Beginners Guides: Annual PC Checkup Checklist @ PCSTATS

Posted by Nathan @ 4:56 PM (EDT)

"There comes a time in every once-new computer's life when it just doesn't feel fresh anymore. You know, when it's taking 5-10 minutes to boot up into Windows, the fans are making funny squealing noises, and there's a wad of orange cat hair protruding from the rear fan grille. It's the computer equivalent of senility, your once precious box has lost its edge.Time for action. Let's take a quick look at some of the most common hardware and software problems related to constant use, and find some quick solutions."

Digit-Life: First Look At DDR3

Thermaltake iXoft Notebook Cooler Review @ Hardware Secrets

Posted by Nathan @ 4:54 PM (EDT)

"Weight is a major concern for those who buy a laptop. Since it's supposed to be carried around, it has to be as lightweight as possible. Most people don't realize however that heat is also an issue. Notebooks have a tendency to get really hot during prolonged usage. There are several cooling solutions on the market, most of them USB-powered fan units that are both heavy and noisy. iXoft, a new product from Thermaltake, is neither, relying on simple chemistry to cool a laptop and prevent the user from feeling its heat."

YouGamers Latest Content: Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix (PC) Preview

Posted by Nathan @ 4:54 PM (EDT)

"Order of the Phoenix is graphically capable. The soft shadows and world lighting add to the atmosphere, and each spell has a unique effect. Odd, though, was the dearth of resolution options. Aside from the lowly 640x480, common PC resolutions such as 1024x768 and 1280x1024 are omitted. In their place are four common widescreen HDTV resolutions such as 1280x768. Can't the PC get a little love with an Xbox 360-to-PC port?"

DH Review: Corsair Survivor GT 8GB Flash Drive

Posted by Nathan @ 4:52 PM (EDT)

USB flash drives are a wonderful invention, they are extremely small and lightweight, reliable, fast and they require very little power. The icing on the cake is if you have a USB capable computer (and who doesn't in 2007?) you can use them for portable storage. It is not all positive however, flash drives have tiny plastic bodies, which tend to make them very weak and they are easily lost. Enter Corsair, who have taken a very different approach to his storage medium recently, they have designed a drive which is extremely durable to physical damage - in fact Corsair claim it is almost indestructible. In making this drive so they have made the drive somewhat larger, which in theory should mean it will also be harder to lose.

Infernal PC Game Review @ Gamepyre

Posted by Nathan @ 4:52 PM (EDT)

This game can be run just fine on a mid range system, but you'd miss out on the graphics. Unfortunately, the graphics are a bulk of what this game has going for it. This game looks every bit as good as games like Rainbow Six Vegas, but that’s just to trick you. Past the pretty wrapper you find out what this game really is, and that is just an incredibly repetitive shooter with a pretty lame gimmick. Don't get me wrong, the ability to take people’s souls into yourself to gain your evil power is pretty cool, but being forced to do it to a room of fallen enemies can get boring as hell. I really wanted to enjoy this title going into it, and I tried very hard to, but for someone like me, graphics do not make the game. I need a game with a solid gameplay concept, and usually a good story to go along with it.

Cooljag 92-Cu Intel/AMD Heatpipe CPU Cooler Review @ Tweaknews.net

Posted by Nathan @ 5:20 AM (EDT)

"With the Falcon 92-Cu, Cooljag could have had a solid performer if the temps would have been a bit lower that the aluminum version. This cooler easily outperforms the stocker and does so in a very quiet, unassuming manner, but it's not appreciably better than the Falcon 92-Al. Then, of course there's the mounting system failure issue. This is disappointing and inexcusable. The installation inconvenience can be glossed over, owing to the fact that most users install a cooler only once."

BFR Review: Logitech Skype Cordless Internet Handset

Posted by Nathan @ 5:16 AM (EDT)

Skype has been on the offensive lately, offering itself as a cheap alternative to a traditional landline. Unlike GoogleTalk, or other chat programs, Skype has the ability to make calls to landlines and vice versa (SkypeOut and SkypeIn respectively). Although these services charge, the cost for a full year is about the same as 1 month's cell phone bill. As its popularity has increased, so has third party support, with companies like Logitech producing Skype handsets and wireless phones.

