YouGamers Latest Content: Ship Simulator 2008 Review

Posted by Nathan @ 2:22 PM (EDT)

"Missions vary in length and scope. There are a number of rescue missions, which involve plucking people out of the water and towing ships to shore. More advanced missions include operating multiple tugboats and maneuvering large vessels from their berths in tight quarters. None of the missions are particularly difficult. In fact, after getting up to speed with the basic controls, all of the stock missions can be completed in just a few short hours. The lack of skill required and the omission of rewards – new ships and new locations, for instance – upon successful completion make progressing through missions seem like work (especially the utterly standalone ship-loading mission)."

CoolerMaster Cosmos 1000 Case Review @ Motherboards.org

Posted by Nathan @ 2:22 PM (EDT)

The Cosmos 1000 is a really easy case to work with as it has many ergonomic aspects to it that help alleviate stress during a system build. Being tool-less in its design means that 98% of the installation will not require any additional tools, but installation of the motherboard and its cooling apparatus still needs an old school screwdriver to get the job done. Essentially though the case is pretty tool-less and that's always a big plus. Push button operated drive bays and parts that easily pop on and off add even more appeal to the Cosmos 1000 during the installation process. This case is also a looker that will catch the eye of house guests or friends and will make them green with envy.

Digit-Life Review: Playing HD Content on AMD-based Machines

Posted by Nathan @ 2:21 PM (EDT)

"We've analyzed video playback in modern high-quality resource-intensive formats several times already. Unfortunately, it's usually difficult to apply test results to your own computer, because there's multitude of HD video formats and we might just miss the formats you are interested in. So we decided to conduct several additional tests in order to evaluate real hardware requirements for playing HD video on modern media, such as Blu-ray and HD DVD. These tests, in our opinion, may be interesting and useful to those building rigs with extra capacity for the future needs."

Corsair is First Official Licensee for Intel's DDR3 Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) Specification

Posted by Nathan @ 2:20 PM (EDT)

Fremont, CA, September 14, 2007 – Corsair® http://www.corsair.com, a worldwide leader in high-performance computer and flash memory products, today announced they have been licensed by Intel to use the new Intel Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) certification logo. The certification will apply to the latest DDR3 modules offered by Corsair and specifically programmed with the new Intel XMP specification.

Through a significant partnership effort between system manufactures, motherboard suppliers and memory manufactures, the Intel Extreme Memory Profile specification is part of a complete eco-system architecture designed for the enthusiast PC user. The new XMP specification allows both the novice and the advanced user to easily configure their Intel P35, X38 and future systems for over-clocking performance. With both built in SPD optimized profiles as well as the ability to manually adjust timing parameters, systems can be fine tuned for intense gaming situations or for everyday home computing applications. The full line of Corsair Intel XMP DDR3 modules will be showcased at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), Corsair Booth 343, September 18-20 in San Francisco at the Moscone Center West.

Corsair vs. Super Talent 1800MHz+ RAM @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 2:20 PM (EDT)

"DDR3 memory is now the new big memory standard to come from the JEDEC group. DDR3 memory once again builds on the technology that DDR and DDR2 first laid down. DDR3 is still a parallel architecture rather than the serial nature that RDRAM tried to bring in. Like all of the DDR memory we have seen, the technology is derived from the old SDRAM modules that were so popular back when Socket 7 and Pentium II / III were at their peak.

Today we have some of the highest availably clocked DDR3 memory modules. We have 1800 MHz modules from Corsair and 1866 MHz modules from Super Talent. Today we hope to see just how far we can push them to and who will be king."

DHReview: GMC R2 Toast Case

Posted by Nathan @ 2:19 PM (EDT)

There may be thousands of computer cases on store shelves for sale, but if you think about it only a few are innovative. From a cheap 30$ value case up to a 300$ aluminum tower, the basic concept is more or less the same. It is rare to see a case that differs from the rest not only in size, number of features and appearance, but down to the very basic design. GMC have however designed a chassis very different from the rest which allows the optical drive to be placed facing upwards. This design has many downsides but also has some advantages which can prove to be useful. GMC is the only company who produces such a case at the time being and registered patents worldwide for it as well, so it is unlikely to see another manufacturer copying the design. GMC baptized this case R-2 “Toast”. Let us have a closer look at it.

Just last week I reviewed the Zalman Z-Machine GT1000 Black Mid-Tower ATX Gaming Case, which could easily share relation to the exotic sports cars we can't afford. It was a very nice case, to be sure, but at the end of the day a sports car only has one purpose. Turtle Beach Video Advantage PCI Review @ OCC

"To begin with, I will transfer some video from an older Hi8 video camera that uses the composite cable outputs. So the first thing to do, is to connect the sound and video output of my video camera to the composite sound and video input of the Video Advantage PCI. Other than setting the directory to save my video, I have used the default settings for all the selections to get a good baseline for how the software works. I will tweak the settings as necessary. I would suggest you leave the video settings near the highest settings to get the best possible quality. Be forewarned however, that the best quality will also take up the most room on your hard drive and the steepest hardware requirements."

Gigabyte is well known for their high quality products. They generally market their products to the enthusiast willing to pay a little more for that high quality, but desiring products a little less extreme, a little more on the conservative side. So, my expectations for the Triton 180 are that it will be a well made, high quality case, with attention paid to every detail, but but somewhat conservative. Let's see if it lives up to that.”

