Transcend 2.5-Inch 32GB Solid State Drive Review @ OCIA.net

Posted by Nathan @ 4:25 PM (EDT)

"One product category that has grown rapidly in popularity recently is the Solid State Drive or SSD. By using an array of flash memory chips grouped together in a standard-sized enclosure, the SSD offers several benefits over a traditional hard disk drive. For one, they have no moving parts, so they operate completely free of noise. They also produce very little heat, which should make them ideal for use in tight spaces where cooling is a concern, like laptops and other portables. Their greater tolerance for vibration and shock are also a boon for notebook use, as is their lighter weight."

ASUS TOP 512MB GeForce 9600GT Graphics Card Review @ Bigbruin.com

While the saying is that you get what you paid for, I think you might get a little extra with the ASUS TOP 512MB GeForce 9600GT. While you could easily spend three, four, or five times as much to have the latest and greatest video card, if you are satisfied with "really good" performance and a fatter wallet in the end, the ASUS TOP 512MB GeForce 9600GT is a good choice.

bit-tech News: Asus CrossHair II Formula Motherboard

Posted by Nathan @ 4:23 PM (EDT)

The original CrossHair was great, at the time, but we feel the CrossHair II is one to miss. I think Asus has done what it can with what Nvidia and AMD has handed over, but ultimately there are better products elsewhere that can be had for a fraction of the price. The swanky pants Republic of Gamer board might do a lot of things pretty well, but nothing spectacularly like you'd expect. It feels decidedly average at the end of the day, and we don't drop £150 on an average product.

Top Socket 1366 Heatsink Questions Answered @ Frostytech.com

In the mean time, answers to questions like: 1). Will current Intel socket 775 heatsinks fit on Intel socket 1366 motherboards? 3). Do Nehalem socket 1366 heatsinks use the plastic push pin clips, or something new? 2). If I use a socket 775-to-1366 adaptor bracket to make my existing Intel heatsink fit onto a Socket 1366 motherboard, is that okay? "

NZXT Sentry LX Fan Controller Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 4:21 PM (EDT)

"Compared to its predecessor the Sentry 1, the LX can control three more fans and gather two more temperature readings. It's a good thing, because nowadays, cases tend to have more and more fans. The fact that it occupies two drive bays instead of one allows for a bigger screen to display all of the information at the same time. So you don't need to push any buttons to see the information you want, something that you needed to do with the Sentry 1."

PowerColor HD4870 @ Bjorn3D

Posted by Nathan @ 4:20 PM (EDT)

A few weeks ago the world was greeted to a sight many people only read about. The sight I am referring to is the dead coming back to life. No I'm not talking about the next Robert Rodriguez joint. I am talking about the rebirth of ATI and their return to the forefront of PC gaming. In an event that took the world, and NVIDIA, by surprise ATI unleashed their HD 4800 series of cards upon us. With performance levels far surpassing the previous generation and coming in at a price reserved for lesser cards, is it any wonder ATI was able to return to their former glory overnight?

Thermaltake BlacX eSATA & USB 2.0 Dock @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 4:20 PM (EDT)

"I have already taken a look at the BlacX USB and BlacX SE which is also a USB only desktop drive device. The Thermaltake BlacX units have started a new class in hard drive storage. You can’t really call them carriers since you don’t take them with you on the go, nor can you call them internal hot swap since they do not sit inside the case. I guess for now, until someone tells me differently we will call them desktop hot swap devices.

The first two USB only BlacX units we looked at performed brilliantly for USB. In the back of my mind, though, I knew the transfer performance was being held up by the connection and recommended to everyone to just hang tight and wait until the eSATA version became available. Today we have this version in hand; the BlacX (part number ST0005U) with eSATA support has finally made its way to my door step and even though I have other articles that need to be written up first, I just had to see how this baby performs."

Audio-Technica ATH-CK7 Canal Headphones Reviewed @ TheTechLounge

Posted by Nathan @ 5:02 PM (EDT)

"So, are they truly studio-quality? Eh, if you had a studio you wouldn't put up with the sweepingly uneven amplification. You can compensate for it, and get some very impressive sound from these ATH-CK7s--rolls off the tongue, don't it?--but then they're going to be tied to whatever device you've got them plugged into. I can't use these with both my media player and my PC, because once I switch from my PC speakers, I have to reset my equalizer. And they would be a total waste if my media player didn't have a multi-band, customizable equalizer. There's no preset in the world that can correct for these babies."

Mtron Pro 7500 32GB SATA-II SSD MSP-SATA7525 @ BmR

Posted by Nathan @ 4:34 AM (EDT)

Solid State Drives have become a subject of keen familiarity for Benchmark Reviews over the past year. After testing more than a dozen SSDs, I have watched the industry opinion of these cutting-edge products sway from luxury item to performance hardware necessity. While it cannot be denied that SSDs are still a pricey gadget best suited for the affluent enthusiast, there have been so many new developments that now cost is sharply on the decline while performance is continually rising. With prices being much more affordable, and performance having surpassed the best HDD products long ago, it all boils down to a good price-to-performance ratio. In this article Benchmark Reviews tests the premium MSP-SATA7525 SATA-II SSD from Mtron, a company that has become the grandfather of Solid State Drives. We dispel the myths associates with SSD products, and prove that Intel's ICH10 controller is still not ready for Solid State Drive performance.

