Hello!

I'm kicking myself over the recent purchase of a pretty sweet Compaq desktop. I haven't had any issues myself except for the one I will get to shortly, but I have heard of and dealt with some HP issues that frighten me. Anyhow, today I noticed that my gig of ram was full and Taskman had approx. 14 IEXPLORE.EXE listed on the "processes" tab, yet I had no IE applications running. I'm assuming that this is a memory leak (which I can probably figure out on my own.) So my question is how to figure the origins of all the processes I have running (besides Internet explorer) and how to most effectively remove the uneccessary processes.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

it sounds like you may have some spyware on your computer that is opening up these IE's. try runing ad-aware. it is a trusted program that effectively eliminates most spyware out there today.
also go to start/run and type "msconfig" go to the "startup" tab and you can choose which programs will start when your computer does. disable anything that looks like it may not be good for your computer. ask if you need help in determining what should and shouldn't run.
these are the only things i can think of at the moment.
heres a link to adaware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

another idea.

try using a program that frees up memory like rampage. there is no reason why 1gb of memory should be used up.

svchost.exe is a program that windows uses for online or network activities as far as i can tell. there should not be more than one copy of this running. when did u get the computer? maybe it needs to go back to compaq or their tech support should be consulted.

yes, it is normal.

Sounds like this guy has a trojan horse virus or a bad case of spyware.

do you have an antivirus program? if not it'd be a good idea to get one soon.
