Samsung SCX-4500 Multi-function Printer Review @ Accelenation |
Posted by Nathan @ 5:22 PM (EST) |
Samsung's latest entry into the multi-function market is a sleek, piano black device that combines a scanner with a mono laser printer. But does this unit perform as well as it looks? |

The Sapphire 770 is built on an all black PCB with decent passive cooling heatsinks on the northbridge and southbridge chips and on the MOSFETs which should help keep things cool when overclocking and help achieve better speeds. |

It's been a while since PC Freaks & Geeks have taken a look at a memory kit with the Patriot name branding. So when the delivery guy turned up with a kit from said named company we were eager to see if it performed as well as their DDR2 range did. Up for review today is a shiny new DDR3 kit from Patriot's Extreme Performance (EP) range. |

"... Although Tsunami have made some efforts in improving their products ... they fall behind against the better and more established PSU brands. Performance is adequate for most low end/budget users ... but I wouldn't recommended it for anyone else. ... Overall the PSU unit itself is rock solid its just a shame the wires and lack of accessories let it down." |

I have to say that the card performed above my expectations. I played Call of Duty 4 for roughly 3 hours straight and the card maintained a good frame rate throughout each map. I estimate my frames to average out between the mid 90s to the mid 130s, sometimes hitting a lot higher depending on the location in the map of course. |

"Today I've got the Sony Ericsson W760i Walkman Cell Phone and it's just packed with features, it's so much more than a phone really. The W760i is near perfect really, in my time with it I grew to like it very much, honestly I didn't want to give it back, but I had to, that's just how it works. I think if the W760i had a full keyboard it would be the perfect phone for me really, it has everything I like in a phone, excellent call quality, GPS, it's easy to use and it's just packed with features. "We were invited to visit Cooler Master´s brand new power supply testing setup, a very high end installation build to deliver up to 1200W and higher load to any PSU hooked up to the system. We bought some cheap PSU units from local Belgium stores to see how they would measure up when stressed to their rated wattage... read on to find out about the carnage." |
Samsung LN52A850 52” 120Hz, 1080P LCD TV Review @ Hardware Canucks |
Posted by Nathan @ 5:19 PM (EST) |
Even though at this point I have only had the Samsung LN52A850 in my possession for a short amount of time, I have really come to appreciate almost everything it has to offer. Even without having the time to properly calibrate the picture to my liking, it was able to produce absolutely eye-watering images of such stunning clarity that I am now more anxious than ever to actually sit down for a few hours and tweak it to my heart's content. Its design has been a hit with everyone who comes to my apartment and I happen to love the touch of red instead of a depressingly black bezel. |

"Overclocking the P5Q3 could not be any easier. I raised the memory voltage to 1.7V and left all other voltages on AUTO. Rasing the front side bus speed in 10MHz steps landed me at a stable 450, which is the same speed I was able to reach with the P5Q Pro. Memory was set to 1350MHz @ 6-6-5-16 2T. As mentioned earlier, there is no Command Rate setting so it defaulted to 2T. I attempted to reach a higher overclock by manually entering voltages but found that leaving them in AUTO yielded similar results. Dual core overclocking should be just as painless." |
bit-tech News: Gigabyte's Radeon HD 4850 1GB (GV-R485MC-1GH) |
Posted by Nathan @ 5:18 PM (EST) |
There are some clear benefits to the additional 512MB of graphics memory present on Gigabyte's Radeon HD 4850 1GB graphics card in some titles, but they're not there in others. Over time, the industry trend is definitely moving towards more graphics memory - that trend has existed for years now and it's not going to change any time soon - but the improvements on the Radeon HD 4850 1GB aren't quite as profound as they are on the Radeon HD 4870 1GB. |

