DH Review: Auzentech X-Fi Prelude 7.1 and ASUS Xonar D2

Posted by Nathan @ 3:22 PM (EST)

In the last few years things have been pretty stale with Creative having a clear lead due to their Soundblaster Live! and Audigy cards. It was only recently that things got interesting again, with Creatives new X-Fi line bringing new cards to the table, as well as several other companies proprietary solutions. Today well be looking at Auzens take on an X-Fi soundcard and a 7.1 channel soundcard from ASUS which places special emphasis on Dolby and DTS support.

OCZ ATV Turbo 4 GB @ techPowerUp

OCZ's ATV Turbo 4 GB USB stick comes in a flashy yellow color with a rugged rubber shell. It uses Dual Channel Technology to maximize performance - in our testing 35.0 MB/s. To check if it can take the pressure we ran over it with a car and then fried it. Literally, in a frying pan.

SimpleTech SimpleDrivePS 160 GB Portable HDD Review @ HardwareLogic

Posted by Nathan @ 3:21 PM (EST)

"An image from a high end digital camera can exceed five megabytes. Recorded TV and (legally) stored movies approach 10 gigabytes. Transporting files via email is often not an option because of size or sensitivity of material. Server uploading and downloading is an option, but can be slow – especially if you are wireless. Burning to DVD or CD can work – or it can lead to the “DVD as Still Life” syndrome – where an office is salt-and-peppered with hundreds of unlabeled DVD’s and CD’s. You need a large, portable, rewritable, rugged option."

Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L Review @ OverclockerClub

Posted by Nathan @ 3:19 PM (EST)

"The GA-P31-DS3L acts like both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. As a budget desktop offering, it is the mild mannered Dr. Jekyll. Start playing in the M.I.T. section of the BIOS and Mr. Hyde comes out to play. That can be taken one of two ways, very good or very bad. In this case, it is very good. I was pleasantly surprised to see a budget offering overclocking like some of the better known hardware on the market. I was able to adjust the front side bus up to 465MHz with the default multiplier on the E6750 and stopped at 425x8 with my Q6600 used in this review. In no way was I expecting the overclocking results that I pulled from this board. It was not the best in every benchmarking category, but it was at least comparable to its big brothers' performance when it was not exceeding their results."

EnzoTech Sapphire CPU Water Block Review @ Virtual-Hideout

Posted by Nathan @ 3:18 PM (EST)

“When EnzoTech told us about their newest CPU cooler, it wasn't a big surprise since water cooling is still the most cost efficient and aggressive form of cooling. While phase cooling may be a more extreme form of cooling, it isn't affordable and is really intended for extreme overclockers. Since we're partial to what gives you the best cooling performance per cost, we were honored to receive the EnzoTech Sapphire CPU Water Block. It's EnzoTech's first premiere launch in to the water cooling market. And incidentally, they also released the SNBW-SLI (Northbridge) Water Block which looks to further compliment the CPU cooler since most users who go for that excellent system overclock will also appreciate a well cooled Northbridge chipset. Unfortunately, that wasn't included in the box. None the less, let's take a look at the Sapphire Water Block.”

Synology Disk Station DS-207+ SATA Gigabit NAS @ Benchmark Reviews

Posted by Nathan @ 3:18 PM (EST)

Benchmark Reviews recently had the opportunity to test the Synology Disk Station DS-207+ SATA Gigabit NAS (Network Attached Storage) device. The basic premise behind the NAS box started out as a fairly simple one, allow networked client computers easy access to shared files across the network without the need for a full blown server. While this may sound simple, the NAS boxes of the past have been plagued with horrid performance in the speed department. I should place a heavy emphasis on “past” because recently that has all changed, and the idea of tolerating slow transfer speeds from a NAS box is just not going to fly anymore, especially with the arrival of products like the DS207+. I guess I just spoiled any suspense as to how the DS207+ performs. This is one incredible little box.

DH Review: Cooler Master Cosmos 1000 Case Review

Posted by Nathan @ 10:18 AM (EST)

In my time as a hardware reviewer I have never actually reviewed an enthusiast orientated Cooler Master case; I have used them but never been in the position to take a proper look at one. Thinking back, one of the most impressive would have to be their Wave Master design which looked fantastic, specifically compared to other cases of its time. In addition to this it had a few good features which made using it as the basis for a review system easy. It would also appear that high end Cooler Master cases are well made because one of my friends still uses his Wave Master, 4 years after it was originally launched, and it is still in perfect condition.

