ASUS RT-N13U Wireless Router and Print Server Review @ ThinkComputers.org

Posted by Nathan @ 3:20 PM (EST)

“As the price of home networking equipment falls, manufacturers are looking to include features which separate their product from the rest of the pack. Many routers include at least one USB port these days because of this. This USB port is generally used for either a printer or some kind of storage device, such as an external hard drive or flash drive. The ASUS RT-N13U is one such device. It unifies 802.11n wireless with a 10/100 switch and a lone USB port, which ASUS thinks your all-in-one printer would love. ThinkComputers reviews the ASUS RT-N13U wireless router"

DirectCompute Benchmark 0.25 @ NGOHQ.com

Posted by Nathan @ 3:19 PM (EST)

"Pat has released a new version of DirectCompute Benchmark. This tool allows you to benchmark DirectX 11 latest general-purpose computing feature by calculating tons of FFT-like data and some memory transfers. DirectCompute is an application programming interface (API) that takes advantage of the massively parallel processing power of a modern graphics processing unit (GPU) to accelerate PC application performance. Be advised that DirectX 11 and the latest display drivers are required to run this benchmark."

ATI Radeon HD 5850 Crossfire Review @ Motherboards.org

Posted by Nathan @ 3:18 PM (EST)

Two ATI HD 5850s are definitely better than a single card in almost every game. To take advantage of two cards of this magnitude you almost have to turn up FSAA to 8x and AF to 16x as performance with 4x FSAA is nearly CPU limited on a Core i7 920. Turning up the image quality is a benefit everyone can appreciate as the games are not stressed by two cards at 4X at all. Performance in games increases 30-40% over a single card in every case except Batman Arkham Asylum which has issues running in Crossfire mode. The cost of two HD 5850s if you can find them is $540 on Newegg, meaning it is more expensive than a single HD 5870 but has higher performance and more image quality enhancing features like up to 16x FSAA native.

Seagate XT 2TB SATA 6GB/s Hard Drive Testing @ Legit Reviews

Posted by Nathan @ 3:18 PM (EST)

"We had high hopes for SATA 6GB/s before we starting benchmarking one of these new platforms, but other than having some nice burst benchmark screen shots we don't have really anything else to show you. Seagate was kind enough to send over the Seagate XT 2TB hard drive for benchmarking and while the drive is great the performance benefits of SATA 6GB/s don't seem like it will create a mad dash for new motherboards or drives anytime soon. The Seagate marketing slide that talked about SATA 6GB/s maturing over the next 2-3 years really starts to make sense now that we have seen the performance numbers."

PowerMat Wireless Charging Unit @ TestFreaks

Nesteq ASM XZero 500W PSU Review @ Driverheaven

Posted by Nathan @ 3:17 PM (EST)

Today we are going to have a look at a product from Nesteq a German computer products designer, the ASM Xzero 500W power supply. What makes the Xzero unique is that although it has a cooling fan it only uses it when the internal temperature rises above a certain temperature, making it what we would call a semi-passive running unit. It also ships with a variety of distinct features which we will analyse thoroughly in our review today.

Eagle Arion ET-AR504LR-BK 2.1 Soundstage Speakers Review @ BmR

It doesn't require a music-prodigy to appreciate good music on a nice set of speakers. But how can the average Joe distinguish a nice set of speakers from manufactured junk? Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9D3K2/4G Memory Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 4:39 PM (EST)

The Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9D3K2/4G kit of memory impressed me with its performance and quality, but one issue I did run into was stability. I had to set the voltage to the maximum required setting of 1.9v at all times to run them at the listed stock timings of 9-9-9-27. I manually set the voltage at 1.7v when I first installed the memory and raised the voltage slowly until stability was achieved. However, before the 1.9v mark, my computer would crash during any program that stressed the system, such as gaming or benchmarking. I assume that some kits can run stable below 1.9v, but the set I received could not. With the voltage aside, the HyperX kit ended up on par with or ahead of both the Corsair and OCZ kits in most of the benchmarks and was also able to average a few more frames per second in Left 4 Dead across most resolutions.

nMedia Wood HTPC 8000 Case @ OCModShop

Posted by Nathan @ 4:39 PM (EST)

Wood is much easier to work with than steel. With a few simple tools, you can create a very solid PC case, and if you use high quality wood then it can look very sophisticated when stained. But many people arent interested in modding today, and you can buy just about everything pre-modded with the exception of the wood case.
nMedia has identified this niche and delivered a Home Theater PC made almost entirely out of wood, and has a classic look similar to many retro radio or audio consoles you see on QVC. Not only does this case have a classic look, but it is large enough to handle most PC hardware, and has all the connections and ports you need for a good home theater appliance.

