We’ve just posted a new article at HotHardware in which we evaluate the build quality, advanced features, and performance of the Synology Cube Station CS407. This do-it-yourself NAS device and server comes configured "bare-bones", ready for installation of up to four SATA hard disks with RAID 0, 1 and 5 capabilities. In addition to its compact form-factor and clean lines, Synology's CS407 provides product differentiation through support for a multitude of cross-platform features like UPnP MultiMedia support, iTunes server functionality, a Web Server with PHP and MySQL support and even an integrated photo management system called PhotoStation2 that has a decidedly "flickr-like" look and feel to it. Anyone in the market for a feature rich network attached storage device should check this article out… |
Corsair DOMINATOR 2GB DDR3-1800 Memory Kit Review @ PCSTATS.com |
Posted by Nathan @ 4:24 PM (EDT) |
Enthusiasts and Corsair go together like milk and cookies, and as expected Corsair is one of the first manufacturers to actually get its DDR3 memory modules to the market. Corsair's 2GB DOMINATOR Twin3X2048-1800C7D DDR3 memory kit is wicked fast, but that speed comes with a very high price tag: $784 CDN ($744 US, £371 GBP). Compared to what we're used to seeing from ultra high end enthusiast grade DDR2, it's pricey. Compared to a similar class of high end DDR3 memory on the market, it's actually quite comparable. |

In this review I'm taking a closer look at the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad power supply. There are three flavors of this PSU: Black, Copper and a red CrossFire Edition. Besides the different color these units are identical, they all have a continuous maximum output of 750W with a peak output of 825W and a max of 60A on the +12V rail. The Silencer 750W PSU ships in a rather unattractive box. When I received this product I expected to find another box inside the one you can see on the photo but that wasn't the case. I was a bit worried that the PSU might have been damaged during shipping when I saw that one of the corners was punctured but fortunately the PSU was well protected. |
Mushkin HP-580AP 580W Enhanced Power Supply Review @ Bigbruin.com |

Finding a modular power supply that can handle a multi-GPU system can be a little tough, but the Mushkin HP-580AP 580W Enhanced Power Supply seems capable of handling just about any of the latest video cards. And with RailFusion, the system can combine the multiple 12V rails into one if it happens to need more than the 20 Amps provided on a single 12V rail. |

"While I was performing the testing, there were some things that came up that were not related to speed, transfer times, or anything technical. For instance, a few things are a little annoying about the unit, including the power button and the LCD display. To even see what is on the LCD, an almost 30 degree tilt is needed. This is so bad, that the first time I looked at the unit, I thought that I had a defective one. The power button also has some small things that irked me. To power the unit on, a simple press will not do. The button has to be held down for a period of about half a second, then released before the unit will power up. Everything else about the unit was very satisfactory." |

"Laptop hard drives are now being used in external enclosures instead of traditional 3.5" drives for a number of reasons. These drives are much smaller and generate less heat and noise than 3.5" drives. Write speed and capacity limitations were once a point of concern for laptop drives, but that is now a thing of the past. Today I will be looking at the Tagan Icy Box IB-266StUS-B, an external 2.5" drive enclosure that offers a variety of connection configurations and flexibility." |

"Models BE-2300 and BE-2350 are something of a "low-power" replacement for models X2 3600+ and X2 4000+. While they have higher frequency and lower power consumption, this, of course, isn't enough to beat the competition. AMD seems to be well-aware of that, so this processor's target market isn't overclockers, but office and home users, to whom CPU performance is hardly on the list of priorities." |

"One area that the HIS Radeon HD 2600 PRO IceQ 512MB shines in is it's Multi-media capabilities. Two Gold plated (with black inlay) Dual Link DVI ports and an included ATI DVI to HDMI adapter are just the start of a great card for High Definition HTPC duty, and offers an air of stack system hi-fi authority in appearance. The UVD (Universal Video Decoder) Engine makes light work of H.264 and (apparently) VC-1, which means you don't need a killer CPU for video decoding; the cheaper video card can do most of the work and let you put the extra cash towards paying for an expensive Blu-ray or less expensive HD-DVD drive." |
Microsoft Windows Vista & ReadyBoost: Does it Make a Difference? @ PCSTATS.com |

For instance, Microsoft Windows Vista load up times with 512MB of system memory and no ReadyBoost was ~47 seconds. When equipped with a 2GB ReadyBoost USB drive, boot time was cut down by 7 seconds. It was also quite a surprise to see that ReadyBoost boosted framerates of Doom 3 and FEAR when the system was running 512MB of memory. |

