|
|
i am going to be doing some reorganizing of my pc. it will include new cooling for s/b, n/b, and possibly video card. i would like some thermal paste, something adhesive, to fix the heatsinks to the chips.
i have heard that AS 3 and 5 are adhesive and i have heard that they aren't. i need to have an adhesive and would like your input on a good thermal adhesive if you know of any others.
also, which is better: as3 or as5. i hear 3 is but then they have almost completely done away with it.
thanks once again. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

artic silver 3 and 5 are not adhesives
I use Arctic Silver adhesive which is 2 tubes one is the acual ahesive and the other is basically as3 or 5 i think they work great
arctic silver 5 is 1 or 2 degrees better then as 3 _________________ p4 3.0c @ 4ghz, Kingston hyperx pc3200 2X256 2-2-2-5 , abit ic7-g vdimm volt modded, Wd Raptor 36 gb

thanks for the reply. i'll try to pick up some adhesive along with some as5 for the cpu. then i'll get to some real overclocking after some modding . . . fan controllers, xbox controller input, lapping, case cuts, actually putting the front and side panels on the case instead of leaving them off. you know the basics. i'm gonna see how much my 2100+ can take
oh yeah, volt mods and anything else i can do too. as soon as i get a halfway decent camera i'll post some case mods. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Do not use the thermal adhesive on the cpu heatsink.
Not that you were but I just wanted to let you know.
Follow the adhesive instructions to the letter and you should be fine. You won't have to use much. _________________ Owner & Administrator

speaking of how to glue something ON......is there any way to remove a heatsink attached with thermal paste......there is a heatsink with no fan attached to my vid card i would liked removed....and in the future when water cooling is my next step, i'll need to get rid of that HUGE sink on my northbridge......any suggestions? _________________

sometimes, you can either heat up something enough for the adhesive to lose its grip or you can bag it up (seal it very tight with as little moisture as possible) and put it in the freezer for a bit. usually pops righ off when you use the freezer alternative. just don't force anything!!! _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Hair dryer works to warm it up so you can take it off or you can put your motherboard in the freezer and make the adhesive brittle so you can pop it off with a butter knife.
Be careful though. _________________ Owner & Administrator

never realiesed you could freeze a mobo, cool.
sounds a bit dangerous though, moisture could do some nasty stuff, i think the hair drier would be better personally, less risk. _________________ »4 RS«»1Ж «»1 DENE«»1 FREAKIN LAME OH«»1 MONEY MONEY«

moisture won't necessarily hurt a motherboard unless the unit is turned on while it has the moisture in it (right weaZel? ) _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

heheh very true Jay! =)
and I have also learned thru some rough experience that the freezing doesnt always work! I used that method when I took the HSF off of my gForce pro 256 back in the day. But when I used that method to remove the small heatsinks that I installed on my gf fx 5900 the memory chips came off with the heatsink. So at this point I knew the card was a gonner so I tried using a little butane lighter to heat the heatsinks and they popped off with ease. But becareful so as not to melt any solder joints. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

yeah its always better that you can learn from someone else! just wish I had the option to do that. I usually have to go thru it first hand. But then I always share what I find. I think its more fun that way! hehe _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

also, you have to put the motherboard in a plastic bag to put it in the freezer.
Forgot to mention that. And make sure you put some cardboard to pry on the motherboard or you will turn your mobo into useless silicon. _________________ Owner & Administrator

definately more fun when you do stuff yourself.
cardboard . . . great idea. i used an older smaller heatsink that was just too tall, so i ended up folding paper a bunch of times. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

first time poster, forgive the revival of an old thread.
I put a heatsink on the computer I am building and have already decided to change it. I was just wondering what is best way to remove the artic silver from the CPU? I heard 99% isopropyl alcohol but didn't want to apply it without hearing more. _________________ Gigabyte K8N-Pro,
