I'm a bit of a newbie at cooling and would like to know what would be better out of the two options below:

1) 5 cooling fans, where 3 are intakes and 2 are exhausts of which there are 3 90mm fans and 2 80mm fans.
2) 7 cooling fans, where there are 4 intakes and 3 exhausts of which all of them are 80mm fans.

I'm trying to figure out which case is better out of the Termaltake XaserV and XaserIII. XaserIII has option 2 and XaserV has option 1. I think that option two seems better.

Also, if you guys don't mind giving your opinions of which one you think is better out of XaserIII and XaserV that would really be great. (Reviews are welcome).

I personally prefer XaserIII as it has more HDD bays than the XaserV and has more cooling power however, XaserV looks much nicer. One final thing I can't figure out. XaserV has two smart fan control knobs that XaserIII doesn't have. What's this all about? And apart from the backlit LED display does anything else differ between the XaserV and the XaserIII front fan speed control and temperature monitoring panel?

Thanks very much for any info. Any opinions reviews will help me make my final decison.

Which is going to be install or intake?

Which size is going to be in each place.

Ha, tricky one.

The Thermaltake XaserIII:

On the XaserIII they don't tell me wich are intakes or exhasts but I guess the two at the back are exhausts. The two on the side are intakes along with the two on the front and the one on the top is an exhast.

On the XaserV the two on the side are intakes, the one on the top and rear are both exhausts and the one on the front is an intake.

On the XaserIII all fans are 80mm and on the XaserV 90mm real exhaust, 80mm top exhaust, 80mm front intake and two 90mm side intakes.

Do you have to get a thermaltake case?

There are cheaper options that are just as good for cooling and will save you lotsa money.

No, I don't have to stick to Thermaltake, but I like them.

Don't get me wrong suggestions for other cases are more than welcome! As long as they are available in the UK.

If anything I would go with the XaserIII.

Make sure the amount of fans exhausting is equalled by the fans intaking air.

Why do you prefer XaserIII over the XaserV?

Do those smart fan controls do anything? Are they a really good pro to go for a XaserV over a XaserIII.

Hey, well I finally bought myself the XaserIII. It was a kind of one-man race since the XaserV isn't available in the UK yet as it's too new.
However, it seems my 550W Q-Tec PSU cannot cope. I've hooked up all the fans, 1 DVD-ROM, 1 CD-RW, 2 Maxtor hdd drives (160GB and 250GB) and 1GB RAM, with 3 cold cathodes. Those cold cathodes can't light up all the way since they don't get enough power. What's going on?!

make sure its true power your using...is that the psu that came with the case......if so , you may need to consider buying a better psu like an enermax, or an antec truepower

weird . . . just about any 550watt psu should be able to handle those things. maybe you just have too many things on the same line. since voltage is equal to current times resistance (V=IR) you may not be getting enough voltage to your cathodes if they are on the same line. the wire has a certain amount of resistance in it already and the line can only carry a certain amount of current.

long story short, try some stuff on a different line. also, chech your voltage rails to make sure the psu isn't being stressed too much. that would be bad and could ruin alot of your stuff.

You're absolutely right. I had two CD-ROMs, a floppy and 3 cold caths on the same line. Got it sorted now.

I wonder if I play around with the lines I can possibly squeeze more rpms out of the 7 80mm fans. It's just when the fan speeds are turned to min and turned up to max, there aint't that much difference in noise (all my noise is coming from the CPU HSF and Q-Tec PSU). Plus increasing from min all the way to max on all fans changes the temperature by a couple of degrees only.

When installing the probe in the XaserIII under the heatsink, did anyone find that the probe was too long for the small centre cavity of the CPU. I couldn't fit mine in so i had to just leave it dangling inside the case.