Weighing the value of today's processors at TR

Posted by Nathan @ 5:15 AM (EDT)

PROCESSOR REVIEWS TEND TO FOCUS on performance, and rightly so. We all want to see how well the latest silicon plays games, encodes media files, renders scenes, and performs various other tasks. But performance isn't the only metric that's important for CPUs. For instance, power consumption and energy efficiency are also an important piece of the puzzle, as is the actual cost of the chip. We've considered all of these things in our CPU reviews for years, but we've never before set out to quantify the value proposition--to show exactly how much bang you'll get from dropping your hard-earned bucks on a particular CPU.

Part of the reason we've avoided doing so is that, let's face it, it has the potential to be kind of cheesy. There's much more to a CPU's value proposition than a cold cost-benefit analysis can capture, and in truth, doing such an analysis well can prove rather tricky. That's why you should read our CPU reviews and our system building guides to see what they recommend.

Colin McRae's Dirt Reviewed @ OCModShop

Posted by Nathan @ 5:15 AM (EDT)

Before you even start a race, you know this isn't any ordinary game. The opening select menus are full-on 3d resembling the interface from "Minority Report" or "The Matrix". In addition to being virtually whiplashed between the menu options, you are also presented with your current race stats (which can be almost as painful as the multiple crashes you'll witness). US Pro-racer and X-games gold medallist Travis Pastrana also provides driving tips while the game continues to load.

This is a good time to make sure you have a friend with you, because once the race starts, you'll need him to pick your jaw up off the floor. Dirt's graphics are extremely realistic and eye-poppingly, jaw-droppingly, smack yo' mamma good. The game features lush trackside vegetation, realistic reflections (which dull as your car gets dusty) and realistic landscapes. The car models are stunningly detailed, including the interior views, which actually change and crumple to reflect the car's damage, and probably the best I've ever seen.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler Review @ Elite Bastards

Posted by Nathan @ 5:14 AM (EDT)

"The front of the cooler is dominated by the 92mm fan which clips onto the part. The motor for this fan contains a PWM chip, which is used in conjunction with the four-pin connector to the motherboard to regulate fan speed, which can be set anywhere between 900 and 2,500 RPM. In the meantime, the holder for the fan has been designed to keep noise to a minimum by preventing any 'buzzing' sounds from the fan. Subjectively, this seemed to work reasonably well, with only the very quiet sound of the fan spinning noticeable to my ears during operation.

At the rear, we can see that behind this fan sits forty-two fins, giving a large surface area for heat to be transferred away from the CPU itself to, from where the fan can cool and dissipate that heat."

Lost Planet Extreme Condition PC Review @ GamePyre

Posted by Nathan @ 5:13 AM (EDT)

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition for the PC is most definitely worth a look, even if you've already played the Xbox360 version. Capcom chose the right game to port over to DirectX10 to get the DX10 games rolling, and chose one that will hopefully keep gamers going until the next DX10 games release here in the next few months. This is leaps and bounds better than the Halo 2 port that requires Windows Vista, but doesn't even take advantage of DX10 at all. The demo is available on Steam and many other places on the internet, but I don't feel it really does the game justice. For the $40 price tag, this game is probably the best value for your money you’re going to get as a shooter fan. Sure, this game isn't realistic like other shooters, but does every game now have to try to obey the exact laws of physics or reality in order to be fun?

Nexus Morpho Premium Aluminum Case Review @ Tweaknews.net

Posted by Nathan @ 3:57 AM (EDT)

"The design team that created this case did an amazing job at making it look good. The cooling in the case would be more than adequate if a blowhole and side panel fans had been included. The all aluminum finish really does stand out but its not enough to warrant the price tag. At an expected price of close to 300 Euro this case could use a lot of work before I would even consider recommending it. No one will want to spend this much on a case only to have to purchase fans and cut a blowhole in it so its safe to use."

ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT, 2600 Pro, and 2400 XT @ HotHardware.com

At the time of the HD 2900 XT's debut, AMD disclosed a multitude of details regarding mobile and mainstream GPUs derived from the R600 architecture. In our coverage of the Radeon HD 2000 series as it became known, we talked about not only the Radeon HD 2900 XT, but five other members of the family, including the Radeon HD 2600 XT (GDDR3 and GDDR4 versions), the 2600 Pro, and the Radeon HD 2400 XT and Pro. Unfortunately, cards weren’t ready in time to launch alongside the 2900 XT, but they are now and we’ve got a trio of them in house for a benchmarking throw-down.

ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Review @ techPowerUp

The HD 2600 XT is AMD's new midrange flagship card which is based on the RV630 GPU. This is the first time that a midrange card comes equipped with GDDR4 memory - 256 MB in our case. AMD's new card comes with features such as DirectX 10 support and full HD video acceleration by dedicated hardware called UVD. But is this enough to beat NVIDIA's new products?

Just a few short years ago 1 gigabyte was considered a large hard drive. My, how times have changed. Now anything less than a couple hundred gigabytes of storage is not considered to be a large amount of storage. Microsoft Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 Review @ OCModShop

Posted by Nathan @ 3:51 AM (EDT)

This mouse is designed to pair well with Microsoft's Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000, which is one of the most comfortable keyboards I've ever used. The Natural 6000 mouse has an unusual rounded shape, resembling a softball. There have been other "extremely ergonomic" mice before, but were so strange-looking (no matter how well they performed) that they remain a niche item for ergonomic extremists.

The wireless interface is the same 27MHz technology Microsoft has been using for years on their wireless mice. This technology has been improved over the past several years to reduce lag to the point that it is just as good as a wired mouse (when first introduced it was horribly laggy). The wireless receiver (which also ironically looks like a mouse) plugs directly into your PC's USB port, and has a range of about six feet. Although the low frequency is more prone to interferance and range issues, it should also, in theory, increase battery life.

I gave it an easy Editors Choice award back then and I have pretty much been using that kit in my personal rig until a new package from Crucial arrived recently; the PC2-8500 Ballistix Tracer Kit! Same bling, higher speeds. Other than the higher stock speed rating, there is absolutely no difference from the PC2-6400 kit I already reviewed. ASUS P5K Deluxe WiFi-AP Edition Mobo Review @ HardOCP

"Overall, ASUS is becoming hard to beat when it comes to enthusiast motherboards. Building a system current with this chipset and motherboard combination poses questions bigger than just, "Is this a good motherboard?" You need to be sure of your upgrade path over the next year and be sure of where you are at currently. It will likely be Q208 before we see affordable DDR3 modules make it into etail, so keep that in mind when you are making a new build decision. DH Review: ZEROtherm GX815 VGA Cooler

Posted by Nathan @ 3:49 AM (EDT)

Hardcore overclockers and gamers do not only have to worry about the temperature of their CPU, but also the temperature of their video cards. Overclocking a video card usually has a much larger impact on game frame rates than overclocking a processor. That said, there is also another point of view when it comes to gaming and has nothing to do with overclocking, many people like to enjoy some casual gaming with their HTPC, or simply in a quiet environment. Buying a high end video card usually leaves these people frustrated, as the “reference” coolers generate a lot of noise in order to keep them cool enough. So aftermarket VGA coolers easily come into mind. Today we will take a look at a VGA cooler from a Korean company, Zerotherm, the GX815. The GX815 boasts not only exceptional performance but low noise as well. Too good to be true? We will soon find out.

Digital cameras today have attained such a high optical quality, you wonder how much better they can get. Today, you can get a 1.3 megapixel camera for $19.95. Or, you can pay well over 2 grand for a professional model 12 megapixel Nikon or Canon single lens reflex (SLR), and that's the body only, add another $500-$1500 for a nice lens. Somewhere in that field, there is a price range for the average person wanting a decent camera. I feel that most people will end up paying somewhere between $125 and $250 for a digital camera.”