There is another thing that I value above the music and that sound quality. I hate having to listen to music without some depth; some nice clarity to be able to hear every stroke and glide cross the strings of a guitar, and the pounding bass drum of a rock song. Of course I take my music with me wherever I go on my mp3 player, but I want something better than the average headphones you get with a media player. |

"SSHH! Now if you promise not to tell, I’ll let you in on a secret. Like any enthusiast, when we build or upgrade our systems, either our wives or girlfriends get the hand-me-downs. Even though we feel that we are being generous, they still consider it a second hand product. It doesn’t matter that the case, video card or processor you gave her was once the best on the market, it’s still a hand-me-down. Well I found a solution to the problem. Apevia (formally Aspire) is producing a compact case called the X-QPack 2 and it comes in an assortment of different colors. Including pink. So what I did was, I got the pretty pink case, just for her. Now since she has something that she can relate to and it is hers, I could basically replace any component and not have to deal with the "all you give me are hand-me-downs" effect." |

Crucial DDR2-800 2GB Memory Kit (CT12864AA80E.16FD) @ TheTechLounge |
Posted by Nathan @ 3:08 AM (EDT) |
“We're getting into the hardware reviews something fierce, and now is a good time to start a series of memory articles. Let's begin with the basics: DDR2-800. Also known as PC2 6400 RAM, 800MHz DDR2 is the most common memory standard, which balances tight timings and high bandwidth perfectly. And because DDR2-800 is universal to AMD and Intel alike, it sets the baseline against which all other RAM is compared. In the spirit of introducing this series on RAM, I've reviewed the plainest, greenest, no-frills, all-stock DDR2 I could find: Crucial's 2x1GB non-Ballistix DDR2-800 kit. And I was very pleased by it.” |

Serial ATA optical drives are now readily available, and the timing couldn't be better as motherboards are quickly loosing the last vestiges of the IDE connector. Parallel IDE has been on the outs forever, but optical drives have only recently adopted SATA to replace it. For the longest time Plextor was the only optical drive manufacturer that offered SATA DVD and CD-ROM drives. Those drives were priced at three to four times what regular optical drives cost... but now it's easy to find an Serial ATA optical drive for under $40. Newer, faster, cheaper - that's the PC industry! |

Everyday I see more people talking on cell phones with wireless hands-free devices, but the days of having a wire attached to your phone to have a hands free conversation are almost gone. Most people have retired their wires and now just talk on their phones or use Bluetooth headsets. Introducing the FreeStyler 600 Bluetooth V2.0 headset, SOYO has made a product that is easy to use and is compatible with any Bluetooth enabled cell phone. Currently, the majority of newer cell phones are equipped to handle Bluetooth devices, making Bluetooth hands-free headsets an option for most. The 6000+ is less expensive than its Intel counterparts has a higher clock speed right out of the box and performs within a margin of error in most benchmarks, even though it has half the L2 cache and only has a FSB of 200 MHz opposed to Intels 266 and 333 MHz. So if you are an end user looking for performance and price this should not be overlooked." |

It was almost a year ago when Benchmark Reviews first witnessed 1.0 kilowatt power supply units on the market. Around that same time, people were testing their SLi and CrossFire setups, and with rumor of Quad-SLi later becoming a reality it seemed like everyone would be using this much power into the future. Looking back, I am thankful the motherboard manufacturers essentially killed this idea, since it really seems rediculous to need four video cards for anything. Vantec USB External 5.1 Audio Adapter Review @ Virtual-Hideout |
Posted by Nathan @ 3:21 PM (EDT) |
“The Vantec 5.1 audio adapter isn't for everyone. If you already have a soundcard in your system capable of outputting 5.1 channels, you probably won't need this, which adds another external device to the mix. However, if you have a laptop or other portable system, most of which only have stereo outputs, this adapter will be helpful, especially if you watch movies a lot and would like to take full advantage of your 5.1 speaker system. Watching movies with a full 5.1 channels is far better than listening to them in down-converted stereo mode. This is the audio adapter's intended use, as it quickly and easily adds 5.1 output support to any system, and does it well.” |

With the name, "Silent Whisper" I truly expected a silent or near silent cooling option. The Sunbeam cooler does okay in the noise department but under power it neither operates as silent or at a whisper. The second issue is more one of aesthetics. The welding on the base looked like it was done eight beers into a twelve pack to me. However, under load, the Sunbeam Silent Whisper showed that while the weld looked bad, it performed well. This $13 cooler made a fair showing that certainly gets a nod overall. |