Synology DS209 Advance NAS Enclosures @ Pro-Clockers

Posted by Nathan @ 5:16 PM (EST)

The power supply is the foundation of any computer. Without it, all that expensive, high-performance gear just sits idle. You can go without a case. Some people do. However, none of those bells and whistles are going to make a peep, if you don't have a power supply. Not only that, but you should never skimp on your power supply. I've seen more than a few computers taken out by a failing PSU. I've even seen one catch fire at a Lan Party I was attending. The site of a grown man crying isn't pretty. It is especially ugly when all of his friends are playing video games and making fun of him. This is the age of digital media and mass storage. Digital downloading is present in many homes via sites like iTunes and Rhapsody. Many people have digital cameras and high definition video cameras. We need massive storage capacities in order to save the large formats raw or in jpeg. Let's not forget about the large amounts of space these video camera video files can take up. You're going to need a place to keep all that data. That device is the Synology DS209 which we will be reviewing next.

ASRock M3A785GXH/128M Motherboard Review @ Legit Reviews

Posted by Nathan @ 5:15 PM (EST)

The ASRock M3A785GXH128M uses a 4+1 Phase power design. While this might be a red flag for some, we were able to overclock a 140W Phenom II X4 965 to a vCore of 1.55v with just a simple 80mm fan blowing across the MOSFETs. With a BIOS made for overclocking and AMD's awesome OverDrive at our disposal we were able to squeeze an extra 500mhz out of our Phenom II X4 965 Black edition Processor. Even with bare MOSFETS we had no trouble cranking up the voltage to 1.52v. and were able to reach 3.9GHz!

Sparkle GeForce GTX 260 Plus 1792MB Video Card Review @ ThinkComputers.org

“Today I will be looking at a GTX 260 by Sparkle, the GTX 260 Plus. This isn’t your typical GTX 260, as it sports 1792 megs of memory. I reviewed a couple of Radeon HD 4870 X2s that each had two gigs of memory, but they were actually two 4870s with 1GB of memory per GPU. This is a single GPU with not much less than two gigs for itself. Will this massive amount of graphics memory make a difference? Read on to see!"

Dynatron Genius Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 5:14 PM (EST)

"The Dynatron Genius CPU Cooler performed quite well when it was stacked up against the stock cooling solution that Intel provides for their retail processors. The Dynatron Genius cooler is very light weight and stands quite tall, however it is not too tall for a mid tower chassis, which will come in handy if you are unsure of what case you are going to be putting your build in."

Asus EAH 4890 Review @ XSReviews

Posted by Nathan @ 3:13 PM (EST)

With the recent arrival of the new ATI Radeon HD 5 series graphics cards causing a great deal of interest, the previous best performing single GPU from ATI – the 4890 – has been left by the way side a little. Although, on the whole, the ATI DX11 GPU launches have been a great success for ATI, many users will still be sticking to the 4 series, if not older, cards and as ATI seeks to monopolise the DirectX11 Market with nVidia’s Fermi Technology lagging far behind, it’s definitely a good time to be investing in a 4890 or other 4 series GPU.

NZXT Gamma Budget Case Review @ OCModShop

Posted by Nathan @ 3:11 PM (EST)

And now, everyone and their mother are wearing black. Its a fashion trend now. I still wear it all the time, and rarely wear anything else, but not because half the people on television claim to be dark and mysterious. I simply still don't give a crap and have a horrible attitude most of the time. But I have a feeling that NZXT targets me sometimes when it comes to their gaming cases. They go flat black (what we called "murdered out") and they make them look absolutely awesome. Take the case I'm reviewing today for example, the Gamma steel mid tower. It's sleek, roomy, and has space for six 120mm fans. I tell you, it's awesome, it's black, and it doesn't care what you think.

Sapphire Radeon HD 5750 Vapor-X Review @ Motherboards.org

Posted by Nathan @ 3:10 PM (EST)

Temperatures with Vapor-X reached 56C under load when overclocked and 42C when idle, very good temperatures for a video card. The cost of the card will be a little more expensive than a 5750 reference card but for that cost you get excellent cooling, excellent overclocking and slightly higher performance due to the increased clocks. You also get a copy of Colin Mcrae’s Dirt 2 game that is one of the first DX11 games to hit in December. For those wanting extreme cooling and a different than standard reference designed card this is one solid Hot Product.

Thermolab BADA Heatsink Review @ Frostytech.com

Posted by Nathan @ 3:09 PM (EST)

"From the makers of the wavy BARAM heatsink comes the Thermolab BADA; a 136mm tall mid-tower heatsink that fills in the performance cooling void where taller coolers can't go. Height you see, can quickly throw a wrench into PC plans when the cooler doesn't fit in the case. Thermolab's BADA heatsink is equipped with one 95mm PWM fan mounted to the heatsinks' raw aluminum fins via sturdy rubber vibration absorbing posts. Interestingly for a commercial heatsink, Thermolab are pre-lapping the base of the BADA to ensure the three 6mm diameter exposed copper heatpipes are flat, smooth, and ideal for mounting onto the processor."