Palit Radeon HD 4870 X2 Video Card Review @ Motherboards.org

Posted by Nathan @ 3:59 PM (EDT)

There is nothing to balk about with this release, even the price is not overtly overboard from an out of gate newcomer X2 series card as the 4870 X2 will even out price wise at about $500.00 US, and that's not too out of line for what the card offers and represents. Most cards lately from either ATI or NVIDIA have been overpriced, usually in the over $600.00 range and that really puts the card out of the reach of most people's budgets. $500.00 for the top of the line card when it hits the streets is reasonable in today's PC market where top of the line CPUs are $1200.00, motherboards $400.00 and 4GB ofDDR3 memory are $300.00 as these are the major components that make up your gaming computer. Palit and ATI together have a solid winning victory in the new Radeon HD 4870 X2 card, it a serious Editor's Choice product for anyone who is serious about their game.

TRENDnet 200Mbps Powerline Network Kit Review @ Tweaktown

Posted by Nathan @ 3:55 PM (EDT)

"Wireless networking technology is evolving rather rapidly with 802.11n Draft 2 Wi-Fi currently being the standard of choice when going out to the store and picking up the latest router. If you are in the right place, you also have the choice of connecting your devices to the outside world via 3G or faster HSDPA 3.5G and beyond. If you are really in the right place, you might have the option to use WiMAX. Wireless technology is a wonderful technology and it is really pushing radio to extreme limits.

What happens, though, when wireless isn’t appropriate for your home or office? Maybe wireless isn’t an option due to other devices interfering or the range you are trying to work with is just pushing it too much. Of course, there is the CAT5e or CAT6 networking cable option for local Gigabit networking, but if your house or office isn’t new and not connected up with this cabling, it can be rather messy having cables running around all over your floors."

"So, would we buy the Silent Pro 700W? It certainly takes precedent over the now ageing but still hugely popular Corsair HX series, though when you compare it to the Dark Power Pro 650W it doesn't quite cut it. Don't get us wrong though, it's still an excellent purchase if you don't want a Be Quiet!, but be prepared to throw out the craptacular rubber surround because it can survive without it. On the whole, it feels like a very good product, but one attempting to be better than it is, albeit made up by a good price."

Sapphire HD 4870 X2 Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 3:54 PM (EDT)

"Most of the video cards I have looked at lately have a good bit of headroom for the enthusiast crowd. I was expecting the HD 4870X2 to offer that same level of overhead for overclocking. The HD 4870X2 gave up a little bit of love, but not as much as I had hoped for - 55MHz on the GPU cores and 50MHz on the GDDR5 memory. Both pretty low numbers when you consider that this video card is an enthusiast-level card. I suspect that heat is the main culprit in limiting the overclocking here. With temperatures in the range of 90+ degrees Celsius, heat is a major concern, and may ultimately be the problem to solve to get more overhead. At 955MHz on the memory, I ended up with large colored blotches on the screen. At 950MHz, the problem disappeared. On the GPU cores, once I got over 805MHz, I was greeted with lockups and reboots. Setting up a profile in the Catalyst Control Center and modifying the XML file for the profile did not help, as it has with the 4850 and 4870 video cards. The fan speed never changed, so I was left with a hot card and no way to cool it down any more than the drivers would allow; as with any piece of hardware, your mileage may vary. Knowing what my limits were on the clock speeds, I decided to see how much the CPU clock speed was impacting performance. So I pulled the Q9450 and put in my trusty QX9770 to get some real clock speed to find out what kind of performance difference the CPU makes. At 400x10, the performance did not let me down. In 3DMark06 at the default 1280x1024 resolution, the combo did not disappoint - 22520 was the score I achieved."

AMD has gone too long without a real high-end graphics card to compete with the competition, but they're done with the pity, and prove it with the HD 4870 X2, which becomes the fastest graphics card the planet has ever seen. It may cost more than the competition, but its end performance easily negates that premium.

Sapphire 4870 X2 Review @ DriverHeaven

Today we have the opportunity to test the card in its shipping form with a driver which is much closer to the version consumers will receive. We will be running the card through a selection of the latest and greatest games at resolutions up to 2560x1600 as well as testing Blu-Ray acceleration and CrossFireX performance. The big question that needs answered ..... are ATI back at the top of their game?

ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 - AMD Back On Top @ HotHardware.com

Posted by Nathan @ 4:38 PM (EDT)

The Radeon HD 4800 series didn't exactly overwhelm NVIDIA's GTX 200 series with raw performance. In fact, the GeForce GTX 280 and 9800 GX2 were more powerful than the Radeon HD 4870. The Radeon HD 4800 series cards, however, were still excellent cards and they were offered at extremely competitive prices, which put significant pressure on NVIDA. At the time of their launch, the Radeon HD 4850 and Radeon HD 4870 were both less expensive and more powerful than the GeForce 9800 GTX and GeForce GTX 260, respectively. Since then, NVIDIA has reacted with a quick round of price cuts.

