Digit-Life Review: Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B, Infinity, and Andy Samurai Master Coolers

Posted by Nathan @ 1:35 AM (EDT)

"Although relatively new to the market, Scythe, which first began its United States business operations in 2004, has already introduced a number of products that have been quite popular among PC enthusiasts. The secret to Scythe's success is a pretty simple formula; offer a product with a simple design that offers solid performance. Although many of Scythe's product aren't as flashy as other manufacturers, its high-class coolers are able to compete with leading products from Cooler Master, Thermaltake, and Zalman. Today we are taking a looking three top model from Scythe: the Ninja Plus Rev.B, the Infinity, and the Andy Samurai Master."

Western Digital WD7500AAKS 750GB HD @ HotHardware.com

“We aren't sure why Western Digital waited so long to offer a drive bigger than 500GB, but we are happy to see the competition heating up. Plus, with storage prices so low right now, Western Digital's move seems rather smart. The company can offer its flagship drive (in terms of capacity) at a very attractive price. The MSRP for the new 750GB WD Caviar SE16 is only $249.99, which is roughly $0.33/GB.”

How To Make a Budget Desktop Computer on the Cheap @ PCSTATS.com

Once you have a general idea on those two fronts, the next decision is whether to get a PC that suits you from a large vendor like Dell, a local computer store or even try building it yourself. All three are valid routes, but if you are technically inclined, building a computer from scratch is a fun way to ensure you get exactly what you want.

PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad CrossFire Edition Review @ HardOCP

Posted by Nathan @ 1:30 AM (EDT)

"After the last PC Power & Cooling product we reviewed we were concerned that PC Power & Cooling may have fallen from grace but while the Turbo-Cool line has stagnated the Silencer line has come into its own. The Silencer 750 Quad combines very good performance, and transient response, with amazing DC output quality and packages all of it in a unit that is uncharacteristically good looking for a PC Power & Cooling product. In the end the PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750 Quad CrossFire may not be an unbeatable value at $199.99 but it is probably the closest thing to it in the consumer market."

MSI P6N-Diamond Review @ XSReviews

"In the past Nvidia have produced some of the best enthusiast chipsets around, most notably perhaps their nForce 4 for the old AMD 939 systems. Still, times have changed now and for quite a while Intel's 965P and 975P based motherboards was the way to go with LGA 775 systems. However, in recent times Nvidia have clawed their way back in with their feature packed 680i boards and we have finally got our hands on one. The MSI P6N-Diamond which priomises great overclocking, a chock load of features and excellent cooling to boot, let's see if this all rings true."

Thrustmaster Dual Trigger 3-in-1 Rumble Force Gamepad @ Benchmark Reviews

Posted by Nathan @ 1:28 AM (EDT)

The game controller in your hand can make all the difference, sometimes between liking a game, and loving it, or just for getting the game to do what you intend. Is the controller designed well? Does it slip in your hands? Is it built well? Does it allow customizing of its buttons? Some controllers offer features others don't. Scheduled to be released in September 2007, just in time for the holidays, the Thrustmaster Dual Trigger 3 in 1 Controllers represent their latest with six axis of movement. Benchmark Reviews offers an early review of the 'Rumble Force' version. Antec SpotCool Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 1:27 AM (EDT)

"The fan apparatus itself seems sturdy and is about 8.5 inches long. This is long enough for the fan to reach most places in the case, but short enough to not be a nuisance in most cases. The fan is 70mm, which should provide a decent amount of airflow over any component at a fairly reasonable noise level. The fan also has 3 blue LEDs which light up when the fan is on. There is no option of turning these off, however, which might be annoying to some users. On the outside of the fan casing, a three value selector is located, allowing the user to pick from high, medium, and low settings. Finally, the 3 pin connector is 8 inches long from the side of the fan casing."

Zalman ZM-DS4F Dual Stereo Headphones Review @ Tweaktown

"Zalman might not be your first port of call when it comes to gaming headphones, and the ZM-RS6F which the company launched a few years ago isn’t the greatest looking pair of headphones around. However, the good news is that Zalman are about to launch two new headphones, and today we’re looking at the ZM-DS4F."

Kingwin Mach 1 ABT-800MA1S 800W Power Supply Review @ Bigbruin.com

Posted by Nathan @ 1:30 AM (EDT)

Kingwin is one manufacturer that recognizes that performance is important, but individuality is high on the list of desired features with many computer enthusiasts. Most of the products they manufacture are very eye-catching, and this is an understatement when looking at their new Mach 1 800W Power Supply, model number ABT-800MA1S. This unit is rated for 800W continuous output, has rather unique modular cables, and has many blue lights throughout.

Kingwin 800 watt Mach 1 PSU Review @ OCCafe

Posted by Nathan @ 1:30 AM (EDT)

Aside from clean stable power, which is the core issue of any power supply, Kingwin also delivers a quiet unit. The soft hum of the Mach 1 immediately disappears if your ear moves more than a foot away. I went so far as to blow a hair dryer on the unit to artificially get the fan's sensor to speed the fan up and still got quiet operation. Very impressive.