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor New Revision Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 3:09 PM (EST)

"With the refreshed version, I was able to bring it up over 4GHz and maintain this overclock not only for benchmarking, but for everyday use as well and remain under the thermal limits of the processor. Throughout the testing of the refreshed Phenom II X4 965, the stock temperatures remained below 38C degrees and the overclocked temperatures peaked at 51C at 1.5V, which is great considering the first generation at the same voltage, and a lower overclock ceiling, topped the 62C threshold after long periods of being overclocked. That is over a 10C drop from the better thermal properties of the refreshed Phenom II X4 965.

The model number is now HDZ965FBK4DGM, and the total TDP is down from 140W to 125W. The X4 965 CPU still honors the AM3 socket, and uses a 45nm process to construct the 258mm2 die. GlobalFoundries FAB1 has added C1E implementation on the hardware level, and DDR3 is now supported at 1333MHz for 'Heavy' loads. NZXT M59 Classic Series PC Case @ Bona Fide Reviews

Posted by Nathan @ 4:40 PM (EST)

" Today for review I’ve got another product from our friends at NZXT, this time it’s the M59 Mid-Tower Gaming Chassis. The M59 is a sleek looking case, I honestly really like the look and style of it, so much so that it has become the home for my gaming PC hooked up to my 47” HDTV. It’s small in size so it won’t stick out, but yet there’s plenty of room for hard drives and large sized video cards inside. NZXT has included a 2.5” to 3.5” hard drive adapter for those, like myself, that use SSDs for their computers. The M59 is nicely designed and fairly well made, but it’s not without it’s faults, it’s a budget case yes, so some faults are to be expected, but for a budget case it’s worth it despite the problems.. So read on to learn more…"

In Win Commander 850 Watt Power Supply @ Pro-Clockers

Posted by Nathan @ 4:39 PM (EST)

The power supply is the foundation of any computer. Without it, all that expensive, high-performance gear just sits idle. You can go without a case. Some people do. However, none of those bells and whistles are going to make a peep, if you don't have a power supply. Not only that, but you should never skimp on your power supply. I've seen more than a few computers taken out by a failing PSU. I've even seen one catch fire at a Lan Party I was attending. The site of a grown man crying isn't pretty. It is especially ugly when all of his friends are playing video games and making fun of him. Don't let it happen to you. Get a good power supply. Coincidentally, I'm reviewing the In Win 850 watt Commander PSU today. We're going to find out if it has what it takes to keep your computer working safely at peak efficiency.

Western Digital WD TV Live HD Media Player @ Legit Reviews

Posted by Nathan @ 6:32 PM (EST)

Almost everything I have in my video library played with the WD TV Live HD. Ripped and downloaded music and playlists (with album art), pictures from my digital camera stored on USB adaptors and my home network, High Def and Low Def movie rips. The media server even allowed you to toggle between audio tracks that were present in your media file. This thing is amazing! Not every 1080p file played as smooth as the trailers we talked about above, but those were rare occurrences. For instance, when I pointed the WD TV Live to a Blu-ray rip of...

Ultra X4 1050 watt PSU @ Bjorn3D

Posted by Nathan @ 6:31 PM (EST)

Ultra has quickly made a name for themselves in the PSU market with the introduction of their X3 series. It has been quite awhile since the introduction of the X3 series, so now Ultra is ready to launch their new X4 series of PSU's. One of the big issues with the X3 series was its efficiency. Under a full load the PSU would fall to 78% efficiency. While this isn't really bad, its not enough to be certified for 80+. This time around Ultra has went all the way, and obtained the 80+ certification.

Gigabyte GA-P55 UD3R Review @ OCC

Posted by Nathan @ 6:30 PM (EST)

"First off, I have to say that the GA-P55-UD3R shocked me when I was able to push the i7 870 to almost 4.4GHz. It fell just a tick below, because at a 210MHz bclock it did not want to give me any stability, even at reduced speeds. With that said, a bclock of 209MHz with a 21x clock multiplier proved fruitful and allowed the UD3R to shine. While I had problems going over 1600MHz with a set of dual sided DIMMs on the P55-UD6, I did not have that problem on the P55-UD3R. In fact, the modules scaled above what they have done in the past by a good 40MHz, to 1020MHz. To say I was stoked is an understatement! At this level of performance on air, you can be sure there is more left on the table that can be obtained when you can go for it with improved cooling."

Today I have the chance to test out Seagate's Cheetah hard drives, 10k and 15k RPM 3.5inch drives. With four times the storage space in a bigger package how will it affect our original thoughts.

The Apple Magic Mouse on Windows 7 and OSX @ DriverHeaven

Posted by Nathan @ 4:15 PM (EST)

Most of you guys know I am a big follower of the products that Apple produce and within my ever growing collection of systems I own many Apple products. Sure they are expensive, but they have served me well and I find OSx is an extremely reliable operating system for doing most of my design work. That said, I jump between computers often during my day and feel equally at home on any Windows OS. Yes, I know it is unheard of in this industry- a 'PC centric reviewer and writer' who sings the praises of Apple when he feels they deserve it. Today we are going to have a look at the new Apple Magic Mouse.