Hiper HPU-4M730-SS Type M 730W PSU @ Benchmark Reviews

The new generation of power supplies has begun to amp up the competition for placement in your computer case. Antec’s EarthWatts series was among the first to cause a stir in the PSU industry by emphasizing efficient power delivery over the multi-rail hype. But now 80% or better efficiency is very common. A perfect example of combining high-power wattage, effiency, and good looks can be found in the Hiper HPU-4M730-SS Type M 730W PSU. The four +12V rails offer regulated power distribution, but they also deliver at least 80% of the power that they promise, which will result in a more efficient system. QNAP QBack-25 HDD Enclosure Review @ techPowerUp

Posted by Nathan @ 3:42 AM (EDT)

The QNAP QBack-25 is an external HDD enclosure for 2.5" HDDs connected via USB. The use of 2.5" drives allows that it is powered by USB only. What makes the unit special is the included backup software which can easily compete with professional solutions. It is very easy to use and has a clean screen layout. Optional 256-bit AES encryption helps you protect your data from prying eyes. With a price of about $35 this unit is also very competitively priced.

DDR-3 Gaming Performance Analysis @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 3:41 AM (EDT)

"DDR-3 makes the decision even harder as it carries an extreme cost at the moment but do those dollars actually translate into extreme gaming performance? Technically speaking, in pure megabytes per second, it is fast, thanks to the attainable speeds 1500MHz double data rate and beyond which can be achieved, without too much effort. However, the big issue with DDR-3 memory right now is the fact that its latency is high, much higher comparatively to more finely tuned DDR-2.

What does this all really mean for the gamer, though? Are we going to be pushing an extra 1FPS? Maybe 10? It all remains to be seen."

Auzentech X-Tension DIN Review @ Elite Bastards

Posted by Nathan @ 3:40 AM (EDT)

"Finally, we reach what is, for me, the real piece de resistance of the X-Tension - The so-called G9 digital output. Many of you who own older sets of Creative Labs' speakers may remember that they primarily made use of a proprietary 9-pin DIN connector, which could be connected to SoundBlaster Live!, Audigy and Audigy 2 boards. All was well with this system until the introduction of the X-Fi, which did away with the 9-pin DIN connection on both sound card and newer speakers, and left owners of several Creative Labs speaker systems unable to use the full functionality of their purchases.

Now, thanks to the X-Tension this functionality can be used once again, with the 9-pin DIN connector making an appearance here in all its glory. Thus, if you're the owner of any Creative speaker set which makes use of this connector, you might want to prick up your ears and rejoice right about now."

DH Review: XFX GeForce 8600GT Fatal1ty Professional Series

Posted by Nathan @ 3:40 AM (EDT)

With new cards coming out every few months it is easy to forget that not all of us tend to stay up to date on which card is the fastest or which one delivers the best image quality. The irony is that quite often people who know the most about the graphics cards they use are also the people who spend more time running tech demos than actually playing games.

ThermalRight Ultra 120 eXtreme Cooler Review @ OverclockerCafe

Posted by Nathan @ 3:38 AM (EDT)

Very impressive indeed. I picked up the Scythe S-Flex 800 RPM fan for a HTPC I built with the goal of complete silence. This fan moves air that is barely noticeable to your hand and to have this super low air flow get within one degree Celsius of Thermaltake's flagship cooler running at 1250 RPM is amazing. We are talking LESS than two-thirds the RPM and the same performance.

Ultra X3 1000 Watt Modular Power Supply Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 3:37 AM (EDT)

"Power - it's what we need to run this addiction of ours. The more the better, is the current thinking. With the newest video cards using up to 300 watts of power, it's no wonder that power supplies are beefing up to meet that demand. Many people, however, are still following the same routine with regards to the power supply; it's usually the last thing on the list when planning your dream system. You have just a few of those precious dollars you work so hard for left to purchase one, so you end up with a cheap 400-600 watt power supply, trying to feed that power hungry set of video cards. So you ask yourself, "Why do they not perform as they should? Why can I not overclock the card at all?" It may be your lack of power! One possible solution for your problem could be the Ultra X3 1000 watt modular power supply. Boasting such features as Active PFC, Flex Force cabling, modular design, 70 amp 12v rail, and a 135mm cooling fan, it has all the makings of a beast of a power supply."