There hopefully isn't a soul alive in the enthusiast community who isn't even partially surprised with how well ATI has been able to turn around their fortunes but there is one area they have not yet tackled: the ultra high-end performance crown. Riding on the coattails of their recent inroads, today marks the launch of their HD4870 X2 2GB card which is looking to capitalize on the growing popularity of the 4800-series while taking performance to the next level.

MSI P45 Platinum Motherboard @ Viper Lair

Posted by Nathan @ 4:37 PM (EDT)

"There are a few points that the Specifications don't cover. The first is MSI's new DrMOS and GreenPower, aimed at increasing power efficiency and lowering power usage. The P45 Platinum has some ye olde overclocking jumpers which allow you to increase the base FSB via hardware; personally I think this will be a little used feature by most. Enough time has passed that this would seem like a new feature to many, but the old(er) folks will remember these from days gone by when New Kids On The Block were cool. Like NKOTB, they should have probably remained in the past. That said, MSI's RapidBoost feature used in conjunction with the jumpers might better justify their inclusion."

Lenovo ThinkPad X200 Review @ Digital Trends

Posted by Nathan @ 4:37 PM (EDT)

"While Lenovo's ultra-sleek X300 may have stolen the show as the company's MacBook Air competitor back in April, the machine's astronomic price tag also left most would-be buyers pressing against the window glass like gawkers at a Maserati dealership. To fill the gap between the flagship X300 and the smaller, but far more affordable 12.1-inch X61, Lenovo released the X61's successor in July, the X200. The reworked machine has grown in width to make room for a new widescreen XGA screen, picked up Intel's latest generation Montevina mobile chip for better speed and efficiency, and stirred in some extra features and refinements as well."

Well today I will be reviewing a 700W power supply from a company you all should know by now. It’s from a company that I’ve said is among the best in the industry and kick started the 80PLUS program mainstream. I remember I reviewed the old SS-300 and SS-400 power supplies from Seasonic a few years back and while it didn’t impress me, I’ve got to say Seasonic has improved leaps and bounds.

MSI R4850 Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 7:11 PM (EDT)

"The MSI R4850...what is there to say about this video card - except that it rocked! The MSI R4850 was not only able to overclock higher than the Sapphire HD4850 that I recently tested, but the MSI card was also able to stay cooler under a full load than the Sapphire by about 20°C! I was very surprised when I saw that this card was competitively priced with the other HD4850 cards that have the stock cooling solution, which adds an extra value to the card. The performance of the R4850 surpassed the Sapphire HD4850 - not by much - however, in the benchmark world, every point makes a difference and adds even more value to the card."

Gigabyte X48T-DQ6 Motherboard Review @ Motherboards.org

Posted by Nathan @ 7:58 PM (EDT)

Gigabyte tends to release many motherboards on the same chipset and the X48 is no exception with no less than four X48 motherboards currently on their website. The X48T-DQ6 supports all of the latest Intel Core 2 Quad/Extreme/Duo CPUs and also supports the older Prescott CPUs which some motherboards don't due to the VRM 11.1 specification. The qualified memory support on the board is rather light as to their Qualified Vendor List on their website, with the lack of Samsung DDR3 memory above 1066MHz and no Crucial memory support on the QVL list at all though both companies' memory worked great when I tried them. Not exactly an Editor's Choice due to its lack of DDR3 support, but it is a Hot Product as it still has plenty of available options that make it worth taking a look at.

Posted by Nathan @ 7:57 PM (EDT)

"Today for review I've got the AX Micro Bluetooth Headset from Tritton, and it's a very interesting headset, unlike any I've ever seen. The majority of BT Headsets out there today have a rubber loop that goes over your ear, I personally do not care for these types as I've found they can be uncomfortable for long periods of use, but the Tritton AX Micro uses no such system to secure the headset to your ear, it actually goes in your ear and has rubber 'fingers' that push against the inside of your outer ear to hold the AX Micro in place. At first I was skeptical of this system but in my time with the AX Micro I've found it works very well and it is very comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The battery life is very good as is the overall sound quality... "

Norcotek RPC-450 Rackmount Enclosure Review @ Virtual-Hideout

Posted by Nathan @ 7:56 PM (EDT)

“These two things, though quite bad on their own, don't obscure the wall of pros that come hurling along with this chassis. Firstly, is the complete modularity, and secondly is the included hardware - being able to fit 11 hard drives which are cooled off the bat is incredible, especially when they're actively cooled. Couple this with the fact that this is one of so very few cases at this price point which are capable of holding an extended ATX system, and the fact that when the door works, the inbound airflow is filtered, the result becomes a very good deal, despite the flaws.”
