Hey guys, reformatted about 2 weeks ago. I think i deleted something in the startup tab in msconfig that i shouldn't have...but i thought for sure it was malware.
Anywho, now whenever i start it says the welcome screen, then my background displays and the cursor is in the middle of the screen. Then after about 5 seconds it logs me off and back to the login screen, no taskbar loads and now icons show on the desktop.
Any idea what this could be? Tried "last known good settings" and "debugging mode" but the don't work.
Windows XP Pro with NO service packs installed. Thanks. |

#1 rule of tweaking, DON'T ever erase anything without knowing what you are doing.
Restore your computer to a date prior to the delete you did.
Make sure to back up anything you have created after then. _________________ Owner & Administrator

if you mean use the "restore to last known working configuration" in windows XP...that didn't work...if you mean re-install...that sucks |

Insert the Win XP cd upon start up.
Boot from it, but instead of installing again, select the Fix Windows or something like that (it should come after it's detected your installation of Windows).
Try that. _________________

you would need to do a repair.
when booting from your cd it will detect your current install and it will give you a choice of a complete install or a repair. choose repair and you will be on your way to being able to use your computer again. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

Nonono, use XP's system restore. Backup your data first.
Start---Run----Type Restore in the box, click ok.
Double click the rstrui icon.
Highlight REstore my computer to an earlier time.
Click next, pick the date and then click next.
Let it do it's job and it should reboot and whala! Back to the way it was.
A tweaker's dream! _________________ Owner & Administrator

perhaps that might work...except, the taskbar doesn't come up...which means neither does the start button...all that shows is the background and the cursor, then about 5 seconds later it logs me off and back to the welcome login screen! _________________ ASUS A8R-MVP

While it's logging in, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and see if you can end process explorer.exe. That may stop it from logging out. If not then quickly try Ctrl+Alt+Del and then in the Task Manager do File > New Task (Run...) and see if you can get to system restore that way.
Otherwise, stick to the previous suggestions of repairing windows using the boot up disk. _________________
