Cooljag Falcon 92-CU Heatsink Review @ Frostytech.com

Posted by Nathan @ 2:08 PM (EDT)

"The Cooljag Falcon 92-Cu is identical to the Falcon 92-AL heatsink, except that it uses all copper fins where the later has fins of aluminum. Both versions use a 92mm fan that is internally illuminated with a couple green LEDs. To minimize the noise produced by the fan spinning unnecessarily fast, it is thermally controlled by a small thermistor that senses case air temperature. "

Thermaltake Toughpower 1000watt Modular PSU Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 2:03 PM (EDT)

"Power, we all think we have enough when it comes to our computers. With the increasing performance and power consumption of todays latest and greatest hardware, the lowly power supply is often an overlooked component. We don't hesitate to spend two or three thousand dollars on hardware, but then we'll skimp on a sixty dollar, 500 watt power supply thinking it will be fine. Then we get upset when the computer doesn't perform to our expectations and we have reboots, BSOD's and other random issues. With 1000 watts of continuous power, the Toughpower 1000 should handle everything I can throw at it. It boasts such features as +/-3% power regulation, up to 87% efficiency, four independent, dedicated 12v rails and a 140mm fan (yes boys and girls that's right, a 140mm fan) to cool down this beast."

PowerColor Radeon X1950 Pro SCS Review @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 3:00 AM (EDT)

"You would think that the Radeon X1950PRO would just about be discontinued, with the new mid-range graphics cards from Nvidia offering Direct X 10 and the HD 2600 just around the corner, why would you even bother looking at the AMD DX9 counterpart?

Well the new Nvidia cards come with an increased price tag and do not seem to offer the punch that the last generations do in DX 9 games. If you are not looking at jumping onto the DX 10 bandwagon straight away the X1950PRO and 7900GS are still very real examples of mid-range graphics cards you would consider buying."

The screenshots above were taken with the DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 versions of the Lost Planet demo running on GeForce 8800 GTX using the latest Windows Vista drivers available from NVIDIA. The game was configured for a resolution of 1280x720, with 8X anti-aliasing and 16X anisotropic filtering enabled. If you flip through the screenshots and compare the two versions, you'll see that visually they don't differ very much at all. The motion blur effect is more pronounced in the DX10 shots and it gives the game a more realistic look that's not conveyed well over still captures. Other than that, those of you with DX9-class video cards really aren't missing out on much, if anything at all with this title.

Using ATI and NVIDIA Video Cards To Make A Sauna @ Legit Reviews

Posted by Nathan @ 2:55 AM (EDT)

"Both the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 series and ATI Radeon HD 2900 series were found to have an exhaust air temperature of 49C-56C, which is enough to heat up a small office, bedroom or dorm room very quickly. It's interesting to see just how hot these cards are getting and with both ATI and NVIDIA promoting multiple GPU solutions just imagine running a pair of any of these cards is a small room for an extended period of time. It's obvious that the GPU is now the leading cause of heat in a computer system, but what can be done about it?"

Albatron 8600GTS @ Bjorn3D

Posted by Nathan @ 2:54 AM (EDT)

Back in November 2006 everything changed with the release of a new style of video card. I say new style because it left behind everything we have come to expect from video cards at the time. Pixel and texture shaders were replaced with stream processors, no longer would you have to choose between Anti-aliasing and HDR, and picture quality would never be the same from the green team. The 8800 series had arrived and it brought with it a great many advancements in video card technology of which the most heralded was DirectX 10. It also brought with it a hefty price tag many people could not justify spending on a single component for their computer. So for some time these advancements were out of reach for many of us as we gazed upon amazing scores of 3DMark and watched as frame rates climbed ever higher. Well, now it's time for the rest of us to have some fun! Enter the 8600 series GPU from Nvidia.