The VIZO Master Panel II Expansion Interface is a multifunctional controller panel; an updated version to Vizo's original Master Panel, that brings added provisions and features to where their needed...Up front. Here at Benchmark Reviews we are very familiar with the ongoing revolution in portable media. Wheather its uploading play-lists for an MP3 player or the day's pictures from a digital camera; everyone wants a convenient way to manage their data without having to fumble around the back of their cases. This popular demand has even driven manufacturers to add the most basic I/O ports to the front of PCs. However, with there being so many proprietary media standards, a convenient and centralized solution is still missing from many if not all case designs, leaving consumers looking to after market solutions for their needs.

The 6030Plus is an all black enclosure with a large side panel intake fan. How large of a fan you ask? How about 360mm big. "OCZ Reaper HPC Edition PC2-9200 2GB DDR2-1150 set of memory was around the middle of the pack in the enthusiast memory market. I say this because the Mushkin XP2-9200 set performed slightly better overall. The OCZ Reaper set performed better than the Crucial Ballistix Tracer in almost every benchmark and the Crucial was stock at DDR2-1066 so that set is clearly at the bottom of the pack. I didn’t have any issues with the OCZ Reaper memory except that the unique heat pipe that is on top of the stick almost makes contact with my CPU cooler. DH Review: Swiftech H2O-120 Compact Watercooling Kit

Posted by Nathan @ 4:22 AM (EST)

The first watercooling kits found their way onto the market back in the Pentium 3 days; an era when 120mm fans and heatpipe air cooling designs were within the realms of fantasy. While watercooling systems have certainly evolved over the last few years, their relatively low demand ensured that they couldnt evolve at the explosive rate air coolers have. The weakest points of the watercooling systems were always the high price, the difficulty of installation and the size of the kits. Swiftech, one of the most established PC watercooling manufacturers have released a new kit, the H2O-120, designed to counter these three major watercooling drawbacks. Will that be enough to compete against the high end air coolers available today? We will find out shortly.

A.C. Ryan AluBox eSATA @ Bjorn3D

Posted by Nathan @ 4:20 AM (EST)

I recently reviewed the A.C. Ryan AluBox Duo LAN, an interesting NDAS external enclosure that could house up to 2 hard drives and even RAID them together with more AluBox LAN enclosures. Not everyone needs such a beast so today I am taking a look at a slightly more conventional external hard drive enclosure, the AluBox eSATA enclosure that allows you to insert a SATA or an IDE-drive and then hook the drive up to the computer over USB2.0 or eSATA.

Mushkin HP2-8500 2GB Memory Kit Review @ Hardwarelogic

Posted by Nathan @ 4:20 AM (EST)

"Although I've heard that Denver is an awesome place, there are very few things associated with Denver that I like. I hate the Denver Broncos (I'm a Steelers fan), I hate Coors beer, and the Colorado Rockies really let me down: now I have to hear all about the Red Sox until next April. Now that I've been completely honest about my anti-Denver opinion, let me introduce you to Mushkin, the enthusiast memory maker based in... you guessed it, Denver, CO."

In Win BK623 Mt. Jade Desktop Media Case Review @ Tweaknews.net

Posted by Nathan @ 5:13 AM (EST)

"So what did I think of the Mountain Jade? Aside from some minor problems, I found the case to be easy to build, with solid construction throughout. While certainly not very expandable, it should be a decent performer for a multimedia PC or HTPC. The lack of fans initially left me a little leery of performance, but testing set me straight."

ASUS Commando Motherboard Review @ ThinkComputers.org

Posted by Nathan @ 5:10 AM (EST)

“ASUS launched it Republic of Gamers line of motherboards a while ago with the initial offerings of the Striker Extreme and Crosshair motherboards. While these motherboards did have a lot of features they were a bit lacking. Their third offering the Commando is based on the Intel P965 chipset, which is known to be highly overclockable. The Commando features the P956 as well as the LCD poster, onboard switches, support for 45nm processors and the SupremeFX audio card. With all these features it sure seems like ASUS has gone in the right direction with the Commando. Read on to see what the Commando has in store for us!”