After a rather disappointing HD 3000 series, ATI took the world by surprise with the HD 4000 generation of graphics cards. Since the launch of the HD 4000 series back in June, ATI has reclaimed its presence in the market and has been steadily eating away at Nvida's marketshare. Benchmark Reviews has had the opportunity to review several cards from the HD 4800 series lineup and today we look at one of the newest additions to the family: the Radeon HD 4830. This particular model, the EAH4830, comes to us from Asus and sports a custom cooler design and factory overclocked memory. We'll put it through its paces and find out how it compares to its two closest siblings; the HD 4670 and the HD 4850. |

“If you look for familiar brand name when searching for your new notebook then HP will place itself on top of that list. If you don’t have large budget then you will most certainly look for models from “S” class and most probably it will be based on AMD platform. "The ASRock G43Twin-FullHD motherboard is a very good all-rounder. It's great for any HTPC user or even a system builder. It competes very well against others in its class, easily matching the performance and features of the Gigabyte G43. What I do like about the ASRock G43Twin-FullHD, is that it supports both DDR2 and DDR3 ram, as well as a daughter card with DVI and Display Port." |

"This motherboard produces a strong positive impression both in terms of functionality and technical level. In fact, Foxconn hasn't had any problems with product quality for a long time already. But BIOS versions and some minor features often indicated that the company used to be manufacturing third-party designs for other brands. Now we can say that it's a very interesting motherboard. If there's enough of these boards in stock and its price is at least similar as that of competing products, it will certainly become very popular." |

"The P6T Deluxe OC Palm Edition has earned its overclocking wings. This is something it does quite well with a minimum amount of tweaking so even the novice can push the realistic limits on performance with a little patience. Leaning hard on the P6T I was able to get to a baseclock frequency of 210 that proved to be stable with only some Super Pi testing. In the end, a baseclock of 203 with a clock multiplier of 19 delivered a prime stable 3.87GHz on the CPU with 811MHz on the Qimonda memory with Turbo Mode disabled. The P6T performed better than the DX58SO in quite a few benchmarks but traded those wins for losses in about the same number of tests. What does that tell you? Both boards are great performers at stock speeds. Where the Asus separated itself from the Intel offering was on the overclocking front. This really was the expected result. The Intel offering was able to gain about the same overclock but did so with a much lower baseclock frequency that results in less memory bandwidth and performance in real tasks and games. When the limits are pushed, the Asus P6T was able to recover from every failed overclocking attempt I tried with a simple shut down and reboot." |

I've held onto the Samsung LN55A950 for over 2 months and every second I sit down in front of it, I'm blown away by its performance. I'll end up re-watching some show or movie in HD and notice details that I missed before. The LN55A950 is certainly not for everyone as it holds a high price tag, but those who want the best shouldn't settle for anything less. Known in its pre-production phase as Godzilla, the Gateway P-7801u notebook lives up to its moniker by making "big" a design ethic. From its 17-inch screen with full 1080p resolution, to a class-leading GeForce card humming away within, the P-Series FX doesn't skimp on much. While it predictably falls quite low on the portability spectrum, we found the machine to burn through everyday desktop-replacement chores, and even most games, without complaint, and for a very reasonable price. |

“The AeroRacer series feature styling reminiscent of a race car. The particular model up for review today is the AeroRacer Pro, which is a mid-tower chassis. When it comes to versatility and ventilation, the AeroRacer Pro has no competition. The overall lines are styled like a race car, and it features both an enormous 400mm side intake fan (which reminds me of the large radiator cooling fans on a car) and an “Engine Start” button for powering up the computer. The massive intake fan has up to 250CFM of airflow for maximum ventilation, and an optional rear 120mm fan for advanced cooling. Tool-free assembly, convenient dual USB 2.0, microphone, and speaker ports, and easy-access power and reset buttons finish off this little beauty.” |
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P Ultra Durable 3 Motherboard @ HotHardware.com |
Posted by Nathan @ 5:03 AM (EST) |
Today, we take a step back from Intel’s new Core i7 to look at one of the motherboards from Gigabyte's new Ultra Durable 3 line, the EP45-UD3P. As its name suggests, this board is based on the current mainstream chipset offering from Intel, the P45 Express. Although we've covered this ground before, most recently with our look at two recent offerings from MSI, it's helpful to remember that the P45 is closely related to the X48 Express with support for Core 2 Duo and Quad processors as well as DDR2 or DDR3 RAM. What that means for most people is that the EP45-UD3P, as well as other P45 boards, makes for a great upgrade without breaking the bank. |