ASUS EN8600GTS Silent Videocard Review @ Elite Bastards

Posted by Nathan @ 1:27 AM (EDT)

"Atop the GPU core, and also covering the board's memory, is a hefty heatsink, which draws heat away from the GPU via two heat pipes. This is coupled with a third heat pipe , which is linked to an even larger heatsink positioned away from the graphics board. This takes its cue from the EN7900GT TOP part we mentioned earlier, as this larger heatsink can be rotated through ninety degrees to pull it away from the graphics card itself - This should then sit above the CPU cooler, so that the air pushed up from that cooler helps to cool this heatsink, and thus the graphics card itself. Of course, this will cause a problem for users of certain third-party CPU coolers, which either take up the space that this cooler would occupy, or remove hot air elsewhere. Users looking to build an entirely passively cooled system may also struggle, as without some form of active cooling to help dissipate heat from that heatsink temperatures can rise unacceptably very quickly. Thus, you are left with some trade-offs and points to consider if you're interested in picking up a silent graphics board of this performance level."

YouGamers Latest Content: Transformers (PC) Review

"If any part of the game can be considered broken, it's vehicle combat. Transforming into a sports car seems like a great idea, but the driving model has no consistency. Steering with a keyboard is next to impossible, making timed racing missions frustrating. There's no AI to speak of, and human police vehicles are always smashing into your car from all directions. That's not really a problem, though, because the very basic physics modeling has no basis in rational thought. You'll bounce through a half-dozen cars without so much as slowing down, though your vehicle's direction will change randomly. Damage modeling?
No worries - there's none to be found; you'll bounce off objects with impunity from Newtonian forces. Driving missions left me cursing the game in anger."

Lian Li PC-A01 Review @ XSReviews

Posted by Nathan @ 3:59 PM (EDT)

"Lian Li are the proud makers of standard aluminium cases which is proven by their PC-B20 and other such enclosures. But today I have something new from the case makers, a media PC enclosure. Called the PC-A01 it features a single 5.25” bay and ‘magic space’ for a large graphics card. Hopefully it’ll satisfy the HTPC crowd…"

Super Talent Mega-Plus MP3 Player Review @ The TechZone

Posted by Nathan @ 3:58 PM (EDT)

The TechZone has posted a review of the Super Talent Mega-Plus MP3 Player. You may not have heard of Super Talent Technology prior to this review and sadly, their Mega-Plus MP3 player is quite forgettable, despite its iPod nano-like appearance. Whether they own up to the fact or not, it's obvious that the physical design of the Mega-Plus was "inspired" by the first generation nano. The front face is a very glossy white, whereas the backside is a super shiny chrome. Also like the iPod, the headphone jack is at the bottom of the player rather than at the top.

Logitech Harmony 1000 Universal Remote and Wireless Extender Review @ Bigbruin.com

Posted by Nathan @ 3:57 PM (EDT)

At over $400 for the kit as reviewed, this is obviously quite a bit of money for a universal remote control, but the features, capabilities, and absolute simple operation may make it worth it to many people. Don't think of just your enjoyment, but consider the peace you will be buying by eliminating all the times you have to stop what you are doing to go put on a video tape for the kids or an exercise DVD for the wife, simply because they can't figure out the remotes! In my mind, that would be worth the investment.

ECS G33T-M2 Motherboard Review @ HardwareLogic

Posted by Nathan @ 3:57 PM (EDT)

"The G33 Express chipset is in no danger of being confused with INTEL's P35 or X38 chipsets when it comes to all out performance, but its features certainly aren't lacking. These include, among other things, INTEL's GMA3100 integrated graphics, which includes INTEL's "Clear Video Technology", HDMI support, and HD Audio, making it a good base for your next HTPC project. Today, HL puts ECS' G33T M2M-ATX board through its paces, and tells you whether its worth considering for your next HTPC project."

Diamond's Radeon HD 2900 XT 1GB Graphics Card Review @ TR

Posted by Nathan @ 3:56 PM (EDT)

IF YOU'VE BEEN PAYING attention, you probably already know that AMD elected not to reach for the overall graphics performance crown when it introduced its new generation of Radeons, including the flagship Radeon HD 2900 XT. Instead, the company chose to target the $399 mark, where the 2900 XT would compete against the GeForce 8800 GTS. This was a surprising move, indeed--practically without precedent in the modern GPU race.

AMD did it for solid reasons, of course, including the fact that its new graphics processor wasn't quite up to the task of taking on the GeForce 8800 GTX head to head. That makes the product we're reviewing today all the more interesting, because it's a souped-up version of the Radeon HD 2900 XT with a full gig of screaming fast GDDR4 memory. AMD has practically kept mum on this product, choosing not to point out its existence or highlight it in any way. But Diamond and a handful of other AMD partners have been shipping the cards to PC makers for a few weeks now, and contrary to the initial plan, cards are quietly beginning to show up at online retailers, as well.

Akasa AK975cu & AK965 775 Coolers Reviewed @ XtremeComputing

Posted by Nathan @ 3:55 PM (EDT)

"The cooler has two heat-pipes which feed into the heatsink fins at the top. What is unusual for a cooler with heat-pipes is that the heatsink also makes contact with the base copper plate. I suspect that the connected heat-sink gives it slightly better cooling capabilities than if it was suspended with only the two heat-pipes ."

