"As a single player experience, World in Conflict has one major flaw. The game's control mechanism and perspective matches poorly with the story - the player is portrayed as an officer actually commanding troops on the ground, but there's no actual avatar unit that interacts with the game world. Your forces can get wiped out, but as the disembodied Lt. Parker, you can still call in for reinforcements and win the day. Having a command post on the map would have detracted from the game's no base building ideology, and an avatar unit would probably have posed major level design challenges, but I found my suspension of disbelief hanging by a thread during certain missions." |

We recently got our hands on a pair of Diamond’s Viper HD 2900 XT 1GB cards and have compared their performance to the original 512MB Radeon HD 2900 XT, and a trio of GeForce 8800 series cards, all running in both single- and multi-GPU CrossFire and SLI configurations. We also talk about the card’s bundle and overclockability. |

New Standard Keyboards NSK 535 R Keyboard Review @ HardwareLogic |
Posted by Nathan @ 2:27 PM (EDT) |
Like all old fads, the alphabetical approach is trying to make a comeback, or at least a partial one. New Standard Keyboards sent us their NSK 535R, a four row keyboard arranged alphabetically that targets hunt and peckers, or those otherwise unable to type without looking down. Will this new (old?) keyboard deep six the current standard QWERTY arrangement that dominates the desktop landscape today, or is it just another poseur that will sink into oblivion? |

There are alot of flash drives available today with several different features. Some focus on portable applications, others on speed, or even ultra-portability. While some of these units have some nifty features, it doesn't do any good it you don't have it with you. Many flash drives come with a lanyard, but let's face it: for most people hanging a lanyard around your neck isn't a daily ritual. |

Advances have been made in many fields of computer technology from displays to video cards and hard drive capacities to thermal pastes. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that no self-respecting enthusiast would ever be caught using generic white paste to help cool their expensive computer equipment. Thermal interface material or TIM is something that anyone with a bit of patience and a few dollars can use to help lower the temperatures of their computer's CPU, video card and even their Northbridge. Back in the day it was perfectly acceptable to use the included white paste that came with heatsinks as the heat output of PC's was much lower than it is today. With ever increasing energy requirements it quickly became apparent that this generic goop just wasn't going to cut it anymore. Company after company began developing the next best thing since sliced bread to help aid in heat transfer. With so many different options available from silver particles to diamond dust it is easy to become overwhelmed in a sea of paste. So let us do the work for you. Come with me as I put some of today's most popular TIMs along with the timeless classics to the test against the white goo to see just how much of a difference it can really make. |

Today, I have the privilege of reviewing the Scythe Ninja Mini, one of the newest CPU coolers from Scythe. Scythe has been around 5 years now. They’re not so long in the tooth as companies like Intel or NVIDIA, but they’re proving to have staying power through innovations and quality products. This particular cooler is built around performance and silent computing. Will it live up to the standards Scythe has set for itself? Let’s see. |

Many manufacturers search out designs that will help them develop a product known for extraordinary performance. Benchmark Reviews has already reviewed many of the very best CPU coolers available to enthusiasts, from the very unique and original design of the Zaward Sylphee ZCJ003 and VIVO to the oversized Thermaltake MaxOrb CL-P0369. Not long ago, we even reviewed the Ultra ULT33186 Chilltec TEC CPU cooler which combined three different cooling technologies into one solution. All of these products performed very well, but none of them really set itself apart from the pack like the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 did. In this review we will test the OCZ Vendetta (OCZTVEND) Exposed Copper Heatpipe Direct Touch CPU cooler against a field of well-established competitors. |

Now this was a surprise. I expected the Zalman VF900 and the Tt DuOrb to perform about on par with one another. Five degrees Celsius difference at this level is huge! So much so that I went back and double checked the Zalman's mounting to ensure all was perfectly flush and mounted properly. It was. If the five degrees Celsius doesn't get your attention then the 27 degrees Celsius difference under load between the OEM cooler and the Thermaltake should leave you gaping speechless. |

The Alienware Area-51 7500 is the workhorse system in Alienware's line of desktop computers. The term workhorse is only used insofar as the unit is the base model desktop. "The Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 has thirty-two aluminum heat fins perpendicular to four copper heat pipes. You might notice that this VGA cooler seems much bigger than a normal-sized video card. That’s because Arctic Cooling designed it to be that way so that the fins could transfer the heat far away from the GPU. The Accelero S1 has black plastic advertising the product on either side, which is irremovable. The underside of the cooler is where you’ll find the point at which the heat pipes meet. Arctic Cooling has already put a strip of thermal paste on the cooler, which is great because Arctic Cooling produces some of the best thermal paste on the market." |

