out. I've only seen one (out of dozens). If you buy theirs, make sure they have a decent warranty - 1 year or better. I don't think you could go wrong that way. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

I sell ALOT of cable modems and routers at my job, really we've never had a problem using Linksys cable modems. The should run you under the $70ish range. And they are stackable so if you go with a Linksys router, it keeps the clutter down....
Renting that modem seems steep, I think that you should just go and buy one. As long as you have a surge protector for your cable line, you'll be fine!!!

Thanks HD, I do have a huge battery back-up system, so I thinkl I'll buy one. I've heard of Linksys... Clutter is definitely a problem!
Only one computer, JW but there might be another one soon. We had 2, but I gave one to Mom when her old one started acting up. LOL on your cable guy, I'll be sure to check with you guys before I do anything! The one I talked to sounded knowledgable, but it all sounds good to me at this point. YOU guys, I trust!
I'll have to doublecheck to see where the firewall really is Ham, but I have a couple weeks to research all of this before the installation..That's a great question.
Hey, thanks for the 2 cents from everybody, it's worth a fortune to us dummies!.. _________________ ♫ Josh Awards=+12 -5 =7 ~HaM=3~ Ж=3 ~Zero_Fresh=3~Burgundian Award=1~JW=4 ~ ÿ =1~Sean=1~Dene=3 ~Putale Kudos=1~GMoney=4~Sally Grommit Award=1~Bunni & Badger=2 Gold Stars ♫

Linksys has fine stuff....GET A ROUTER. Spend the extra $50 and get a linksys router to go with it. Don't have high speed without one.

Quoted for much wisdom!!
But before you buy a modem from an outside source (ie BestBuy or the like) make sure it is able to be used on their cable network. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

I agree,
I just got a linksys router and it worx like a charm. In fact, i think my internet connection got slightly faster because of it. Im sure its blockin all the adware/spyware crap that gets to your temp internet files on regular browsing. And those annoying programs do use bandwaidth, unknowingly.
Additionally, I have zone alarm, and norton. Its just like wearing a condom, the more protection the better !!!!!!!!!!!!!! _________________ P4 3.0C (Yup thatz the Northwood)

Just wanted to add that cable modems are still dependent on the company. I used to have Charter (company sucks, prices are high here, and speeds are unreliable at best), and I was only able to use a couple of brands of modem. I'm on Optimum now, which I find to be 100000000 times better than Charter (out here, Charter was only 1.5/128, for $50 a month, I have 10/2 now for $40), and they'll work with Motorola, Linksys, and Toshiba modems.
Check with Charter in your area, to see what they support, since they have to send the programming to the modem. Doesn't do you any good to buy the top of the line modem, if Charter doesn't have programming to make it work. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

DLINK IS ALSO STACKABLE
and if your planning on oppening up
a network later down the road go with a router and not a 5 port switch
router gives you better protection with builtin firewall |
