i built my self a computer, its in a tower case, 6bays and 2 for 3.5 drives... people are telling me that upgrading to a full case tower will improve my air flow and cooling issues, it runs out, and with the future upgrades planned i was wondering if a full case tower would be worth it..
--> i am lookin for a nice full tower (antec if i can), and i dont wanan spend a crap load on the case casue all the other upgrades are going to run me lots of money.
<Antec PlusView1000AMG ATX Tower>

--Radeon 9000pro 128 graphics card
-400walt power supply
-- cd burner, dvd drive, and 3.5 drive

Need more info on your current case. Do you have a pic? How many fans? # of intake fans? # of exhaust fans? When you say your computer is hot, are you talking about case temp or cpu temp? And do you have an actual temperature reading? Is the rig overclocked? Is the 9000pro overclocked? What kind of heatsink are you using on the proc? What is the ambient temperature of the room? Where is your computer located in the room? Answers to these questions will help people understand the specifics of your problem. And then maybe some of us can help.

Well, you addressed some of my questions, but more information is needed to help you. I don't think you have a bad case at all, my guess is that you just have some airflow problems. If you have 3 case fans, you should have two blowing out and one blowing in. You should alway have either equal or more fans blowing hot air out than fans blowing cold air in.
AMD's do run hotter than intels, but you should still get some temperature monitoring. Download and install Motherboard Monitor, although not completely reliable, it should give you and excellent ballpark figure of what your temperatures are at. Compare these temps with other people using the Asus A78x, to see if you really are a lot higher than the norm.
If you want a case with windows, the Raidmax will serve your purpose. But from what I have heard and read, Lian-Li cases have superb quality and workmanship, so I don't know if you would want to give it up for a raidmax case. Maybe you could look into modding the Lian-Li. You put a window in the side with a fan hole or two, and a hole for an exhaust fan in the top, and you will have an case with excellent airflow. It might cost more than buying the Raidmax case, but it would be a good project, and you would definately enjoy your case alot more. If you have access to a dremel, then you are half way there.
Also look at your power supply. All power supplies have a fan blowing hot air out the back, but the newer and more effective psus have atleast one fan in the bottom sucking in air from the case, which will further reduce heat buildup in the case.
Hope this helps. Please post back with your temp readings when you get them.
Good luck.

A couple more ideas:
1 - Rounded Cables - If you don't them, get them. Get good quality rounded cables. It's not just that they look better (they do!) but they don't block air movement like the flat ribbon cables. Get them for both of your IDE channels and your FDD (and any RAID controller you might have, etc.).
2 - If possible, keep your Lian-Li case. It's a great box. However, talk to your neighbourhood supplier to see if they can help you trade-in the side pannel for one with a factory cut window. If not, maybe they'll give you a trade fopr your case on a new L-L with a pre-cut window. Another option: get out the old Dremel and start wailing away...
3 - Like Rhino said: make sure you have enough fans. There are plenty of other threads here at TN about fans, so you can develop your own approach.
4 - Implement some sort of hardware/temperature monitoring. Motherboard Monitor, and/or a monitoring tool that came with your mobo. |
