"Heatsinks for modern processors are slowly getting bigger and bigger, in fact many are too big to fit in a standard case. There is an obvious limit on the amount of metal that you can strap to your core before limitations creep in (motherboard component conflict, case size, weight etc.). |
Entry level VGA round-up, 7 Geforce 8400GS compared @ Madshrimps |
Posted by Nathan @ 3:54 PM (EDT) |
Home users and budget minded enthusiasts have been getting watered down version of high end hardware for years now, the latest Geforce 8 series recently got the same treatment, with NVIDIA introducing the 8400GS part, this lowly priced VGA card comes HDTV ready (for HTPC usage) and has a GPU with DX10 compatibility. We test 7 offerings from different manufactures and compare them to the low end range from ATI to see which one comes out on top. Read on to find out which card gives you the most bang for the buck! |

"Combat is not only challenging to the point of frustration; it's also mindless. There are no active defensive moves, and no skill involved in wielding a weapon. Since you're always inevitable swarmed by enemies, you're left to click the left mouse button until death or victory. Targeting is never accurate, even with a melee weapon, but it doesn't appear to be typical roll-if-the-dice hitpoint depletion either. The lack of consistency had me stepping away from the game after a few attempts at attacking the same bandit encampment, and I nearly lost a keyboard in anger. To make matters worse, the AI has two settings, one for melee enemies - swarm and swing - and one for archers - shoot and run. You'll spend more time chasing cowardly archers across long distances than actually swinging an axe." |
Kingston HyperX 2GB PC3-11000 DDR3 Dual Channel Memory Kit Review @ Bigbruin.com |

PC3-11000? That's right, PC3-11000, or 1375MHz DDR3. PC3-11000 memory seems to be a creation unique to Kingston, a leader in system memory and flash memory products that has been in business since 1987. What they have done reminds me a bit of Spinal Tap, as my initial thought was that they took a 1333MHz module and turned the dial beyond 10, right up to 11. |

Half Life games are quite possibly amongst the most revered PC titles of the recent years. And how could they not be? Both the original and its sequel pushed forward the boundaries of FPS story-telling, making players experience the story first hand, not through directed cinematics. That was not all they did however! With great AI, graphics engines that were amongst the prettiest of the generation and some of the most memorable scenes in gaming the two defined what PC gaming was all about. As if all of this wasn’t enough, Valve decided to push the boundaries in content delivery as well, bringing forward Steam and inevitably episodic games. HL2 Episode 1 was not amongst the longest games of last year, but it was without doubt one of the best shooters we had the pleasure of playing. Valve are also well known for learning from their mistakes, so let’s see what Episode 2 has in store for us! |

How much can one write about a 2GB Secure Digital Memory Card? It would seem that, for all practical purposes, when you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. However, we’ve learned that not all SD Memory Cards provide the same speed of transfer. So we could assume that it would only be required that we point out which of them is faster than the others. |

Today at Bjorn3D we have the distinct pleasure of reviewing the third card to be included in XFX's Fatal1ty Professional series, the GeForceT 8800 GTS. After the success of its predecessors, this card has some big shoes to fill. XFX claims that this is the fastest 8800 GTS based card currently boasting a 30% improvement over the standard 8800 GTS 320MB card. XFX further states we can expect an astounding 15% increase in speed over all other 8800 GTS versions. The statements by XFX would lend us to believe the performance of this card should be approaching the speed of the standard 8800 GTX card, I guess we'll soon see! |

It’s like a media circus whenever Logitech releases any new input devices. The reputation that Logitech has when it comes to mice and keyboards is second to none. Take a look at the G5, one of the most desired mice around. It had razor fast response and good looks. And when we speak of keyboards, chances are you have heard or even own a G11/G15 keyboard. For an avid gamer this keyboard has all the features necessary to beat any first person shooter, let alone using the macro keys in games . The LCD screen, weapon shortcuts and media controls, this keyboard basically has it all. |

CFI TeraBox II+ USB Multiple HDD Enclosure Review @ Virtual-Hideout |

“It doesn’t get much simpler than this for a 4 slot external enclosure. Slide the drives in, select what mode you want and plug it in and go. With the USB format, the enclosure is portable between systems, anything after Windows 98 doesn’t need drivers and all the drives can be combined into a single drive. CFI Enclosure has put this at a MSRP of $149 and I think it is a good match.” |

