XP issues...

OK here's a new one for me...
I built a PC for a friend of the family (big mistake in the first place!).
Installed XP for them...we had 5 users with individual logins and all was dandy... until they informed me that they were going to intall AOL.... well, I then told them "ALL BETS ARE OFF"....lol

But seriously...I told them that I couldn't promise them anything if they insisted on that AOL crap.

They had random reboots and some really funky stuff that I hadn't seen a PC do before.
So then after a few months they dumped AOL and went with a cable ISP.
I was then able to get it reloaded with a fresh install of XP...

Here's the problem:
I am unable to get the mutiple accounts to just "switch users while logged in.
This time around each user has to log-off before the next one can use the machine.
Under the account settings I am unable to keep the "Use Fast User Switching" box checked....I can check it...but when you leave the page, the selection i lost and it reverts back to "Use the Welcome Screen".

It was doing this both before and after I applied the SP1 and all security updates.

My only 'unknown' is whether i used the 'developer edition' copy of XP PRO or the retail Corp. disc....

my thought is that if I used the developer disc, then this function might be disabled....
ANY IDEAS?

Here, I'll run this by a few resources and see if I can't come up with something today...

So far nothin...I'd recommend a fresh install. AOL software is almost like a worm/trojan...it imbeds itself into your OS, and it's hard to find every instance of it. Some cases, it can be the cause of many a PC conflict.

in fact, the current install does not have AOL installed (I did not think that I said it did)....

the problem was as follows:

Under "Services" in Administrative Tools
-Terminal Services
"Allows multiple users to be connected interactively to a machine as well as the display of desktops and applications to remote computers. The underpinning of Remote Desktop (including RD for Administrators), Fast User Switching, Remote Assistance, and Terminal Server."

this item was disabled.