I had hoped to also be able to use it in my cell phone (Palm Treo 700p), but unfortunately the phone does not support SDHC cards and didn't even detect the presence of the card at all. I will be using HD Tune and SiSoft Sandra to measure read / write, access times and such. I will also do some real-world testing, where I time how long it takes to transfer data to and from the card."

Tuniq 3 Chassis Review @ Virtual-Hideout

"SunbeamTech/Tuniq has always offered unique and well-built enclosures. Personally, with the Tuniq 3 I like how the front bezel curves under the front of the enclosure, as well as the cleanness of the bezel itself. Nothing is on the front of the bezel except the Tuniq name - this in conjunction with the smooth, clean lines makes for a modern looking enclosure."

NZXT Hush Review @ techPowerUp

Posted by Nathan @ 4:18 AM (EDT)

The NZXT Hush is the newest case in their line-up. The name is also the main feature of this enclosure, as the interior is covered by noise reducing dampening foam. This includes the bottom, sides, front and top of the case. While the interior layout is not very unique, but the screwless design is a great addition and works well. As we are used to from NZXT the exterior design looks great, especially with the blue LED fan and lighting in the door.

MSI NX8500GT-TD256E Geforce 8500GT Videocard Review @ PCSTATS

"Even if you're only a casual gamer, a DirectX 10 videocard gives you access to a lot of the eye candy in the latest game titles, and that's not always so with a DirectX 9.0C videocard. To top things off, if you know where to look you can find a good DirectX 10 class videocard that wont break the bank. MSI's NX8500GT-TD256E is a PCI Express x16 videocard based on the nVIDIA GeForce 8500GT GPU and backed by 256MB of GDDR2 memory. Xigmatek HDT-S963 Exposed Heatpipe Base Heatsink Review @ Frostytech.com

Posted by Nathan @ 4:16 AM (EDT)

"This is not your average aluminum heatsink with copper heatpipes, but it looks innocent enough from the outside. The Xigmatek HDT-S963 heatsink is a unique thermal solution because the German thermal engineers who designed it, made its three copper heatpipes come in direct contact with the CPU itself. If you take the Xigmatek HDT-S963 in hand and flip it over, you'll see an aluminum base with three long grooves cut into it."

AMD/ATI and NVIDIA Graphics Cards in Video Decoding Tasks: June 2007

Posted by Nathan @ 4:15 AM (EDT)

"Much time has passed since our previous analysis of video decoding performance and quality in ATI and NVIDIA video cards. Since that time ATI was bought by AMD, both companies launched new video cards with improved support for video decoding. Software support for hardware-assisted video decoding in drivers is also constantly evolving. The situation with performance and quality may change several times a month. So, we again decided to test how well AMD and NVIDIA GPUs cope with decoding and displaying video data."

Gaming Heaven Review: Colin McRae: DiRT (X360)

Posted by Nathan @ 4:15 AM (EDT)

Having to choose between two great games is terribly difficult, especially when the choices are Forza Motorsport 2 and Colin McRae DiRT for Xbox 360. On one hand, Forza 2 offers a realistic simulation with over 300 licensed cars and plenty of customization options but on the other hand, Codemasters is finally bringing authentic rally racing to the next-generation consoles. Even as I put the pristine DVD in my Xbox 360, I couldn’t help but wonder if I had made the right choice reviewing this game … was sacrificing all those virtual Porsches and Ferraris worth it?

Xinix USB CD SmartBox CL-600 Review @ Bjorn3D

Posted by Nathan @ 4:14 AM (EDT)

I have to admit that I am not the world most organized person. Part of the problem of not being the most organized person is have to keep track of all the copies of CDs and DVDs which I have burned; believe me, it's not an easy task. I have tried using individual CD case, the CD labeling kit, and write the contents on the backside of the CD when comes to label and organize my collection. As for the storage, I have long give up using individual CD cases and those CD wallets or albums and just store the disks in the spindle box, which is how I usually purchase the blank disks. Although some of these methods of storing and organizing disks work better than other, one of the problems that I face is a quick way to sieve through the collection and find the right disk. This is the reason when I see theXinix USB CD SmartBox CL-600 from CrazyPC, I thought to myself, maybe this will solve my problem of organizing my collection and searching for the right disk quickly. Let's join us and take a look at this CD storage unit today.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Preview @ Techgage