Sigma Shark 635 Watt ATX Power Supply Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 5:09 AM (EST)

"Now that it is all set up and plugged in, insert the main power plug into the back of the PSU and the wall, turn on the switch and start the computer. Sit back and enjoy the work you have just accomplished. Here you can see the nice blue glow that the power supply gives off in my system. I love how it is just the right amount of light, not too dim and not bright. Perfect to accentuate the internals of the system."

Zalman VF-1000LED Graphics Card Cooler Review @ OCIA.net

Posted by Nathan @ 5:08 AM (EST)

"Once again, Zalman has created an excellent product that does exactly what it is supposed to do and more. The VF-1000LED is a video card cooler that provides excellent cooling in silence. It is quite beautiful, if you like copper, with its large expanse of fins and heatpipes. At fan levels low enough to be inaudible, it dropped my load temps more than 30C under the stock cooler."

SteelSound 4H Headset Review @ DVHardware

Posted by Nathan @ 5:07 AM (EST)

Besides mousepads SteelSeries also has lots of other products for gamers. In this review I'm taking a look at the SteelSound 4H headset which has been optimized for gamers. SteelSeries claims the 4H is ideal for FPS and RTS gamers because of optimizations for specific sounds found in gaming like gunfire, weapon reloads, footsteps and other crucial in-game sounds. The SteelSeries 4H headset is a cheaper version of the SteelSound 5H v2. The 4H has many of the same features but has a slightly less advanced design and can't be dismantled into three separate pieces.

PC Apex Review // Zalman CNPS8000 CPU & VF900-Cu GPU Cooler

Posted by Nathan @ 5:07 AM (EST)

Installation was child's play, at least for my socket 939 CPU. You simply interlock the mounting clip pieces around the base plate and clip the heat sink onto the stock motherboard retention frame. You do need to check the clearance on your motherboard capacitors and any heat sinks sprinkled around the motherboard. On the DFI LanParty UT nF4 Ultra-D, one of the heat pipes barely cleared a mosfet heat sink. Low profile coolers do have their drawbacks, and the CNPS8000 is no exception. Users with Intel CPUs must replace the retention frame.

Zalman CNPS7500-Cu & CNPS8700 CPU Coolers Review @ Virtual-Hideout

Posted by Nathan @ 6:14 PM (EST)

“The CNPS8700 LED, which was introduced at CeBIT 2007 in Hanover, Germany, is an all copper heatpipe and heatsink CPU cooler with a lower profile and larger, 110 mm fan as compared to the CNPS7000. The CNPS7500-Cu offers improved performance over the CNPS7700. It is also made of 100% copper and has an 110 mm silent fan just like the CNPS8700. Both coolers sport the Flower Heatsink Design, which is comprised of a plethora of copper fins atop a copper base, with a clear fan with LED lights set in the center of the fins. The only major difference between the two is that the CNPS8700 LED also has heatpipes incorporated into the design. Which one cools better? Are they as quiet as Zalman claims? These thought-provoking questions are just what this review will attempt to answer.”

Guide: Sharing cellphone broadband @ GideonTech.com

Posted by Nathan @ 6:12 PM (EST)

"Many of you have probably seen commercials lately pushing heavily for mobile broadband. It's all the rage for road warriors who need to get high speed internet access while out in the field with their laptops. In past years, many have found ways to tether their smartphones to their laptops to get access. Although this is a great way to get mobile broadband, some providers have been known to shut down accounts doing this. Things have progressed quite far ahead lately where laptop EVDO and EDGE PCMCIA and USB cards are affordable to the masses.

High speed wireless cards are great but with one downfall --it's a one user device. Or is it? In a recent trip outdoors, I was scratching my head trying to find a way to bring broadband access to 20+ people. I had one Verizon Wireless laptop USB card and a basic 802.11g wifi router. After tinkering around for an hour or two, I found a way to share that single cellphone connection amongst everyone."

Presently, they make Tuniq branded cases, power supplies, CPU coolers, hard drive silencer/coolers, and thermal compound.”