Thermaltake MaxOrb CPU Cooler Review @ Virtual-Hideout

Posted by Nathan @ 3:55 PM (EDT)

"The Thermaltake MaxOrb performed well and is right in-line with other coolers of its type - and this is with warm ambient temperatures. The speed control functioned smoothly and when on high speed, the noise from the fan was barely noticeable. The LED's cast a nice blue glow which highlights the fins without being overpowering."

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 Review @ Gamepyre

Posted by Nathan @ 3:53 PM (EDT)

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 is a pretty good game if you’re a fan of shooters that require a bit more thought than just ‘run and gun’. The focus here was on realism, and it was done well. Remember, if you go running in without checking the tactical map, or at least a quick glance, expect to die before you know what hit you. This game is about patience and tactics, not who has the most ammo.

HANNS-G HW223D 22" LCD Review @ Motherboards.org

Posted by Nathan @ 3:53 PM (EDT)

After a while of sticking my nose in this thing I found I was very satisfied to include this monitor in my test labs as the staple monitor for motherboard and single card VGA testing. The monitor's controls are easy to reach and use, being located directly in the front right side of the monitor screen for ergonomic access. Games, movies and general web browsing all looked excellent on the HANNS-G HW-223DPB. One thing that certainly cannot be beat is the low price tag associated with this monitor as almost anyone who can afford a PC can afford this monitor.

San Jose, California - July 30, 2007 -- Super Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of DRAM memory modules and flash storage solutions, today announced the world's fastest production DDR3 kit. W1866UX2G8 is a 2GB Kit that is tested and guaranteed to operate at 1866MHz (PC3-14900) at extremely low latencies.

The W1866UX2G8 Kit, the world's first 1866MHz 2GB Kit (2x 1GB), supports ultra low 8-8-8-24 latencies. This Kit is built with the fastest available, carefully screened DRAM chips, and is hand tested as a matched pair on a dual channel Asus P5K3 Deluxe motherboard at its rated specs at 1.9 volts.

Super Talent Marketing Director, Joe James commented, "We're applying vast engineering resources to drive DDR3 performance to higher levels. This product follows on the heels of Super Talent's very popular DDR3-1600 CL7 kit. Mr. James added, "Our DDR3 strategy is to be first to market with industry standard speed grades - 1333, 1600, and 1866 - and to optimize performance by supporting the lowest possible latencies".

ASUS Blitz Extreme & Formula Motherboards Review @ Techgage

There are numerous P35 boards available, so what does a company have to do to have an edge? Well, as far as ASUS is concerned, they should produce feature-packed boards that also come with many extras, including a game and 3D Mark 06. Oh... not to mention a water-cooled northbridge!

Cirago 10GB External HDD Review @ OCIA.net

Posted by Nathan @ 4:43 PM (EDT)

"There are a variety of ways to carry data with you. You could buy a notebook computer and schlep it with you everywhere. That can be helpful if you need processing power or internet access on the move. Not everyone, however, has the extra cash for another computer, or the shoulder muscle to tote around a heavy laptop. On the other end of the spectrum are USB keys. Small enough to fit on your key chain, but getting huge in capacity, these little gadgets can be the perfect addition to your mobile office. Flash drives cater to almost every need, from storage capacity of up to 16GB to bullet-proof encasement (I wish I were kidding)."

Kingwin Gladiator Hybrid Cooler Review @ OC Cafe

Posted by Nathan @ 4:42 PM (EDT)

Kingwin's first product released with their hybrid cooling system looks to be a success. The best of both worlds blended in a well performing, well designed product priced at $50. The only drawback worth mentioning was the sound level. The volume of the 100mm fan on the Gladiator was indeed very low but could be faintly detected outside the case. I want to emphasis 'faint' as the fan noise is undecernable at anything over four feet away from the case.

Gigabyte P965-DS3 Motherboard Overclocking Review @ Madshrimps

MSI NX8600GTS HD OC 265MB Videocard @ PC Freaks & Geeks

Posted by Nathan @ 4:40 PM (EDT)

Recently PC Freaks & Geeks had the opportunity to take the Gainward 8800GTX 768MB GPU for a test drive in a review machine. While it offered un disputed performance and it's appearance was certainly scary, due to it's associated price tag, to a certain extent it eliminated all those people looking for high performance graphics on a tight budget Today PC Freaks & Geeks are going to be getting up close and personal with MSI's offering of a mid ranged GPU: the MSI 8600GTS 256MB HD-OC. To make things interesting, and because we like to mix things up here at PC Freaks & Geeks, we will be road testing the MSI 8600GTS against one of it's competitors: the Gainward 8600GTS 512MB.

The Xigmatek HDT-S963 CPU cooler has shown to be able to hold its own in the cooling area. With the added deflector we seen an improvement of cooling for the surrounding CPU components. The fan is mounted via rubber mounts, which will isolate vibrations and reduce noise generated by the unit.