The Gigabyte X48-DQ6 Motherboard is interesting not because it's a X48 board, but because it's a X48 with DDR2 support. The Gigabyte X48 board itself isn't that cheap, but the cost of the platform should be less than other X48 motherboards since DDR2 is still al ittle cheaper than DDR3. That, or if you got a stock pile of DDR2, you don't need to throw it out. From an engineering standpoint, this was also a no brainer since the X48-DQ6 design mirrors their own X38 board so a simple chipset swap was all they needed to do at a fab level. |

Gigabyte EP45-DS3R P45 Motherboard Review @ Hardware Canucks |
Posted by Nathan @ 8:08 PM (EST) |
As many of you are aware, Intel's P45 chipset is one of the most prominent chipsets on the market today. Users love the reasonable price of a board based on P45 as well as the perks the chipset offers. Targeted for a broad range of users, the Gigabyte EP45-DS3R lies in the mid-range of the P45 chipset empire but it is also one of the seemingly countless Gigabyte P45 chipset boards on the market. As such, it should appeal to an enthusiast user looking for a decent board at a reasonable price as well as a mainstream user who may never overclock the board at all. The price of the EP45-DS3R puts the main competitive alternatives in the $150 range and includes popular boards like the ASUS P5Q line and the MSI Neo 3 boards. |

"Enough with all the buzz about "killing" the iPhone, already! Every smartphone has its merits, and not every company is out to steal Apple's thunder. For example: Nokia has the amazing N96 camera phone (and a forthcoming 5800 touch phone) and T-Mobile and HTC have focused on an operating system from Google that extends the power of the G1. Likewise, Research in Motion (better known as RIM), the Canadian company that makes the BlackBerry line of smartphones, has cornered the market on thumb-clicking business users. Yet, in an odd turn, its latest handset - the BlackBerry Storm - is a stark departure. Designed with both consumers and business users in mind, it's a very powerful piece of kit. However, an awkward capacitive touchscreen proves a major Achilles heel on an otherwise well-crafted device." |

"The Antec Notebook Cooler 200 has one of the largest fans I have seen in a computer cooling device and that large fan lives up to its looks. With impressive cooling power, the Notebook Cooler 200 definitely deserves high marks. Also, between the mirror panels and the blue glow that you can turn on around the fan, the aesthetics of the cooler are also very nice. Another bonus of the large fan size is the softer and lower fan noise that the cooler makes when the fan is turned on. Even at the high setting, the amount of noise emitted by the cooler is minimal and did not annoy me at all." |

Noctua is one of the newest cooling manufacturers on the market. But don't let their new face fool you. Noctua means buisness. They've already taken the cooling world by storm and they have proven to be a tough competitor when it comes to CPU coolers and fans. Today, Noctua brings us the NH-C12P CPU cooler. By utilizing a C-Type Air Flow Gap design gives this CPU cooler a lower profile. Also, it utilizes six heatpipes to better distirbute the heat across the entire surface of the CPU coolers aluminum fins. To top it off, Noctua placed an already reliable, quiet, yet powerful fan, the NH-12P 120mm fan. |

Judging the value of the these cards is something that’s generated a fair amount of discussion here in the office, not least because for just a tenner more than the MSI GeForce GTX 280 HydroGen and a good £40 less than the BFG GeForce GTX 280 H₂OC you can pick up ATI’s dual GPU monster, the 4870 X2 – unquestionably a better performing card in the majority of circumstances. |

