This review of the Mapower MAP-AL31CS USB 2.0 + eSATA 3.5" External Enclosure was my first introduction to Mapower and any of their products. Lian-Li PC-A08 Classical Series Case Review @ HardwareLogic

Posted by Nathan @ 5:31 PM (EDT)

The Lian-Li branding conjures up images of elegant case design that separates them from the average enclosure. It's only fitting that they should offer a Classical series, a lineup that looks to polish upon the standard rectangular chassis rather than try and reinvent the wheel. Today at HardwareLogic, we look at the Classical PC-A08 with its brushed aluminum and two tone finish, but can it's interior exude the same charm as it's exterior?

What if you are just going away for the weekend or taking a day trip into the city? You don't want to be lugging around a big bag like that. Nexus NX-8060 600-watt True Power Modular pwer Supply Review @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 5:30 PM (EDT)

"Back in the year 2000, a group of heat conductivity and noise reduction experts got together and formed Nexus Technology. Since that time they have become known for their cooling prowess with such products as heat pipe coolers for both processors and chipsets. With the growing diversity of the PC market, however, many companies have spread their knowledge and expertise into other areas. Such is the case with Nexus.

The topic of today's discussion will be the NX8060, a 600W modular power supply that makes claims of being both stingy with your electricity (efficient) and also being very silent. With this company's background, we may be in for some pleasant surprises."

The newest fan offerings from Noctua are real gems! They are quiet (silent, when used with the ULNA,) and move a respectable amount of air. While I hate to make generalizations about such things, these fans exhibit the high quality, innovative features and performance that products from this part of the world are famous for. Noctua has clearly set out to redefine what the future of quiet cooling will be, and if these fans are any indication, they have a very good start.

NZXT Duet Case Review @ OCC

"A computer that is as simple to use as a television set? Just press the “power” button on the remote control and your system is instantly on and ready to use? Not quite, but with so many technological advancements happening every day, this type of system is not very far away. As software and hardware companies continue to push the home PC into the living room of the modern home, it is natural to see computer components that resemble stereo equipment. The Duet is a computer case manufactured by NZXT that has been designed to be used in a home entertainment computer build. This case is very small in comparison to a gaming case and as such, is designed to pack more into a smaller space. As with many other cases made by NZXT, the Duet is very eye catching and stylized to complement an entertainment system or to keep your desk or home office looking up to date."

YouGamers Latest Content - Infernal Review

Posted by Nathan @ 4:32 AM (EDT)

"Etherlight also has a certified mad scientist, secret bases and megalomaniac plots worthy of a James Bond movie, with our fallen angel playing the role of the guy designated to save the day - uncover the plot, find the nutjob leader and blow up secret bases. All in all, while the general concept of playing a fallen angel on a rampage is not bad, the storyline is disjointed and full of implausible twists and plot holes. Some of the script is actually so cheesy that it becomes hilariously funny - Lennox in particular delivers some memorable one-liners. Refreshingly, the story isn't quite as black and white as you'd initially expect, and there is a working surprise or two along the way, and in the end the biggest flaw probably is that the adventure ends up being quite short with just five missions."

DDR-2 vs. DDR-3 Memory – An exhaustive look at the Intel P35 platform @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 4:11 PM (EDT)

"The release of the P35 chipset from Intel has marked DDR-3 memory coming to the mainstream market. While pricey at the moment and not looking all that attractive when it comes to timings, we find ourselves in the same position as at the launch of DDR-2 which came with a high price tag and pretty ordinary looking specs out of the gate.

With a bunch of motherboards along with some DDR-3 memory from our friends at Corsair, we are going to dive in and have a look at exactly what an upgrade to DDR-3 is going to do for us at this point in time but is it worth jumping straight on the bandwagon right now? Maybe we should wait it out for a bit? Is the P35 a worthy upgrade from the P965? This and more will be answered as we look through a number of different setups and benchmarks in this article."

DDR3 FAQ: A new memory standard already? @ OCModShop

Posted by Nathan @ 4:09 PM (EDT)

DDR3 SDRAM or double-data-rate three synchronous dynamic random access memory is the name of the new DDR memory standard that has been developed as the successor to DDR2 SDRAM.

The memory comes with a promise of a power consumption reduction of 40% compared to current commercial DDR2 modules, due to DDR3's 90 nm fabrication technology, allowing for lower operating currents and voltages (1.5 V, compared to DDR2's 1.8 V or DDR's 2.5 V). "Dual-gate" transistors will be used to reduce leakage of current.

