Thermaltake ProWater 880i Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 1:53 PM (EDT)

"At idle and stock settings, Thermaltake's kit fights for the number one spot against the recently reviewed kit from AMA. Cranking the fan speed to the maximum enables it to shave off that degree and take the lead. Under load, the ProWater has a solid advantage even over the custom water cooling. With the clock speed increased to a moderate 3.33GHz, Thermaltake once again wins at idle by a fair margin. It's only when under load that fan speed makes a noticeable difference, where moving from minimum to maximum takes 5 degrees Celsius off. At those settings, it can't quite keep up with the custom water cooling loop, where it loses by a one to six Celsius, depending on fan speed."

Sapphire Radeon HD4850 512 MB GDDR3 Review @ Hi Tech Legion

Posted by Nathan @ 1:52 PM (EDT)

"The Sapphire Radeon HD4850 is appraised greatly by users. This version of the HD4850 by Sapphire is definitely something to look at. Now, the important thing on a video card is how it would do with the temperature of your current system. Of course, temperature is a very important subject when it comes down to gaming and computers in general. Too much heat can lead to slow response times, to the point where it can lead to the computer to slow to a crawl, causing it to freeze. Anyone that uses a computer, gamer or not, does not want that to happen. Let us go on a treasure hunt and seek out this gem that could be right to display on your system."

Acer Aspire One D150 @ InsideHW

Posted by Nathan @ 1:51 PM (EDT)

“The age of netbooks has started with models that had 7 inch displays. Very soon all of us noticed that this is not enough, so models with 8, 9 and 10 inch displays became netbook mainstream models. Acer postponed presentation of its 10 inch model for a long time but it seems that they have made a right decision because this will be, probably, the year of transition to 10 inch models. As a reminder, we will tell you that ASUS has announced discontinuance of its 8 and 9 inch display Eee PC models. Finally, in our test lab has appeared Acer Aspire One D150: new Acer’s trump card in the netbook deck…”

HP Firebird 802 Review @ Digital Trends

Posted by Nathan @ 1:49 PM (EDT)

"After leaving traces of drool on HP's tiny-yet-powerful Firebird on the show floor at CES, we couldn't wait to get (a clean) one home and put it through all the rigors of real-world gaming. The computer's hybrid design combines components from both the powerful desktop and compact notebook realms in an attempt to wring both performance and efficiency from a compact desktop you wouldn't be ashamed to show off. It's a unique approach that flies in the face of the typical over-the-top gaming rigs that emphasize computational grunt above all else. But can scavenged notebook pieces really compete in a field dominated by shameless watt guzzlers? We set up our freshly acquired Firebird up in the DT labs to find out."

Sunbeam Core-Contact Freezer 92mm Heatsink Review @ Frostytech.com

Posted by Nathan @ 7:36 PM (EDT)

"Sunbeamtech's Core-Contact Freezer 92mm heatsink stands 122mm tall, measures 97mm across and accommodates one or two 92mm fans. The heatsink ships with a single fan mounted on rubber vibration absorbing posts that spins at 1,200~2,200 RPM, extra rubber mounting posts are supplied. The all aluminum construction, apart from four 6mm copper heatpipes exposed at the base, keeps weight down to a feathery 272 grams. In all other respects the Sunbeam Core-Contact Freezer 92mm Edition is essentially a shrunken down version of its namesake. It will no doubt satisfy users looking for a sub-125mm tall cooler for compact PC cases."

In case you were wondering where Razer came up with these names, both Lycosa and Arctosa are families of wolf spiders, just like the Tarantula that shares its name with Razer's original gaming keyboard. Third-Generation Apple iPod Shuffle Review @ Digital Trends

Posted by Nathan @ 4:07 PM (EDT)

"With Apple's minimalistic taste in design, less is always more. And there's no better evidence than the latest iPod Shuffle, which has no buttons, no display, no expandable media slot, and no removable battery - yet makes up for it in being so small that it could quite literally get lost in a pocket. Apple's latest play to gym fanatics and pavement pounders everywhere sacrifices the intuitive interface of the original, but adds to the feature stack as well, with VoiceOver, text-to-speech technology that actually allows the MP3 player to read track titles and artist names aloud to you. There's no question that mountaineering types hoping to strip every ounce off their personal media players will appreciate the Shuffle's ultra-svelte dimensions and weight, but has the company pared too far in its quest for the impossibly slim?"