Posted by Nathan @ 4:19 AM (EDT)

When Bearlake launched last month, it opened the doors for native 1333FSB processor support. That's where the refreshed Conroe line-up comes into play. In our performance preview of the E6750, we will show you what to expect when its released later this summer.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Performance Preview @ HotHardware.com

Posted by Nathan @ 4:19 AM (EDT)

We’ve just posted a new article at HotHardware exploring the performance and overclockability of Intel’s upcoming Core 2 Duo E6750 processor. The E6750 differs from the older and similarly clocked E6700 in that its front side bus frequency has been increased to 1333MHz, but this isn’t a simple speed bump. The E6750 is also based on a new stepping and revision of the Conroe-core which resulted in some excellent overclocking. How does almost 4GHz with the stock air-cooler sound? Head on over to the site and check it out…

Core 2 Duo E6750 Review @ Hardware Secrets

Posted by Nathan @ 4:18 AM (EDT)

"We received from Intel a Core 2 Duo E6750 engineering sample, which is basically a Core 2 Duo E6700 with a 1,333 MHz FSB instead of 1,066 MHz. It will be launched later this summer together with several other Core 2 Duo models with the new 1,333 MHz FSB, and from the naming used on E6750 we can assume that Intel will use the number "50" on their model numbers to indicate the new external clock rate. Since we also had available a Core 2 Duo E6700 and a Core 2 Extreme QX6700 in our lab, we could make a terrific comparison between these three CPUs - as all three run internally at 2.66 GHz - to answer two basic questions: By how much the new 1,333 MHz FSB will improve PC performance? What is better, a quad-core CPU with 1,066 MHz FSB or a dual-core CPU with 1,333 MHz FSB? Read on."

Antec P190 Super Advanced Mid Tower Chassis Review @ Virtual-Hideout

Posted by Nathan @ 4:15 AM (EDT)

“The Antec P190 Advanced Super Mid Tower has everything you could want in any fully functional enclosure. The several extra features that have been added similarly found the P182 enclosure are a welcomed addition. Not only do you gain the extra space behind the motherboard tray for wire management, you gain the benefits of excellent cooling thanks to the many case fans including the 200mm side panel fan, silenced removable hard drive bays, and extra sound dampening materials added to the chassis to break down the noise. And if this isn't enough features for you there are the included Neo-Linked 650 and 550 watt ‘Neo Power’ power supplies that simply won't let you down when you really need the power. And again, it just can't be stressed enough how reliable your power supplies must be when building a power house dual CPU or BTX form factor system.”

Logitech Z-5450 Wireless Speakers Review @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 11:29 AM (EDT)

Movie decoding is handled comfortably here with support for Dolby Digital, Dolby Prologic 2, DTS and DTS 96/24 hardware decoding – definitely no lack of support here. The Z-5450's handled movie soundtracks very comfortably with no issues of dialogue clarity from the centre channel of any digital noise from the amplifier. Our previous concern about the subwoofer's ability to play low frequency bass notes have arisen again here with demanding film soundtracks at times asking a little more than the unit can deliver resulting in the usual garbled fluffy port distortion, which are characteristic of this design in many different shapes and forms. However, having said that, and for the most part, movie quality performance was a first rate foray into multi-channel surround happiness.

Akasa have made a good name for themselves in the computer PSU market with their PaxPower series. While Akasa mainly offer fans and other computer modding parts, their first entry in the PSU market was a success as the PaxPower units were not only powerful but also exceptionally silent. Sunbeam 3D Storm @ techPowerUp

Posted by Nathan @ 11:26 AM (EDT)

One of the things I like about the Sunbeam 3D Storm case is the mesh front with washable open-cell foam to help keep dust from entering the system. The black mesh and the silver aluminum add a subtle touch of class to the case and give it a lot of style. The 3D Core Fan system adds greater flexibility to the positioning of the fans, as well as supporting up to four 120 mm fans. The Core Fan system works very well to help reduce component temperatures, especially with passively cooled components.