GT3-BH Case Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 2:54 AM (EDT)

"A desirable feature of a LAN PC would be for it to be small enough to carry around. That is exactly what I have to review in the form of a GT3 made by the GTR Tech Corporation. In fact, not only is it small, it is light and comes with a built in handle made for carrying it. Now, you may be saying,” yes, the micro cases do that too”. Well, this case has a rather large advantage as it is the only MicroATX size case that will accommodate a full size ATX motherboard! You are no longer restricted by the rather lame feature set of a MicroATX motherboard, the restricted expansion options, or the often behind-the-times chipsets on them. Another thing, many of the pre-fabbed SFF cases use a proprietary motherboard that is not user replaceable when the chipset in it becomes too outdated. This case will accept most of the latest, newest, and fastest ATX motherboards on the market. That alone makes this case quite future-proof, so you can use it over and over in your builds. Not only that, it will take a full height PCI-express VGA card up to 235 mm in length; this includes the cards based on the nVidia Geforce 8800 GTS GPU, which would make this one powerful PC to haul into a LAN party! A few cards will exceed this length, especially the 8800 GTX cards."

PC Apex Review // Super Talent 2GB PC2-8000 RAM Kit

Posted by Nathan @ 2:18 PM (EDT)

"I started off by trying to find my maximum CPU FSB so I set the multiplier to 6 and worked my way up from 320MHz to 410MHz before the first crash. I couldn't get it any further than 408MHz stable, regardless of whether I dropped the multi to 5 or not. Keep in mind that this was with stock timings of 5-5-5-15. I didn't loosen timings until later, when I ran into the poof! monster. RAM frequency at this point was only 984MHz anyway and I knew there was more to come with stock timings alone.

Next, I traveled through the various multipliers searching for a max stable CPU speed for this RAM and ended up with 2.85GHz. Not bad, but I was expecting over 3.0GHz like I had gotten with my 3800+ single core CPU. Perhaps this was due to the CPU being a low power version, but I am not certain. It could always just be a less desirable stepping."

DH Review: Spire Bergwind II

Spire have released several cases recently and the Bergwind II is one of their most cost-effective. Even before we received it for evaluation, we knew that it is not a case that can compete against any enthusiast chassis (it costs less than a third of the money) but it is not meant for that reason at all. It is a case suitable for building a typical office system, a normal home PC or for OEM use; not for housing a $3000 high end gaming monster.

RyderMark Beta 2 Preview - Emerging competition for Futuremark? @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 2:14 PM (EDT)

"But what is RyderMark and what makes it different from say 3DMark06? Well, let us try to break things down. We will start with what it is not and that is a DirectX 10 benchmark. However, a DirectX 10 version should be coming out at a later stage. What it is on the other hand is rather interesting; Candella Software, the company behind RyderMark, claims that it is based on a real game engine. Now that sounds familiar, anyone want to give the guys over at Futuremark a call and see what games use their engine?

Anyhow, what we have got here is a very advanced benchmark that allows you to test a whole range of new features that have so far not been available. It can test features such as Parallel Occlusion Mapping, a very advanced form of Bump Mapping and it supports 32- and 64-bit HDR Lighting with Anti-Aliasing. Furthermore it does Shader model 2.0 and 3.0, Soft Shadows, Normal Mapping, Soft Particles, Full Scene Motion Blur, Depth-of-Field, Heat Haze, Volumetric Fire and Realistic Water Physics, although we have to say that some of those features do not look that impressive, at least not on the graphics card we tested with. If you have played Supreme Commander you will think the water and fire sucks, but I guess the engine used is already getting outdated. The smoke effects did not look that amazing either."

HIS HD2900XT VGA Review @ OverclockerCafe

Posted by Nathan @ 4:50 PM (EDT)

ATi has indeed offered an nice product with its R600 VGA card. HIS has brought it to market exactly as ATi intended with no modifications in cooling or performance boosts (HIS's 'Turbo'.) I make this preface so I can lay responsibility where responsibility is due. Yes, this is a card we can recommend however, it does not feel like a polished product just yet. Some of the polish will come from individual manufacturers getting away from the reference design and some will come in the form of driver improvements letting us squeeze a bit more out of this card. A nice card but not the lunge and parry back at NVidia that we expected.