Today, a large percentage of enthusiast user is trying to build a very quiet or even inaudible computer system. We all know that quiet cooling fans are only a part of the "silent solution"; an efficient, quiet power supply unit is a must when building a low noise computer. Although still not very well known to enthusiasts worldwide, Be Quiet (a subsidiary company of Listan which originates from Germany) designs and builds some of the best noiseless power supply units out there. Be Quiet units have never disappointed us in the past, but while they perform extremely well by any standard, they also tend to cost quite a lot. Today we will take a look at the most powerful silent unit they have available, the DarkPower Pro 1kW. |

One of the computer world's most famous quotes (although he probably never said it) is of course Bill Gates saying that "we will never need more than 640 Kb of memory". As we all know there can never be "enough" memory in a computer system. As memory gets cheaper and the upper limit of what the processor can address has increased, the memory need of the software we use somehow keeps increasing. Not only that, as the performance of the other components in a system increases, so does the demands on the memory. |

Since today's graphics processors are the hottest ever, we are seeing heavier and more robust stock coolers to accompany them. While these stock coolers are much better than the previous generations, they are still only barely adequate to deal with the new level of thermal production. The current GPU king: nVidia's 8800 line of chips, generate some serious heat and need an equally serious cooling method. |
Xigmatek XP-S964 Copper Heatpipe 92mm CPU Cooler @ Benchmark Reviews |
Posted by Nathan @ 6:16 AM (EDT) |
Ideally every CPU cooler should perform well, which most do. But in the age of advertising and marketing, consumers are easily mislead into believing a product will perform well just because of the company branding it. I have reviewed some very nice coolers over the summer by some of the most well known names in the industry; only to be let down by their claims of premium performance. Well, to be honest, prior to very recently I had never heard of Xigmatek before. Just a few weeks ago Benchmark Reviews unveiled the Xigmatek HDT-S1283, which tested to be the best-performing CPU we have seen to date. Perhaps on the same level is the Xigmatek XP-S964 Copper Heatpipe CPU Cooler. |

The Hiper Anubis, named after the Egyptian god of the dead, guardian of the land of the dead and general master chief of the underworld. With the recent release of ATI’s power hungry 2900 XT, power draw is at an all time high for even one GPU unit. With a reported 215 watts per card that leaves you needing the recommended 550 watt PSU for a single card and a 750 watt PSU for Crossfire. With the Silencer 750 making the certification, PCP&C wanted to release a special unit just for the occasion. TopDesk however will run without this feature enabled, bringing new functionality to the basic versions of Windows Vista that lack Aero3D. In addition to the Flip3D feature, TopDesk can also beautifully emulate Exposé, a popular feature in Mac OS X, which upon a single keystroke, "instantly tiles all of your open windows, scales them down and neatly arranges them, so you can see what’s in every single one"." |

Now let's examine a board with almost the least functionality on the market, which nevertheless belongs to the ATX category." |

The year is 1960. You're enjoying a smoke while taking a flight over the Atlantic Ocean. In your lap sits a present lovingly wrapped presumably by mom and dad. Taking out your wallet you look at an old photo of the family and remember how your parents always said you were special. That I was '..destined for great things'. Just then all hell breaks loose as the plane is sent spiraling downwards crashing into the water. Finding yourself deep underwater you hold your breath as you struggle back to the surface. You can see the warm glow of flames on the top and with each passing second your lungs become your enemy. With just a few seconds left you make your way back to the surface gasping for the air you so desparately need. In a scene not unlike the movie 'Cast Away' you are surrounded by flaming gasoline and not too far in the distance you see the remains of the airplane slipping below the water. The only chance for survival is a small island with a tall tower seemingly out of place here in the middle of nowhere. |

Sure enough the online modes and mechanics are amongst the best, and you’ll probably experience some of the best moments of gaming here. It is the singleplayer that really shines though. And it will be during these moments that you’ll realize that WiC is more than just a strategy game. After all, when was the last time you wanted to smack somebody up when playing Warcraft? |

NZXT Lexa Blackline Mid-Tower ATX PC Case Review @ Pro-Clockers |

Revisions of PC cases usually consist of lessons learned from the previous version and incorporating user feedback from the enthusiast community. Sometimes manufacturers try to blend “the old with the new” and try not to move away from what made the product so popular in the first place. NZXT seems to have done that with the revised Lexa case called the Blackline. The original Lexa had a lightweight aluminum chassis, but the Blackline sports a sturdier and heavier steel chassis. Let’s see what other changes NZXT has made to a very popular case in the gaming community. |

