Here is another performance tweak that I've found to free up resources, it involves disabling some of WinXP's visual "fluff".
Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Performance & Maintenance (or if you're viewing Control Panel in classic mode skip this step) -> System -> Advanced tab -> Under Performance, click Settings button -> Visual Effects tab -> Select Adjust for best performance -> and hit OK twice.
There ya go, one less thing WinXP hogs from your resources.