The goal OCZ's technicians had when developing this heatsink and fan combo was to make it silent without sacrificing cooling performance, and they managed to do just that. Regarding noise levels, I would have no problem using the Gladiator Max in a HTPC or a workstation PC - the fan is barely audible from a foot away, and is dead silent from a meter on. Overall, the performance is perfect for lower voltage processors, but I'd have second thoughts before popping this onto a quad-core system unless you really value quiet operation. There you have it, OCZ's "Gladiator Max" CPU heatsink and fan. |

"Wow! The NZXT Whisper is very sleek looking with a nice solid black look all the way around the case. There aren’t any decals or words on the case which is a huge plus for someone like me who isn’t a fan of decals or words that I didn’t personalize. The case is quite heavy weighing in at 27.1 pounds being constructed of predominately steel and some aluminum. The front of the case opens up to reveal the seven drive bays and the 120mm fan. The drive bay covers are solid plastic so there is no air exiting or entering the case through the front except the 120mm intake fan below the drive bays." |

“Notebooks today are faster and hotter than ever. However they're not getting any thicker. In fact they're thinner than they've ever been. So where does all that heat go? Well, notebook manufacturers are doing their best to design notebooks that not so much vent the heat, but more so can handle the high heat environment. We all know that heat can be the death of electronics, so relieving your notebook of the heat is absolutely crucial to its long term reliability and performance.” |

"Overall, the Tagan found a nice balance of budget building practice, style, and features. The Curbic looks very nice with the mesh front panel and blue LED fans. The case was surprisingly quiet for running two 180mm fans. On high they are very much in the range of what would be considered livable for a desktop; with the fans on low it was very quiet. The Tagan Aplus Curbic is not yet available in the US, and has an estimated MSRP of $59.99 and should be available in retail stores before the holiday. The Curbic would be a very good fit for the user who wants an inexpensive, yet a nice looking, case..." |

It's a slider phone of a different sort as when you slide it you reveal a full QWERTY keyboard to make sending text messages and overall text input much easier. The Propel is a fairly lightweight phone even though it is rather large, it's got excellent call quality, great battery life and it even takes good pictures. It's an all around great little phone that anyone who types a lot will appreciate and even if you don't I think you'll like having a full keyboard only a slide away. " |

"It's performance is astonishing when you consider the $80 price tag, $65 after rebate . I wish I had an 8800GT to hand, because I wouldn't be surprised to see the MSI R4670 match or beat it right across the board, and consider that the 8800GT's are still twice the price or more, and it's a no brainer. Pretty much everyone is feeling the pinch and counting the pennies, so it's nice to know that if you do have to compromise and get a low priced card for your gaming, your not going to be missing out on much this time around. If you're the casual gamer and used to buying budget priced cards, then the MSI R4670 might just give you an inkling on what you are missing out on with higher end cards." |

And so it is that Nvidia has come to answer the HD 4800 series video card onslaught from ATI with their third and latest addition to the GTX-200 series, the new and improved GTX 260 utilizing 216 stream processors (up from 196). And there's nothing crazy about that. What is crazy though is Nvidia's naming scheme. Although the new GTX 260 with increased SP's is planted firmly between the original GTX 260 and their top-of-the-line GTX 280, Nvidia has chosen to maintain the 260 designation, and instead allows vendors to provide their own naming scheme to this most recent combatant to enter into the theater of operations. ASUS DSL-N13 wireless ADSL 2/2+ Router Review @ Elite Bastards |
Posted by Nathan @ 8:01 PM (EST) |
"One of the DSL-N13's big selling points is the inclusion of what ASUS have dubbed AiDisk. In short, this is an FTP server application run by the router, which allows you to connect any USB hard disk to the device and use it for file storage and sharing over both public and private networks. Users can be added and removed via the web interface to grant them access, and all of the usual sets of rights are available, meaning that users can be given combinations of read, write and delete access as required to either the public (WAN) or private (LAN) FTP folders. Guest access can also be allowed or disallowed, and the FTP server's port can be changed easily within the interface. Of course, this capability works best in tandem with dynamic DNS, meaning that you'll only ever have a single hostname to worry about to access files on the hard disk." |

