|
|
well, I was reading this article and found out a little something....and of course all of the forum features and support groups at Asus are "temporarily suspended from this day forward" (wtf?)
anyway, to my point...the board seems to NOT meet one, some or all (I cannot verify) of the features needed to be certified by NVidia for the SoundStorm Certification.
this article was written yesterday 3/31/03
| Quote: | To avoid confusion, I e-mailed NVIDIA, asking them if they could clear the air on SoundStorm. And here's what Bryan Del Rizzo, NVIDIA's Integrated PR Manager has to say :-
A product can be branded NVIDIA SoundStorm(tm) only if it meets the requirements listed below. Products that qualify for the SoundStorm brand are eligible to use the Dolby(R) Digital logo and branding. Products cannot get the Dolby certification nor use the Dolby Digital logo without participating in the SoundStorm program. Such products must have the following items as they are not optional :-
- NVIDIA nForce(tm)2 platform processor-based motherboard that includes the MCP-T with APU supporting Dolby Digital 5.1 encoding
- Discrete (non-shared) front left and right analog outputs
- Discrete (non-shared) rear left and right analog outputs
- Discrete (non-shared) center and subwoofer analog outputs
- Discrete (non-shared) S/PDIF digital output (coax recommended, but they can do optical)
- Discrete (non-shared) line-in analog inputs
- Discrete (non-shared) microphone analog input
- Minimum 85db signal-to-noise ratio on all analog outputs
- Minimum 80db signal-to-noise ratio on all analog inputs
- Dolby Digital testing, certification, approval from Dolby and NVIDIA
Currently, there are only three tested and certified products that meet the SoundStorm / Dolby certification criteria :-
- ABIT NF7-S
- MSI K7N2G-ILSR with S-Bracket
- Shuttle SN41G2 small form-factor PC
There are no provisions for upgrading to a SoundStorm solution or adding SoundStorm capabilities after a product is in the consumers hands. The product must contain everything necessary to provide full audio functionality in accordance with the SoundStorm program out-of-the-box and be tested and approved by NVIDIA and Dolby. This is done to ensure the best quality and consumer experience possible, and to guarantee a minimum level of quality on all SoundStorm branded products.
Other boards are currently in certification.
Conclusion
That certainly clears up all the confusion on SoundStorm, doesn't it?
As you can see, only three products have so far been given SoundStorm certification. No other products can claim SoundStorm support. Please note that NVIDIA initially reported the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard to be SoundStorm-certified but apparently, they have been dropped from the list.
So, if you are looking for SoundStorm-compliant motherboard, look no further than these three products - the ABIT NF7-S motherboard, the MSI K7N2G-ILSR (with S-Bracket) motherboard and the Shuttle SN41G2 small form-factor PC. |
I have found reference to this topic on more than one site....
It seems that Asus should be held accountable for the deception. I also see that the article reads that NVidia did certifiy the board initially, but Asus knew well in advance that it's product wasn't meeting the reference spec given to them. Those that already have the board, did not get what they were lead to know by the packaging. Now, the board may be certified in the near future...but with what type of revision....hardware or a bios issue? This is where and why I was trying to find out which of the qualifications it is lacking.
The board seems to still be the best performing nForce2 board out there, but I am also looking to replace my SB Live Drive! (going to miss the front volume control for the headphones)... and I want to make sure that I KNOW what I am getting before it ships.
I have been following this board extensively on "another" site, with a thread dedicated to this board....MANY people have issues with the sound on this MOBO..... but then some people do not.
thoughts? |

When will a version of this board come out that is CERTIFIED for the SoundStorm chipset?
Will it be a bios update or a hardware change? |
Is there anyone on this board that is using this MOBO, and having issues with the sound?
I have seen plenty of posts elsewhere. But it will still only make up a small percentage of the total boards produced. |

The drop from the certification list is only a temporary situation. It will be returning soon. I heard around the neighbourhood that it was not due to the capabilities of the motherboard, because it was indeed certified at the start. _________________ Owner & Administrator

As I said earlier, it wasn't a hardware problem.
It's more of a professional problem.
That's all I can say. _________________ Owner & Administrator

It's a limitation in politics, not technology. Read that ASUS hasn't paid for Dolby certification. _________________ There's no such thing as a meme. Pass it on. |

I've been thinking of getting this board along with an AMD XP2200 CPU. From what I see, I think all that matters is the chipset, maybe the SoundStorm, but i wouldn't say no to the mobo just because of that. It's for the price, and performance, if you have a good enough sound card ( i'm still using an SB 5.1Live Dolby wiht the Logitech 560THx system), it should most likely be the same, then again, i'm not a hardcore sound guy or anything. As long as there's 4 speakers and a bass with a 5.1 card, it will suit my needs, and mind me, but i'm sure it will suit most of the gamers out there.
The only cons about this mobo is maybe the lack of GLan..but to be honest with you, a mobo that has 2 network plugs is by far the best anyone can ask for.

I just find it a little hard to come to terms with a company like Shuttle being able to "anti-up" and not Asus.
I want to know why it WAS on the approved list and then was removed?
Together with this and the issue they are having on the SATA chipsets not functioning (and in many cases corrupting OS setup all together). I am just a bit more curious about how many bugs they let this one out the door with.

I too have a Live Drive!, but I am looking to free up a little space inside when my next box is built because of the water cooling, ferris wheels and 3 ring flea circus that are going to be inside!
The Deluxe can be found for as little as 133.00 shipped these days, bringing it back down to reality from a few places that demand 150+ b4 shipping (ouch). |