Even after the latest new hotness has a change to percolate through desktop lineups, enterprise-class hardware can still hold the promise of faster performance, better reliability, and longer warranty coverage: a trifecta of goodness that's hard for any enthusiast to ignore. |

"Well, the numbers don't lie: the mystery gray goop in the syringe works rather well compared to the stock white stuff. Even if the numbers are slightly lower, that is good, as compared to being slightly higher or even the same. The ZT-100 thermal grease is easy to spread, and the 3.5 grams should last for about 4 applications." |

"Most of us don't upgrade cars nearly as frequently as we upgrade technology. While cell phones get lost, broken and outdated every couple of years, many cars now on the road were built when cell phones were just a dream for the average American. Unless you've just coughed up the cash for a brand new luxury car, chances are your cell phone and iPod don't get along too well with your car audio system." |
Tagan ITZ Series 1300W Power Supply Review @ ThinkComputers.org |
Posted by Nathan @ 6:08 AM (EDT) |
“Back in June we took a look at the GuardianX Silver Power 1000W power supply from Tagan and it received good scores. Now Tagan has a new 1300W power supply from the ITZ series. It has an 80% efficiency, is quad CPU and video card ready, and has an auto turbo mode to combine all six +12V rails into one. Also the ITZ is covered in a titanium blue mirror-finish casing. Let's see how it stacks up to the other 1000W plus power supplies we have tested.” |

"The debate of the paste rages on! What makes one thermal paste better than another? Is it the little features in these so-very-essential products, or is it sheer performance? In my everlasting quest of the answer, I have come across Arctic Cooling’s MX-2 thermal compound, which appears to be a promising contestant in the goop challenge." |

"What can I say? Everyone knows I'm a Japanese monster movie buff, but many do not know that the last Godzilla Movie was made in 2005 and since the 1960's, the sound and action effects have come from cheesy to almost outrageous. I thought Godzilla was in the room with me - his footsteps made the room shake and his breath whistled the hair on the back of my neck. The action of the movie was brought to me and again, the sound carried throughout the house, as when I was playing music. When my HTPC is finally completed, I just might have to use these speakers." |
How to Force 1000Hz USB Sample Rate in Windows Vista @ NGOHQ.com |
Posted by Nathan @ 6:06 AM (EDT) |
"Microsoft Windows's default USB sample rate (125Hz - 8ms response time) is surely not enough for today's end-users. There are too many 1000Hz (1ms) patches out there, but most of them aren't supporting Windows Vista due to the new security features, especially in Vista x64. However, I found a way to do it, but I'm not taking any responsibilities for any damage, so use it at your own risk! If you're still interested - just follow these instructions." |

"Most gamers will agree that the mouse is one the most important pieces of input hardware one can have when gaming. Mouse is also the main input device in most game genres so it is easy to see why manufacturers would like to find the Holy Grail of gaming mouse design. Today that company is Logitech and their G9 Laser Mouse. Does it have The Right Stuff?" |

Cooler Master has been releasing a lot of new products lately. From cases to peripherals, I’m starting to see their name everywhere. One of their most recent products to hit their website is the Hyper 212 CPU cooler. With support for all platforms, four heat pipes, and a silent, blue LED 120mm fan, this cooler has a lot of things going for it. |

BFG Tech who is best known for their overclocked NVIDIA cards which continue to carry a lifetime warranty have recently decided to mix it up in the cooling department. While they have offered full blown water block solutions for a while now, people who want something a a bit tamer than these without resorting to the stock cooler haven't had much luck. |

While most of us may have a hard time getting up for work and staying awake during the day, others are jumping around at their desks. How though? Because they are pumped up on energy products. In this review we will see a multitude of energy supplements, some that you may have heard of and some you haven't. Let's take a look to see what sort of products Xoxide.com has provided to me and see how this much caffeine will affect me over a single weekend. |

Despite the fact that we all wish to own the best graphic cards on the market, the reality is that not all of us can afford or need the top of the line 8800 GTX or HD 2900XT. Many users are looking for a simple graphic card that does not cost a leg or an arm and offers a better performance than the integrated graphic that is included with their system. Both NVIDIA and ATI have cards that will satisfy the need of the budget buyer. We have looked at the NVIDIA’s 8500 GT and ATI HD 2600 XT and today we will take a look at the HD 2400 Pro from VisionTek. |

"All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by the Hardware Day and it was honestly quite fascinating to see how a team of designers can continue to progress on a tool which many of us take for advantage each and every day. |