"There are no major problems with this product but I found a couple of issues that should be addressed. The internal SATA port placement should be redesigned to avoid possible issues with large videocards installed in the second PCI-E x16 slot. This is actually a common design flaw found in many boards and can be prevented by using right angled SATA ports. Asus does well to implement right angled ports in most of their boards but not this one. To nitpick a bit further, every current motherboard should have an eSATA port located on the rear panel for immediate use." |

“DDR3 is fast becoming the new standard as all things computer change. Memory makers know that some standards don't have to be exceeded, but improved rather. Here is a good case and point. I have here a Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR3 1333MHz 4GB Dual Channel Memory Kit. It's not, 1600 MHz, or 1800 MHz, but a solid supported 1333 MHz. What's so special about it? Check out the specs and I'll sum it up for you after.” |
Intel X25-M 80GB 2.5-inch Solid State Disk Review @ Tweaktown |

The testing for the new Intel X25-M has been completed for a couple of weeks now, but I have been putting off writing the article. Reviewers are faced with tough decisions from time to time; generally it is because we had found a fatal flaw and try to work with a company to correct the issue. This time the flaw is simply that the drive is too good. Intel is saying that their first entry into the consumer SSD market is able to read up to 250 MB/s, while other products are claiming a maximum of 175 MB/s. Honestly, who in their right mind would want to send over a consumer SSD for us to review knowing that it would be compared to the Intel X25-M? - Where do I sign up for unemployment because my job is gone? |

The AMD chipset platform is constantly changing with new releases from AMD and NVIDIA to satisfy any need that may arise. The 790GX chipset is geared at providing the best integrated graphics performance on this platform and it succeeds at that admirably. ECS's board performed well within the range of the other 790GX boards I've tested and has the features that you would want from a motherboard with this chipset including Side Port memory, HDMI port, and integrated graphics in the form of the HD 3300 which make it a compelling HTPC motherboard. One feature which is missing from this board is 1MHz CPU Clock frequency adjustment, meaning that you have to adjust the frequency by 5MHz at a time instead of 1MHz at a time. This makes the overclocking a little harder compared to the many boards on the market that have 1MHz stepping. |

As DDR3 memory becomes more and more mainstay with Intel platforms, the choices we have to make get harder and harder when it comes to what will give us the best performance. Memory is one of the most critical components in our computers. If we have too little system memory, our programs are sluggish or don't open or even they hang up when they do open. If the of memory is too slow then our programs run slower because the overall response time of our operating system is not quick enough to handle a multitude of programs or multitasking. |

"What you get with the Gigabyte GA EX-58 Extreme is a high quality, feature laden, class leading motherboard. It truly excelled in the performance department and showed the potential of Tri Channel DDR 3 memory. Pushing the Intel Core i7 920 to 3.9Ghz demonstrated that the entry level offering is more than capable of matching the more expensive Extreme Edition. All in all the GA EX-58 proved itself to be a top class performer and deserving of our Editor's Choice Award." |

"Lexar has sent me over the JumpDrive Solo Vault 4gb USB drive, it's an enterprise class device that features military grade security, AES 256 bit encryption that is FIPS 140-2 Level 1 certified, metal casing and everything is onboard the drive itself. Of course if that's not enough, it's fast, very fast, coming in a close second to the fastest drive I've got on hand, the OCZ Rally2 Turbo. " |

With the ever increasing sizes of our computer components, we find ourselves trying to find that perfect chassis that can house our most prized components. Cooler Master has come up with a solution to help with our ever increasing 'larger' needs, by bringing back an old time favorite amongst us enthusists. It incorporates many new features that are needed by today's standards of cooling. Simply put, this chassis is huge. It can house some of the biggest computer components available, anything from large motherboards and long video cards, to extremely large air coolers, or for those of us who choose to do so, it can easily accommodate water cooling setups. |
