Counterstrike Issues....

Well i originally started playing counterstrike because my ATI vid card came with the coupon for steam... and the sort... but I didnt have the features of the full retail game... so i bought the Halflife platinum set... so i would have it... i installed it and the version is outdated its the 1.5 i believe... but it wont let me update saying my internet connection is invalid... i have Verizon DSL... mcaffee internet security(i tried it with this off and all that too), and thats about all for my system... also a while ago my taskbar started to act up as the clock and icons on the right just disappeared... so what do you guys think...
im gonna uninstall and reinstall just the game later... just to see if it works... if not than im screwed...

install ure halflife, then go to fileplanet.com and download the STEAM HASH, about 300+mb, install it, do a few seconds of steam updates, and ure set.