But behind all the sparkle and shine, amidst none of the fame of those items is the one piece that makes it all possible; the power supply. Without a rock solid PSU your computer would quickly turn into an unstable beast of burden that at best restarts the computer in the middle of your frag fest and at its worst, dies completely damaging your motherboard and CPU with it. PC Apex Review // NZXT Zero - Aluminum Tower Case

Posted by Nathan @ 4:19 AM (EDT)

"This case supports an amazing seven 120mm fans and two 80mm fans. To top it off, the manufacturer includes 8 of the fans, so you don’t have to break the bank populating them! With nine fans in the system, I was expecting some new competition for my vacuum cleaner. Once again, I was wrong! I was able to hear the noise of my hard drives over the fans, (which brings me back to wanting thicker side panels) so for the normal one or two hard drive install, this case would be exceptionally quiet!

This case was made for a user who has a Dual/SLI Video card setup. There are four 120mm fans on the side of the case that line up to where the video cards would typically sit, surrounding them with an impressive amount of fresh, cool air. My setup is still in the stone ages, I do not have a SLI setup (yet), however I do have a dual processor system which heats up quite nicely."

OCZ Reaper HPC 8500 DDR-2 Memory @ Bjorn3D

Posted by Nathan @ 4:16 AM (EDT)

The latest craze to hit the market over the last few months is the use of heat pipe technology to dissipate heat. This solution when properly designed and implemented coupled with good system airflow is a win-win proposition for all concerned as it is both quiet and effective at battling components' heat production. Recently this solution has transcended from the ranks of larger components such as memory sticks.

Samsung SGH-i710 Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone Review @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 4:15 AM (EDT)

"Samsung is a huge electronics brand and has gained a lot of popularity in the mobile phone market, even though it cannot compete with the giants like Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola, it is still quite amazing how many new models Samsung brings out each year. Today we are having a look at the SGH-i710 which is a Windows Mobile 5 powered handset. Although many Windows Mobile powered devices tend to be quite similar, Samsung has done a fantastic job to make the SGH-i710 stand out from the crowd.

Although the handset we had a look at was the Chinese version, the SGH-i718, overall functionality is the same and so are all the hardware features, the main difference being the language on the handset and some applications. The SGH-i718 has been available on the Chinese market for some time, but the SGH-i710 only became available earlier this year."

Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision SE Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 2:32 PM (EDT)

"Hi grandma, you look great. It seems that that warm climate really agrees with you". With our jobs and hectic schedules, we don’t often have the time to visit or spend quality time with extended family. Although spending one-to-one time with a family member is always the most fulfilling, sometimes it’s just not possible and so we send emails back and forth, or occasionally chat on the phone. There is a solution to those informal greetings and that would be a WebCam. WebCams will allow you to talk and see the person with whom you are greeting, giving more of a feel that you are right there with them. Spending time with Grandma, Grandpa, Mom, Dad or friends is always better, but having a WebCam can take some of the emptiness away when you just can’t get away from the rigours of everyday life. Maybe just seeing their smile will brighten up your day. The Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision Spercial Edition is one of the many choices you will have when considering the purchase of a WebCam. With it comes many standard features including a 4 Megapixel still image capture."

3RSystem M-Station HT-1000 HTPC Chassis @ Viper Lair

Posted by Nathan @ 2:32 PM (EDT)

"The case itself is very attractive to the eye, and designed to fit in with your existing A/V gear; something it manages with aplomb. Available in three colours, the silver model we chose fits in perfectly with its surroundings. Hardware installation needs to be thought out a little but there were no real 'gotchas' caused by the case itself. No sharp edges either, allowing for a pain free installation. The HT-1000 supports both ATX and mATX motherboards and has provision for a full ATX PSU, allowing you to build a high powered system, perhaps for some large screen gaming."

Go Video 7" All-In-One Music and Movie System Review @ Bigbruin.com

While I could generate a list of complaints regarding missing features (such as no headphone jack, lack of MP4/DivX support, no component input), I am really impressed by the Go Video 7" All-In-One Music and Movie System. It has a bright, vibrant screen, and a small form factor which allows it to be used in settings where larger, more traditional systems might not fit or be appropriate.

Gaming Heaven Review: Tony Hawk's Project 8 (PS3)

Posted by Nathan @ 2:28 PM (EDT)

Throughout the years sports games evolved from the classic soccer and basketball simulations. While Pro Evolution Soccer and NBA Live still have the biggest player base, some of the more radical games still managed to break through. The SSX snowboarding series comes to mind, or the even more of the hook basketball arcade franchise NBA Street. What is the thing that all of these games have in common that separates them from their more serious cousins? Tricks. Leg-breaking, jaw-dropping, I-eat-1080's-for-breakfast tricks. And it was none other than Tony Hawk with his Pro Skater game that started this.

Neoseeker's Bearlake "P35" Launch Coverage and Gigabyte P35-DS3R Review

Posted by Nathan @ 2:27 PM (EDT)

"Intel is making the move to DDR3 in order to allow easier scaling to higher memory speeds in the near future - as well as reduce the power consumption of the memory subsystem.