Asus EN8800GTS/HTDP/320M Geforce 8800GTS Videocard Review @ PCSTATS.com

Posted by Nathan @ 4:40 PM (EDT)

In this review PCSTATS tests the awesome Asus EN8800GTS/HTDP/320M PCI Express videocard. This Geforce 8800GTS-320 lives up to the hype, and comes with one of the best software packages available for its class. In the box is a full copy of Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, which just happens to be one of the hottest shooter titles of 2006. The game looks particularly splendid when played over the Asus EN8800GTS/HTDP/320M videocard too. Take my advice, turn up the resolution to 1600x1200 and kick in AA and AF to get the full affect.

Seagate ST 3500641AS 500GB HD @ MHW

Posted by Nathan @ 4:39 PM (EDT)

"The Seagate ST 3500641AS has a SATA connector only, so if you have an older power supply check that it has a SATA connector before buying this drive. Next while this new drive was fairly quiet, it was definitely louder than my previous drive (particularly during avg access tests) which was completely inaudible inside my case over my system fans. I am not sure I would choose the Seagate ST 3500641AS if I was building a HTPC."

A190A2-T08 19" TFT LCD Widescreen Monitor Review @ Bigbruin.com

Posted by Nathan @ 1:44 PM (EDT)

Overall I am extremely impressed with the performance of the A190A2-T08 19" TFT LCD Widescreen Monitor and really only have two rather small things to complain about. The first complaint is the poor quality of the built in stereo speakers and the second complaint is with the lack of an adjustable support stand/base.

MSI GeForce NX8800GTX OC Liquid – Water cooling vs. the 8800 Ultra @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 1:43 PM (EDT)

"We have not seen MSI venture to water cooled cards before and the 8800 GTX is still of a bit of an untapped market for this. Asus has an Aqua model which uses the aging Tide Water system from Thermaltake. This particular system is not too quiet, takes up a load of room, and is generally pretty inefficient. The only other company to have a water cooled card is BFG Tech but its version is a bit more hardcore, it is only for people who already have a water cooled system in their case.

MSI on the other hand seems to use its own design which unlike the Tide Water looks to cool everything from the GPU to the memory and unlike the BFG Tech is an all in one system making it a good option for people who do not really know what they are doing."

ECS AMD690GM-M2 @ Bjorn3D

Posted by Nathan @ 1:41 PM (EDT)

For a long time NVIDIA's nForce chipset was the chipset to have if you were using AMD CPU's. True, there were some alternatives including a few chipsets from ATI, but they did not have much of a chance in pushing NVIDIA away from the AMD chipset top spot. This all changed when AMD bought ATI. While NVIDIA pledged to continue to support the AMD platform it quickly became obvious that their focus shifted to the Intel platform. This left AMD with a problem. It left them with a void. After a partner that has been providing the foundation for your CPU's and also been a large part of the success for those CPUs leaves a void, how do you fill that void?

Casebuy LCD EZ Power Supply Tester 3 Review @ Benchmark Reviews

Posted by Nathan @ 1:39 PM (EDT)

When I first began repairing computers, power supply units caused me the most problems. When a PSU begins to fail, or is faulty out of the box, it is sometimes difficult to determine because the symptoms are similar to other faulty hardware components. One of the best investments I ever made was the PSU tester; until now. CaseBuy now offers a digital LCD display on the EZ Power Supply Tester III. Benchmark Reviews shows you just how important this tool is, and why every technician, overclocker, enthusiast, and even gamers could benefit.

NZXT Precise 1000W Power Supply Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 1:38 PM (EDT)

"If you are anything like me I tend to keep components like my power supply and case for much longer than I will keep the other internal components, like the motherboard or RAM. So when choosing the power supply, I always try to get the best of what’s available at the time of purchase, to reduce the chances of having to change it in less than a couple of years. As with most other components in today’s market, you have a wide variety of products to choose from. Power supplies range from 200W to 1200W and are continuing to increase in output and available options. NZXT is a relatively new player in the market of cases and now power supplies. The Precise 1000W is one of the newest power supplies that it has to offer."