One of those surfaces is connected to the faceplate that is currently on. The “MicroGear” button is how you enable the frictionless scrolling capability, which is something I absolutely love. Kingwin Mach 1 ABT-800MA1S 800 Watt Modular Power Supply Review @ Tweaknews.net

Posted by Nathan @ 5:28 AM (EDT)

"Kingwin has a very solid performer here. Modular cabling, near silent running, and solid voltages all make for a winning combination. I liked the attention to detail, which is rare in the PSU market at this price point. The finish is flawless, the modular cabling is solid, without that sloppy feeling plastic connectors can give."

Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 5:26 AM (EDT)

"Most webcams have a round shape and a stand. This one takes a whole different approach so that it is installable on all types of monitors and LCD screens, and is at eye level so you don't have to look down and away from the screen. There is a button on the left hand side to take a quick snap shot without having to run the QuickCam software. The clip is not a normal spring-loaded clip, but rather a manual clip, making it adaptable for any flat display."

Nexus Caterpillar Silent System PC Case Review @ Metku.net

Thermaltake LANBOX Lite Enclosure Review @ Virtual-Hideout

Posted by Nathan @ 5:24 AM (EDT)

“At the beginning of the year I reviewed the Tt LANBOX enclosure. This month I will be going over the Tt LANBOX Lite. The Tt LANBOX Lite is a fully modular system where all the components can be removed from the body of the enclosure for easier installation. There are front panel mesh and side panel openings for increased airflow, and front and rear fans help with the air flow to keep all the components cool. Also, let's not forget to mention that Piano finish that I love so much. So what makes this version "lite" compared to the previous version a few months ago? I guess we will find out all the details in this review.”

Killer NIC Review @ XSReviews

Posted by Nathan @ 5:23 AM (EDT)

"Even though CPU’s are getting more and more powerful, with a large percent left idle, there are more dedicated add-in cards than ever. With physics processing units (PPU’s), GPU’s, it isn’t so strange that there is a NPU (network processing unit). That’s exactly what BigFoot have brought to the table with their Killer NIC which has a fairly hefty price tag, and hopefully performance to warrant the expense."

Matrox TripleHead2Go Digital Edition Review @ OCModshop

Posted by Nathan @ 5:21 AM (EDT)

As the name suggests, the TripleHead2Go Digital Edition improves over their previous model with the replacement of analog VGA to completely digital DVI, both for input and output. This new unit will still take regular VGA as a source, and outputs to three different monitors. To add even more flexibility, you can mix and match monitors however you wish: not all of your monitors have to be digital. Your multi-monitor setup can include 2 analog monitors and a digital LCD panel, a 3-LCD setup, or any other combination. If you can't scrounge together 3 monitors, then don't worry: the unit will also function as a DualHead2Go, and you can add another monitor later.

Revoltec Rhodium Tower Review @ Bjorn3D

PC cases have undergone a huge evolution the last 10-15 years. While at the dawn of the PC era you could only find beige and boring cases, now basically every case looks designed. AMD's Quad-core Opteron 2300 Processors Reviewed @ TR

Posted by Nathan @ 5:19 AM (EDT)

Somewhere around mid-morning this past Friday, a rather large package made its way into the depths of Damage Labs. Inside was a server containing something very special: a pair of AMD's new quad-core Opteron processors. The chip code-named "Barcelona" has been something of an enigma during its development, both because of questions about exactly when it would arrive and how it would perform when it did. After a long, hot weekend of non-stop testing, we have some answers to those questions. AMD is formally introducing its Barcelona-based Opteron 2300-series processors today, so the time is now. As for the performance, well, keep reading to see exactly how the new Opterons compare to Intel's quad-core Xeons.

Antec TruePower Quattro 850W Modular PSU TPQ-850 Review @ Benchmark Reviews

AMD Barcelona Launched - Previewed at HotHardware.com

Posted by Nathan @ 5:56 AM (EDT)

"In a move reminiscent of their campaign from long ago to debunk the "megahertz myth" with processor performance rating-type model numbers, AMD is announcing a new power consumption metric called "ACP" or "Average CPU Power". AMD claims historically that they took a much more conservative approach with providing measurements for traditional TDP (Thermal Design Power) ratings, opting to list worst case, maximum numbers versus Intel's average or "typical" rating guidelines. As a result, AMD's processor architecture, at least on paper, appeared significantly more power hungry than it was in practice."

VidaBox Premium Wireless Keyboard Review @ techPowerUp

Posted by Nathan @ 5:53 AM (EDT)

When building an HTPC system, one of the main problems is finding a decent keyboard and mouse that won't take up too much room. Often a good keyboard is just a standard full sized desktop keyboard in a wireless version. Then there is the issue of cursor control. A mouse often gets misplaced, and remote control units are awkward at best. VidaBox's new Premium Wireless Keyboard features a built-in optical trackball, and the size is as compact as a laptop keyboard.

CoolIT Systems PCI Cooling Booster Review @ OCModshop

Posted by Nathan @ 8:19 PM (EDT)

Most PCI and other expansion cards do not generate alot of heat, and therefore are overlooked when cooling your computer system. Today's multimedia and home theater systems include high performance TV tuners, video capture, and high-performance sound cards that do tend to get quite warm, and could benefit from additional cooling. Even many video cards could use some extra help, as the tiny OEM heatsinks are either underpowered or fail.

Corsair VX450W Review @ techPowerUp

Posted by Nathan @ 8:19 PM (EDT)

Corsair's new VX450W power supply comes with a maximum load of 450W. While this may not sound much it is absolutely sufficient to power most of today's systems. The PSU has a very high efficiency of over 83% which allows the fan to run slower because there is not so much excess heat to get rid of. In our fan noise testing this extremely silent unit leads by a large margin over all other PSUs tested so far.