"The Razer Diamondback 3G gaming mouse really seemed slender to me, especially the underside of the mouse. It’s got the standard Razer logo printed on the top of it and on the underside you can see the feet that help it glide on surfaces. The sides of the mouse have gripping railings on them and either side also has two customizable buttons. The mouse houses a total of seven buttons, so you’ll be able to customize it quite a bit." |

Titan TTC-G5T Notebook Cooling Pad Speakers Review @ Virtual-Hideout |
Posted by Nathan @ 3:07 PM (EDT) |
“I had high expectations of Titan, especially after the previous G4T turned out to be a decent notebook cooler supporting a wide range of laptops. However, the G5T is less of a notebook cooler, and more just a pair of budget USB speakers. Trying to label this as a notebook cooler seems a bit weird, as it doesn't provide any airflow of its own. Even as a pair of USB speakers, it doesn't provide too much incentive for the end-user.” |

"In case you haven't noticed, something sets this cooler apart from practically every other cooler on the market today. It has its heatpipes exposed which allows them to make direct contact with the CPU. And that is where our next review item steps in. Seasonic, one of the more popular choices amongst Quiet computing enthusiasts today realizes that all newer model power supplies do not need to be huge power packing boxes. So, they recently released the S12II series. This line consists of 330, 380, 430 and 500 watt units. Not only are these low wattage PSUs but they are low noise too. What more would you want in a quiet environment PC? Should one of these units be in your future? Read the article and find out. |

NZXT Precise Power 1200W Modular Power Supply Review @ ThinkComputers.org |

"Although the Pure-Fi is incapable of changing albums or artists, it does support the use of playlist presets. The remote has six buttons (labeled 1-6), that each remember a single playlist. To set, hold one of the six buttons for 1 second. A beep will be followed by the first screen shown. From here you can choose which playlist to program, the first choice being all the songs on your iPod. I created a mix in iTunes that is comprised of tracks from five Coup albums named Coup MIX. If you scroll through the choices you will see the playlist you created. Upon selecting it, the Elite will give you the option to shuffle the playlist. Select 'yes' or 'no' to finish the procedure and the button will now remember the playlist and options when pressed again." |

EVGA has the best warranty in the motherboard business for the A1 series boards and that is hard to beat from any angle. Most of these NVIDIA chipset motherboards are identical in almost every way except cosmetics so actually any 680i motherboard will be basically the same quality. This board Overclocked very well, and with the right Intel CPU and better cooling I am sure much better results could be obtained. The motherboards layout is thought out and works ergonomically in the users favor when building a system, and the onboard on/off buttons are great for overclocking restarts as is the POST ERROR LED,which lets the user know what is having trouble on the system. |

Sometimes CoolerMaster has a hit, and sometimes they have a miss, like any company. The CM690 however is most definitely a hit. They managed to somehow fit everything from a full sized tower into a mid, and not sacrifice anything. Not only are you able to fit 2 8800GTX cards in this, the placement of the fans and the case venting all around helps keep the temperature down. There's even room for a few more fans on the side, front, and even the top if you feel this case isn't staying cool enough. |

"It's hard to be objective when reviewing graphics cards or any computer part for that matter. Sure, the hardware that is tested is done so with objectivity in mind. Set parameters are used and are consistent, which provides objective real data; the numbers don't lie. But everyone has a particular brand they like and/or one they dislike. Some may like PNY, some may not. Personally, I don't like PNY products. I find its products are cheap looking and appeal to those who want cheap rather than quality. Of course, this is just my opinion and is subjective; to each his own. I wonder how the PNY 8800 Ultra Overclocked 768MB PCIe would rate against the competition? People who have purchased Radeon HD 2900 series graphics cards will without doubt be constantly bothered by noise from the cooler, while those who own Nvidia’s 8800 series are far more likely to be happy with their heatsink/fan combination. Still, there are always improvements which can be made to cooling solutions and even if performance remains the same, the addition of an aftermarket cooler can take a reference design card and make it more attractive. Ideal for case modders. |

In this review I'm taking a closer look at the OCZ Vendetta HSF to see how good this heatsink cools. There's no reference on OCZ's website why they called this heatsink Vendetta but I think it could be an homage to "V for Vendetta", a pretty inspiring movie (and also a comic book series) about freedom which was released in 2006. |