Sapphire HD 4870 2GB Vapor X Series Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 4:07 PM (EDT)

"To overclock the Sapphire HD4870 2GB Vapor-X edition I started out with ATI's Catalyst Control Center and used the Overdrive tab to increase the GPU and memory clock speeds as well as bumping the fan speed to 100% for the most potential benefit. The core clock speed maximum in the CCC was 800MHz so that seemed like the logical point to start at. The Vapor-X card did this with ease and did not fail in benchmarks or with Futuremark. Since the CCC was limited in the clock speeds that could be set, I next moved to Riva Tuner 2.24 to push the clock speeds higher than the CCC would allow. I pushed upward until I was no longer able to successfully complete gaming tests or pass benchmarks. The maximum where I could run some but not all of the benchmarks was 845MHz on the RV770 core. But with that said, I had to back down the clock speed to 826MHz on the core and 1086MHz on the GDDR5 memory to get full game and benchmark stability back. I was hoping the added cooling capability would offer a significant boost in clock speeds, which is something I did achieve with an increase of 77MHz on the core and 186MHz on the memory all while having a nice cool running card to boot. Maximum temperatures noted while running a 100% fan speed was 58 Celsius."

Gigabyte GV-N96TSL-1GI Geforce 9600GT Rev.B Videocard Review @ PCSTATS.com

Posted by Nathan @ 3:16 PM (EDT)

"This isn't an old 9600GT GPU making a comeback with 1GB of GDDR3 memory, this new Geforce 9600GT graphics card from Gigabyte uses the 'revision B' nVidia 'G94' GPU; it's built with a smaller manufacturing process, has a physically smaller silicon die, uses less power and consequently runs cooler. Reduced power consumption made it possible for Gigabyte engineers to make the GV-N96TSL-1GI Geforce 9600GT videocard completely fanless. Very recently, we reviewed our first RAID 0 SSD, the Titan from G.Skill and in many ways this OCZ version of the Samsung reference design is quite similar to that drive. However, with OCZ being OCZ we fully expect this RAID 0 SSD to have a couple of tricks up its firmware sleeve and it should be interesting to see how it performs in comparison to not only the Titan but the de facto gold standard: Intel's X-25M.

Having owned many "enthusiast" motherboards over the years, I was floored with the number of overclocking features and how incredibly stable this board is. At the time this article was written, there have been 10 BIOS revisions since it first launched, so you can see it has taken a bit to get it to where it is today. That should not take away anything from this motherboard but should go to show that ASUS is dedicated to supporting its customers..."

Palit GeForce GTX 260 Sonic 216SP @ Benchmark Reviews

Posted by Nathan @ 7:20 PM (EDT)

Because of the various factors working against desktop graphics, I'd say that now is the time for manufacturers to stop building a bigger mousetrap, and instead build it better. That's what Palit does, and their approach to discreet graphics products usually follows the rule of function before fashion. In this case, it's function and realistic performance needs before fashion and marketing hype. Sure, NVIDIA would lover for you to believe that SLI is necessary to play the newest video games, but oddly enough the nearly all new games still work fairly well with a single three-generation old video card. So where's the sweet spot? Benchmark Reviews tests the Palit GeForce GTX 260 Sonic 216SP model NE3X262SFT394-PM8026 video card to see just how much money you need to spend to enjoy fast frame rates at high resolution.

AMA Aragon 900 Water Cooling Kit Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 7:19 PM (EDT)

"At stock settings, under both idle and load conditions, AMA's water cooling kit is able to hang out not only with the top end air coolers, but also the custom water cooling loop built out of high end components. Temperatures aren't exactly impressive, but water, just like air, has it's cooling power limited by ambient temperature. So under relatively light loads, there isn't much gain to be had. I thought the tide would turn in favor of AMA when overclocked, but the performance against air coolers isn't all that impressive. At idle, all four unsurprisingly keep the processor around the same temperature. However, this all changes under load. AMA's kit just can't keep up with the custom loop or even Thermalright's cooler. Fortunately, it doesn't claim the last place and is able to shave 3 degrees Celsius off Noctua's flagship heatsink."

“Notebooks have obvious advantages over desktop configurations but also have one drawback: price. Now we can introduce to you two models that overcome that last obstacle that can unsettle you in deciding whether you will go for notebook or desktop. Since screen size does matter if you decide to get a notebook, we found two 17 inch models: Acer eMachines G620 and G520. After first encounter with eMachines notebooks we weren’t that impressed with design but now some things have changed and impression is not that bad. These are still black models made out of average quality plastics but on the other hand with lowest price in their league…”

"I personally replaced an older Fujitsu MHV2060BH 60GB 5400RPM SATA 2.5" hard drive in my laptop that had an average read speed in HD Tune of 32MBps. Not a bad deal considering one of these drives can be purchased online for just $54.99 plus shipping. Coolink Silentator @ Bjorn3D

Posted by Nathan @ 4:17 PM (EDT)

This, once again, goes back to your thinning wallet. Coolink understands your pain, and that is why they have rolled out the Silentator. At only $50 USD, this is one of the cheaper CPU coolers. Generally, with cheapness comes a lack of quality. Will the Silentator, with its cheaper price, be able to outperform the stock AMD heat sink? Moreover, will the Silentator be able to handle the extra heat for those who dare to increase CPU voltage? With a few tests we should be able to determine if this cooler stacks up to others in its price range.
