|
|
WinXP like all other versions of Windows likes to leave junk behind after installing various programs in the TEMP folders. However, it likes to do it in more than one place!
i.e. (1) C:\ windows\temp (2) C:\ Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp.
This can be a real pain when you have to go hunting to delete the uneeded junk files that pile up in those temp directories! Well, here is the solution to that problem:
1) Go to Start -> Run -> type control and hit OK
2) Go to System -> Advanced tab, and click on Environment Variables at the bottom.
3) Double-click on the TEMP and TMP listings in the User Variable for Administrator (or whoever) Window and then type in the path in the field labeled Variable Value EX: C:\TEMP
4) At the bottom under System Variables -> double-click on the TEMP and TMP variables from that portion of the screen and set the path as you did for User Variable for Administrator
Now all your TMP and TMP files will be gathered in a single TEMP folder, not several! Now it's safe to delete everything in that folder, saving space on ur HD.
-->An additional method to find all those pesky temporary files that waste space on ur HD (this goes for any version of Windows) would be to go to START -> SEARCH OR FIND, in the search box type: *.tmp and hit ENTER. This should pull up a list of all your temporary files on your HD, then just highlight all of them and delete away. I do this whenever I'm doing some standard housecleaning...it's another easy way to remove temp files (Don't forget to permanently remove those files in the recyclebin, otherwise they're still taking up space on your HD )<--
Note: Once in awhile, you won't be able to delete a temp file because it's currently being used, just skip it and move on