DDR3, largely due to operating at lower voltages, is expected to consume 25% less power at the same speed; therefore a DDR3-1333 module consumes approximately the same ammount of power as a DDR2-800 module. The reduced heat output and power consumption are welcome side benefits, especially with higher energy costs and environmental concerns."

Intel's P35 Express Chipset Release Coverage @ TechReport

Posted by Nathan @ 2:27 PM (EDT)

As much as we love the P965, its 1066MHz front-side bus is ill-equipped to handle the next generation of Core 2 processors. Those new chips will ride a 1333MHz front-side bus, and in preparation for their arrival, Intel has created the P35 Express chipset, otherwise known as Bearlake. The P35 Express features native support for 1333MHz front-side bus speeds, and it's compatible with future processors built using 45nm process technology. More interestingly, it's also the first core logic chipset to offer support for DDR3 memory.

Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS & GT Performance @ Techspot

The GeForce 8800 GTX was significantly faster than anything available at the time, and even today it still holds the performance crown for Nvidia. Also cut-down 8800 GTS versions were also very impressive and soon became favourites amongst gamers. However, only a small percentage of gamers can afford to drop over $300 on a graphics card. This means the real battle, the battle of sales, takes place at the more affordable $200 - and below - price range.

Intel P35 Bearlake And DDR3 Memory Launch @ HotHardware.com

Posted by Nathan @ 2:55 AM (EDT)

Although information has been floating around for ages and product hit the channel sooner than expected, today is actually the day Intel is officially unleashing their newest mainstream desktop chipset, the P35, a member of the formerly codenamed “Bearlake” family. In addition to a new Southbridge, the P35 chipset ushers in support for DDR3 system memory in the desktop. It also supports legacy DDR2 memory, depending on the motherboard’s DIMM slot configuration.

We’ve taken a pair of brand-new P35-based motherboards from Asus for a spin with both DDR2 and DDR3 memory installed. As you’ll see, thanks to some relatively high latencies currently, DDR3 doesn’t affect performance all that much. It sure is great for overclocking though!

How to Professionally Repair DVDs Without Spending $500 @ OCModShop

Posted by Nathan @ 2:52 AM (EDT)

There are many consumer CD/DVD repair kits out on the market today (Disc Washer, Disc Doctor, Memorex OptiFix Pro, etc), and they are all pretty much the same devices. Whether electronic or hand-cranked, these devices consist of a mechanical spindle and two buffing/cleaning pads. So what makes an expensive one worth the extra money? I've used several that work decently, and others that don't seem to help at all. The commercial disc cleaner at my neighborhood GameStop returns discs to a like-new finish in just a few minutes, but professional units like this cost over $500.

CoolMax LCD Power Supply Tester Review @ OCIA.net

Posted by Nathan @ 4:44 PM (EDT)

"A while ago I reviewed a power supply tester, and while I found the unit useful, I also mentioned it would be nice to be able to determine the exact voltage outputs rather than a simple pass/fail. Today I am reviewing a tester from CoolMax that offers exactly that... an LCD that displays exact voltage outputs for each of the different rails. CoolMax advertises this tester to be accurate to within +/- 0.1V and with all outputs displayed to the tenth of a volt we can infer the unit is simply rounding up or down. Not quite the accuracy of a digital multimeter but certainly easier and faster to use."

Diskeeper 2007 Review @ PCReview.co.uk

Posted by Nathan @ 4:44 PM (EDT)

"The question still remains whether defragmentation actually improves disk performance though. My own experience is that it does. Having said that, I had to let my hard disk fragment for at least six months before I actually noticed any lack of performance. De-fragging did actually put a 'sparkle' back into my system. And if Microsoft didn't consider defragmentation to be a desired thing they wouldn't have included the function within Windows. And whilst I've mentioned Windows, it's worth noting that Diskeeper will defrag your drives in a fraction of the time Microsoft's built-in software takes to do it. "

Nintendo DS Lite Impressions @ ThinkGaming.org

Posted by Nathan @ 4:43 PM (EDT)

“I know the DS lite has been out for a long while now, but I really never had the chance to play one for a long period of time. I’m not a real big handheld gamer, more or less because I don’t really travel that much and I’m not out a lot for me to have free time to play handhelds. Back in November I received a Sony PSP to review on ThinkComputers. I really liked it and thought it was really cool. I picked up a few games and it served me well. Sad thing is I haven’t touched it since my trip to Las Vegas in January. Maybe it’s the lack of good games, I mean there are a few good games (Lumines, GTA, etc), but you can only play those games so much. So after thinking about it I went ahead and sold my PSP and went out and got a Nintendo DS Lite. I really could not justify having 2 handheld systems, and with the announcement of Sim City and amazing screenshots from Zelda Phantom Hourglass I had to get a DS Lite.”