Neoseeker ATI HD 2900 XT Review

Posted by Nathan @ 1:35 PM (EDT)

"Probably the most important factor going into purchasing a new video card is value and pricing. From our benchmarking results, we can conclude that the 2900XT will outperform the GeForce GTS 640MB in some cases and lose in some others. To say whether one is better than the other right now would be neglecting the fact that none of our games are DX10 compatible, in fact no games are DX10 compatible currently (although the world's first downloadable DX10 playable demo will be available this or next week, which ups the ante quite a bit). So what we can take into account is value. From a bundling standpoint alone, the 2900XT has several package items that will be of value to most if not all people buying the card. The gaming voucher from Valve will allow you to play all three new releases from the giant game developer and apparently a fourth game, Day of Defeat: Source, will also be part of the voucher as well. All of these games are produced off the Source engine and have historic backgrounds (minus portal). Secondly the HDMI converter is a sweet addition which works in tandem with the on-chip audio controller to carry both audio and video feeds. If anything is lacking for the G80 series right now it is HDMI availability."

YouGamers Latest Content - Top 10 Scariest Games

Posted by Nathan @ 1:33 PM (EDT)

"Just outside the top 10 were a couple of classics that should have gained a few more votes to be honest - how the Cradle level in Thief 3 achieved a mere handful of nominations is beyond me. Poking its undead nose in at 11th place was Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines and the mission which involved a wee investigation of a derelict hotel. Simple, classic and very tense in places, it's a real shame that it didn't quite make it. Completely missing from the list altogether are superb moments such as the appearance of the T-Rex in Tomb Raider - shame on you!"

Antec P182 Case Review @ HardwareLogic

Posted by Nathan @ 1:48 PM (EDT)

"We see it all the time; a company puts out a product on the verge of greatness, but ultimately hampered by a few deal-breaking flaws. Such was the case (giggle) with Antec's P180, a quiet enclosure that suffered from a poor blueprint for cable management. They've heard your complaints, and the redesigned P182 attempts to be what the P180 should have all along. Can they pull it off, or should Antec have stuck to the drawing board just a bit longer?"

YouGamers Latest Content - Spider-Man 3 (PC) Review

Posted by Nathan @ 1:46 PM (EDT)

"Spider-Man 3 requires a Shader Model 3 videocard, and while the box states Radeon X1300 and GeForce 7300 as minimum examples, they are not really viable cards to run the game. In our testing, a NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT was the cheapest card that could reach playable frame rates with everything set to minimum. Spider-Man 3 caps the frame rate at 30fps (most likely due to its Xbox 360 origins), and in practice if the rate dips much from that, things rapidly degenerate to an unplayable slideshow."

XFX 680i LT SLI Motherboard Review @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 9:45 AM (EDT)

"Nvidia also only released one chipset in its nForce 500 series for Intel, however, since it was based on the older, poorly overclocking nForce 4 SPP northbridge, Nvidia quickly dumped 500 series for Intel, which gave birth to nForce 600i series chipsets. Today there are four chipsets in the 600i series, 680i SLI, 680i LT SLI, 650i SLI and 650i Ultra in order from high-end to value.

nForce 680i SLI while offering the best features and performance also costs an arm and a leg for just the board, leaving little in the budget for a high-end CPU. Nvidia has however come to the rescue with a slightly cut down version of the 680i SLI, the LT SLI series."

Tt Toughpower 1200w PSU Review @ Overclockercafe

Posted by Nathan @ 9:44 AM (EDT)

In the end, the pros far outweigh the cons. If your case can take the 200mm depth of the unit, the only thing left is the price. With a MSRP of $385, the Tt Toughpower is priced right in line with the rest of the field. Many of the competition's units don't offer half as many features let alone do the work quietly as the 140mm low speed high flow fan does. The shopper looking at this unit will be someone with a need to power big ticket items who won't skimp where it counts with regards to power.
